To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

Do you have anything stronger than paracetamol? 🥰

I've taken some ibuprofen, we do have paracetamol and codeine somewhere in the cupboard but I'm not sure that actually helps the pain as much as just makes you loopy!

Think I'll get a GP's appointment in about six weeks! Definitely off to a&e because now I've sat down the pain is unbelievable. Hoping the morning will be quieter than it is now

If you can, go now, you will get no sleep. It sounds bad. You could post on here with your head hanging by a tendon to your neck and still get the "i wouldn't go! It's emergencies only" responses.

No, I wouldn’t. If you can walk on it, it’s very likely not broken. Give it til tomorrow or the next day, rest, ice and see how you feel. Then go to a minor injuries unit, if necessary, one with an x-ray, not A&E.

I walked on my broken ankle for two weeks.

Yes! And possibly constipated 😳

Ditto - walked for two weeks with a fractured heel because I was pregnant was paranoid about getting an x ray 😂 gave in and it was the big blue boot for me

Happydays321 · 14/10/2024 19:44

I'd go tonight. To me it sounds like a fracture, you'll be far more comfortable in a boot or plaster. I was in it and out in 3 hours.
Can you get a cab to the hospital, or ask a neighbour to drop you off and get a cab back.

Isobel201 · 14/10/2024 19:44

Differentstarts · 14/10/2024 19:35

You won't need an actual appointment just call and explain

they'll just tell the OP to go to A&E. I had a small break in my ankle from going down three steps, the pain and swelling was unbelievable. Was x-rayed on the same day, and told it was just sprained. I only discovered it was fractured previously a month later. GP said he could see a healed part of the bone.

Singleandproud · 14/10/2024 19:45

Take a bag and be ready for the long haul, you can't drive yourself though particularly if you end up with a boot.

You've had an accident there's no way to know if it's broken or needs additional treatment unless you have an X-Ray so unless you have a MIU nearby then it's an A&E job it's what its there for. Its not as if you've passed out drunk or are in other ways a nuisance you've actually had an accident and are injured

SophiaCohle · 14/10/2024 19:45

If going tonight would mean driving yourself, then save it til the morning. If something happens you may not be insured if you knowingly drive on an ankle that bad. Do RICE tonight, take paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately so you can have something every two hours, and get it x-rayed in the morning.

I did something very similar recently and the swelling and bruising was epic but it turned out to be 'just' a sprain in the end. And yy to physio as it heals.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 19:46

Broken bones can still do the job. I broke my wrist and elbow and still could do everything as normal for two weeks. You should go tonight.

Edited

I think it depends on area ours refer straight to xray and it's walk in so you go whenever and are in and out within 10 minutes I went last week

user1497787065 · 14/10/2024 19:49

Can I say that not everywhere has a Minor Injuries unit and if a fracture was suspected a GO would send you to A and E.
I fell and walked round and drove with a broken ankle for a couple of days. A and E is quite often the only place to access an X-ray.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:50

We definitely don't have GP to xray or anything, it's just a&e. I don't think I can get a cab tonight and I'm definitely not dying so I'm laid up on the sofa with a cup of tea and will be heading over in the morning

It wasn't minor injuries unit it was the xray department in the main hospital

jennylamb1 · 14/10/2024 19:52

The time I broke my arm I felt sick and clammy, I think that may be a sign that you've broken something.

The gp doesn't xray they refer you to the radiology department at the hospital you go get an xray if it's fine you go home if it's not a dr speaks to you and you then get sent to fracture clinic for them to put a pot on

StormingNorman · 14/10/2024 19:53

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:14

I'd have to drive myself over, it's dark and I'm in so much pain I don’t know if I can drive

If you drive on an injury like this your insurance will be invalid. RICE tonight and wait for your mum to take you to A&E or Minor Injuries in the morning.

Have you got a photo op

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 14/10/2024 19:56

Your GP can refer direct to Xray so you don't need to wait in A&E if it's not too bad. If its really bad just go to A&E. You had an accident. No one has xray vision so you'll need to be seen by their x ray department one way or another

POTC · 14/10/2024 19:56

If you still feel sick then you need to go now. It will be no safer to drive in the morning either so just ring a friend to take you or a taxi now.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 19:59

How many more times do we need to say go tonight?

I think this is concerning (although I'm no medic)

Could you ring 111 and see what they suggest?

espressomartinii · 14/10/2024 20:00

Ex-radiographer here! Yes go to A&E. Don't bother ringing the GP for a referral. This is what A&E is for.

Not sure why someone thinks it's Saturday! Bizarre!

Dragonsandcats · 14/10/2024 20:03

I also think you should go to A&E now.
