To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

As for being on every three seconds, clearly not. I was just trying to make a point. You need seeing@itwasnevermine . Good luck.

Goingncforthisone · 14/10/2024 22:01

If the minor injuries is only 15 mins further than your A and E, go there (in the morning if it is closed now). You'll get more than that time back in the waiting time difference.

Frozensnow · 14/10/2024 22:02

I would go now if I were you but I understand your reluctance. I hope you get it seen swiftly in the morning.

Mum2jenny · 14/10/2024 22:06

I wouldn’t drive yourself as they decide it needs plastering and then you can’t drive home. Pls get a friend to take you, even if they have to drop you off and you need to get a taxi home.

Will this apply in an automatic? It's my left ankle and I drive auto 😭 I have plans in a couple of weeks 🥲

I rolled my ankle yesterday, it swelled up and I wasn't able to walk without pain the rest of the day. This morning the swelling has gone down completely, walking up and down stairs is still mildly painful but other than that it's fine.
I put a bag of frozen mushrooms on it and dosed myself up with pain killers when I got home from work yesterday.

Unless you can't put weight on it at all or it's extremely swollen or has visible damage which may suggest something is broken/fractured, I'd give it a day or two and see if it improves.

Why?

Stop being a fucking martyr and just go to minor injuries or A&E for an x-ray. It's the only way to tel

cossette · 14/10/2024 22:18

I tripped and fell August 2020 and knew immediately that I'd hurt my ankle. It was right in the middle of Covid so avoided A&E and rested etc. 3 months later it was really painful so eventually rang 111 who sent me off to A&E. X ray showed a break that hadn't healed properly. Ended up in a boot for 6 weeks. 12 months later physio hadn't worked and ended up with a major ankle operation, total non- weight bearing for 2 weeks then 8 weeks in a boot and a lot of physio - so I'd say if you can get it checked you should!

If it’s automatic and it’s your left foot you’ll be fine.
Do you have a picture of the egg/bruising?

Deffo sounds like and a&e job in the morning.

Isitmeyourecookingfor · 14/10/2024 22:34

Radiographer here- Please go to A&E and get it checked, it's what A&E is for. Even if it isn't fractured (and it sounds very possible), ligament tears can be serious- you need to be assessed by a medic.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 14/10/2024 22:35

I'm really concerned you've left it with your description of symptoms, you're leaving yourself at risk of numerous complications. You had an accident, and no access to a minor injury unit, you absolutely belong in A&E and no member of medical staff will suggest otherwise.

IsitaHatOrACat · 15/10/2024 03:56

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 21:56

@GretchenWienersHair exactly that. My dad has spent time in a&e lately and I always feel guilty for using NHS time, even with a GP or a pharmacy!!! I feel like the messaging around the NHS these days is to not use them

The messaging around the NHS is to use services appropriately. E.g. use self care when appropriate and don't go to A and E when a pharmacy would be more suitable. Obviously neither are relevant in your circumstances!

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/10/2024 04:34

It's not that this injury isn't 'A&E worthy' - it probably is.

Its that going at night, when its likely to result in a long wait on a hard chair with no way of elevating the leg, is going to add extra pain and discomfort.

Vs an almost certainly quicker visit in the morning, and potentially the option of a Minor Injuries unit instead..

Where its unlikely that the wait, on her own sofa, leg elevated, is really not going to alter the outcome.

IF things were to change, ie loss of sensation or circulation in the foot, then yes that would indicate assessment/treatment is more urgent, but right now the most urgent and relevant treatment IS to 'RICE' it.

DryBiscuit · 15/10/2024 05:04

People on mumsnet make me laugh

If A&E isnt for a possible broken ankle, than what is it for???

Was in so much pain when she done it, she couldnt talk or think straight

The pain is making her feel sick and her toes feel funny

Christ, some people should not be giving ‘advice’

OP - Hope everything goes ok today at A&E where you NEED to be seen

Bestyearever2024 · 15/10/2024 05:52

I hope you've managed OK through the night, OP.

Let us know how you get on this morning 🥰

Sending love ❤️

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 15/10/2024 06:10

My OH did his ankle in at work. Thought he'd just sprained it and continued walking around on it for 3 days until someone finally made him go to A&E. Turned out he'd shattered his ankle completely and required surgery that night to have pinned back together. Now I on the other hand honestly thought I was going to die when I hairline fractured my finger

flea101 · 15/10/2024 06:20

How is it this morning op? I broke and dislocated my ankle it was agony I can sympathise. Keep us posted on how you get on.

itwasnevermine · 15/10/2024 06:29

I slept through but I think that's because I was tired from work!🤣

I woke up and thought it felt okay but I've just moved it rind and the pain is back, so it's definitely off to get it checked this morning

OP posts:
TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 15/10/2024 07:23

I’m glad you’re getting it checked this morning OP. I think some of the A&E gatekeepers on Mumsnet can have us second guessing ourselves.

Tiswa · 15/10/2024 07:26

Cynic17 · 14/10/2024 20:04

Absolutely not. Even if you have sprained or even broken it, the hospital can't do much. It just needs time to heal. Take a couple of generic painkillers and leave A&E for people who really need it.

You are joking I assume or being sarcastic as if it is badly sprained or broken a boot is needed

2 friends didn’t go and it caused them a whole lot of grief in the future

it is A&E for a reason accident and emergency - you have had an accident that needs checking. So get it checked

NCISveryspecialagent · 15/10/2024 07:37

Your symptoms sound similar to when I had torn ligaments in my ankle. I had a cast for weeks & lots of physio. It's still not 100% now even years later if I'm honest.
Please go get it checked, good luck!

itwasnevermine · 15/10/2024 07:37

I thought the plan was a&e this morning but my mum is still asleep! I use public transport to get to work and there's no way I can get myself there so I'm just having to wait for her to wake up now

Yes you should. I did similar, walked on it for almost two weeks then went for an x-ray when I couldn't sleep because it was so painful.

I had a fracture and it needed treatment.

This @itwasnevermine !
I recently fell down stairs, rolled by ankle as I did it. Thought it wasxa sprain, turned out to be a fracture. Surprisingly common type in 'rolled' ankles. Please go to a walk-in centre or minor injuries unit

itwasnevermine · 15/10/2024 08:00

I can't quite believe I'm posting pictures of my feet to the internet (for free!) but I'm hoping these show the egg I'm dealing with - bruising seems to have subsided a little bit but my god it's sore! My ankles are fat anyway but I can definitely see the big lump on the left one

Get yourself to some sort of treatment place!
Looks like a Weber's fracture - very common
