To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

@Justlurking10 bollocks 🤣 bit late now I suppose 😭

It's killing to even rest the ice on it so I think I'm going to regret staying at home

I recently broke my ankle and the pain in bed was sooo bad!!
Although if it isn't a stable fracture you shouldn't be weight bearing at all!

Can you get a taxi to the hospital?

HereForTheFreeLunch · 14/10/2024 20:41

The pain plus the bruising is a sign of a fracture I think! (Based on my limited experience of broken toes and things in the family)

You should have gone to A&E I think. It's not too late even now.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 20:42

Then go..

itsgettingweird · 14/10/2024 20:48

My friend fell off a pavement (we'd had a few!) and walked (well limped) home in her boots.

Took them off and went to sleep.

Next day it was black and a balloon - and we'll and truly broken.

You would not be being a baby to get it checked at MIU or a and e if you don't have one.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/10/2024 21:14

OP, get a taxi to the bloody hospital and get it checked out. You may very well have broken it

I really dont understand the mentality of people on here who seem to think that unless there is a bone sticking out, you shouldn't be in A&E

Nosleepforthismum · 14/10/2024 21:15

I seem to remember when I broke my hip that if you can take less than 3 steps it’s a hospital/ambulance job. I had no bruising and felt fine in myself but fainted the minute I put any weight on it. Please don’t worry about going if you need to! Although I’d really consider whether you can drive or not…

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 14/10/2024 21:16

When my eldest was 14, he sped up to catch up with us. Just broke into a fast walk and went over on his ankle. He didn't even fall. Turned out he had a fracture and ended up with one of those boots for weeks. I took him straight to A&E as he was in agony. If I had come on here I probably would have been told not to bother with A&E, especially by those posters who seem to magically know it's only a sprain using the amazing psychic powers of their phone screens.

Everyone agrees she needs an xray but if she's not wanting to go tonight and happy to wait until tomorrow their are other options available which are quicker and more convenient for her

Assuming no minor injuries unit I’d do what you’re doing- have a cup of tea, painkillers and hopefully a rest and go to a&e first thing

but if it gets worse overnight taxi there

Munchyseeds2 · 14/10/2024 21:28

My nan walked for years on a broken ankle....I would go and get it checked out.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 21:28

Quite glad I stayed home as even if I'm in pain at least I'm warm and on the sofa

For everyone asking why I wouldn't just go, look at some of the comments on here, it makes me feel SO anxious to go to A&E. Even though I've not been in 6 years

If you are hurt it's really not time wasting.
It's Accident and Emergency - what you had was an accident.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 21:32

What comments? Everyone more or less is saying go. Take responsibility. It's no one else fault if you chose not to go. As for people saying don't go unless you're dying, why let strangers impact on your health?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 14/10/2024 21:36

I went to A&E years ago after falling off my bike. I lost consciousness and had no idea where I was when I came round!

It’s for accidents! If you are struggling and genuinely think you have injured something seriously, do go and get checked out.

I didn’t go when I fell very heavily last year and hurt my elbow. I mean I hurt everything! I fell like a sack of spuds being chucked by a very strong man🫣 My elbow is the lasting injury! It still isn’t right and causes me pain now so I think I was a bit daft not to go!

GoldenLegend · 14/10/2024 21:36

Dramatic · 14/10/2024 18:18

Unless you think it's broken I would wait til the morning and go to a minor injuries/urgent care as it may be badly sprained and you might need some treatment

I walked around on a broken ankle for three weeks. You can’t always tell.

herniated · 14/10/2024 21:39

Cynic17 · 14/10/2024 20:04

Absolutely not. Even if you have sprained or even broken it, the hospital can't do much. It just needs time to heal. Take a couple of generic painkillers and leave A&E for people who really need it.

Op was slurring her words from the pain, has significant swelling and bruising with tracking up her leg and funny feelings in toes, also a big egg on her ankle but she doesn't need to go to a&e? 🤣

Please ignore those who tell you not to go in. You know your body more than some randoms on the internet. A&E misuse is not applicable to actual accidents. You’ve had an actual accident and are in agony. Get it seen.

herniated · 14/10/2024 21:44

Op don't let some busy bodies on here put you off going to hospital. I'm sure if you was reading this thread you would think it madness not to go and get checked out, just call an Uber

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 21:51

Someone count up. I'm sure more people are saying go than don't but she won't listen.

You're on this thread every three seconds.

I'm going in the morning. I don't have Uber in my area. There simply aren't any within 50 miles because it's a small town. It's a Monday, taxis stop when it gets dark at this time of year. I have no way of getting there that won't cost me a fortune or leads to me being a danger (driving myself)

Negative voices are always louder than positive ones. If she was feeling anxious about it in the first place and already has a fear of being a “time waster” (which I assume she did, hence posting here in the first place), then it only takes a few comments like, “Take a couple of generic painkillers and leave A&E for people who really need it.” to prove her fear and put her off going.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 21:56

@GretchenWienersHair exactly that. My dad has spent time in a&e lately and I always feel guilty for using NHS time, even with a GP or a pharmacy!!! I feel like the messaging around the NHS these days is to not use them

@itwasnevermine If anyone's here too often, it's because they're worried about you.

@BirthdayRainbow we've done our best, can't do more.
