To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 18:14

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

Absolutely not. Even if you have sprained or even broken it, the hospital can't do much. It just needs time to heal. Take a couple of generic painkillers and leave A&E for people who really need it.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 14/10/2024 20:05

Absolutely A&E now, your toes feeling funny is a red flag. You might need it reset urgently to maintain adequate blood flow.

EmeraldRoulette · 14/10/2024 20:06

@itwasnevermine go now

the sick feeling and passing out suggests a break and yes, if you have a high pain threshold you can weight bear in many cases. Ask me how I know!

You can release toxins from a fracture that make you very ill. GO NOW. Literally what A&E is for.

Musiclover234 · 14/10/2024 20:06

Honestly people are crazy at gate keeping A&E. Many are streamed now so you go through to Minors, majors, trauma, GP/urgent care etc. If there is no minor injuries unit nearby you use A&E

This injury is absolutley a reason to get checked out. People can and do walk on fractures they’ve misjudged.

QuestionableMouse · 14/10/2024 20:07

Again, saying this as someone who didn't go soon enough - go and get checked out.

You are very wrong and shouldn’t be giving medical advice!

How do you know it’s not fractured? Can you see it??

lmhj · 14/10/2024 20:09

For goodness sake. This clearly needs seen.

The issue with an and e is not people like OP.

Do you have any neighbours? Anyone you can ask to take you now. The sooner you go the sooner you are seen

No my only option really is taking myself 🥲 I can get from the lounge to the bathroom, god knows how I'll get myself upstairs but I'm hoping I don't need to move much in the night and then go first thing

@itwasnevermine in that case call nhs 24. They will assess over phone and if deemed necessary send an ambulance to get you or agree to wait to morning. Speak to those in the nhs.

EmeraldRoulette · 14/10/2024 20:12

@itwasnevermine your mum can’t take you now? Don’t say you don’t want to bother her. This is urgent.

A broken bone/severe sprain most certainly needs a medical opinion! And unless it is xrayed no one know if it's broken or not.

That would be a bit fat waste of time, such an injury will be lowest priority and keep getting bumped down the list any time anything higher priority comes in, resulting in the OP waiting up all night for something unlikely to happen, when she could be attempting some sleep!

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 20:15

God I'd take you. Just to get you there.

Humphhhh · 14/10/2024 20:15

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 18:18

Going to ice it when I get home, we've got no bandages in to compress though 🥲

It really doesn't feel like an a&e matter but I also felt like I was about to pass out when I did it, I couldn't walk or talk (definitely didn't bang my head though, I'm sure of that, it was just the pain!)

Don't worry about going to A&E. Accidents like yours are triaged to a nurse who will assess if you need an X-ray and then review the results. You won't be in the same queue as an emergency.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 14/10/2024 20:16

BananaGrapeMelon · 14/10/2024 18:16

I use RICE - rest ice compression elevation - for a sprained ankle.

I did this, thinking I had a sprain. Thinking don’t need A&E for a sprain, I’d just be wasting their time.
3 weeks later the pain was unbearable. Went to A&E, yes, it’d been broken all along. Not my ankle as such but the non weight bearing bone in the lower leg. Felt a right idiot. Staff were gobsmacked I’d been walking ( hobbling) for 3 weeks on it.
So I don’t think it’s OTT to get it Xrayed.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 20:16

I'm definitely not getting an ambulance!! I'd rather drive myself than waste their time

If you've got tingling in your toes then that's not great.

Whilst X-ray will likely be open now the cast department won't so you will just be sent home tonight with instructions to RICE.

Tuesday is meant to be the best day to go to A&E as it's the least busy. You won't be wasting anyone's time as you'll be triaged and seen at an appropriate time so as long as you are prepared for the long haul and know you'll be sat there for a good few hours it's fine. Pack a book, charge devices tonight / headphones, water and snacks then you'll be as comfortable as possible.

Our A&E now triaged at the door for major A&E and minor ones that need to be seen but can wait IE not breathing or bleeding issues.

Your GP, if you ever got through to one would send you there anyway.

Ladylalaboo1 · 14/10/2024 20:18

If OPs hospital is like ours it's like the first stop , they assess in triage and anything like a suspected break/fracture etc they streamline the process and you get sent to the minor injuries department WITHIN the hospital. I've been numerous times, recently with my daughter for a broken finger and was in and out within an hour. You definitely do need to go to a&e for a suspected break/fracture because it could be fractured or broke not be clean, could be an issue where you would need surgery or resetting of the bone so yes do go as soon as you are able. Hope it's not too bad OP I've fallen a few years ago and the shock alone as an adult falling is awful, then the pain and bruises all over😭 xx

lmhj · 14/10/2024 20:19

@WiddlinDiddlin but that's for the NHS to decide. She's feeling sick, on her own, cant put weight on.

She can have her phone next to her. Every area is different.

I was sent to an and e with a child who had fallen in school. Child was fine but process had been started, we were not allowed to leave. School had started call.

Lots of people there.
I need a re prescription
I've been sick
I work day hours and can't get time off for GP
Positive pregnancy test at four weeks and wanted a reassurance scan

Lots of things block the system but a person alone in pain does not in my view deserve to be ignored.

Not sure what's worse, the pain of my ankle or the shame of falling over in the street and skinning my knee!!!

Hyacinthandrichard · 14/10/2024 20:20

@itwasnevermine definitely go if you can and early doors before the morning rush if you can. I could hardly talk when I dislocated my shoulder and was sick with pain so you may have broken it but without x ray eyes you won't know

Ladylalaboo1 · 14/10/2024 20:21

@itwasnevermine I know , I fell crossing the road at work once and I just stumbled and kept stumbling and just couldn't find my footing and ended up sprawled on the floor partly in a bush. Two men who worked at my office but I didn't know saw and rushed over to help me up which was kind but so embarrassing 🤣 I had a nasty cut knee and hands for days, felt so shaken !! X

Except you'd be a risk.

I also didn't go to hospital but had clue I had broken anything as the pain was very short lived. I still get pain now. Get to the hospital.

Justlurking10 · 14/10/2024 20:26

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:37

I've taken some ibuprofen, we do have paracetamol and codeine somewhere in the cupboard but I'm not sure that actually helps the pain as much as just makes you loopy!

It’s not recommended to take Ibuprofen within 48 hours of injury as swelling starts the healing process and it’s the body’s natural defence mechanism so by taking an anti inflammatory your actually prolonging it x

Waffle19 · 14/10/2024 20:27

@Justlurking10 I never knew that! Useful to know as I roll my ankles a lot
