I know I’m not the only one and don’t think I am being unreasonable tbh but didn’t know where else to post this.

In the past week or so there have been five serious attacks in the UK but what we have plastered all over the news is the police apologising to a deluded xl bully owner, when he’s the one who failed to do as he’s told.
What kind of message does that send?

The other day armed police were called to Stockport because of a dangerous dog and three people were injured. There’s only one little article about it in the Star. When did this ever used to happen in this country? It’s not normal.

I just don’t see why normal, decent people should have to live in fear of these scumbags and their dangerous dogs. Nothing is being done, how can something be banned if there are exemptions?
When the dogs do attack, the owners get months in prison which is the equivalent to a slap on the wrist.

It’s like being in possession of something worse than a loaded gun or a lion. Nobody’s allowed pepper spray though - you can get 4 years in prison just for carrying it apparently.
If they at least increased the jail time maybe that would deter people from owning these dangerous dogs.

It's numerous, weekly every week. Horrific.

Yanbu I totally agree they need to go.
You'll get a bunch of "it's bad owners, not bad dogs" but that's a load of bullshit in regards to these dogs. There is absolutely no need to have such powerful dogs and why would you take the risk anyway? There's a few in my town and I have been so glad I didn't have my kids with me when I've seen them

horseHorseHorse · 13/10/2024 17:42

Had one go after my pony a few weeks ago. He's usually rock solid with dogs but it was snapping at his legs. He gave it a bit of a kick and the owner started giving out at me! I usually love dogs but there... No.

Mayaamelia · 13/10/2024 17:46

Oh no that’s awful, you get so many owners blaming the victim

horseHorseHorse · 13/10/2024 17:47

He did- I'm normally pretty unshakable but it really frightened me!

YourLimeLurker · 13/10/2024 17:48

I can’t stand dogs of any kind, terrified of them, I cross the road rather than walk past one.
I’m far more scared of a Doberman or a Rottweiler than an XL bully (which if I’m honest I wouldn’t recognise)
I don’t want them to disappear though, I’d rather they were all on leads and not in shops but I recognise that it is my problem and that a lot of people feel the same way about my cat.

Edit to add: not that I take my cat shopping but you get the general point

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 13/10/2024 17:48

Imo it really is the owners/breeders.

A lot of people breed and sell these dogs with no thought about who they're going to, or the training required. And a lot of people buy them for their look and reputation. I feel terrible that the dogs are treated this way. It's completely wrong.

ButterAsADip · 13/10/2024 17:50

Yup! There is zero point in them. Repulsive.

Machiavellian · 13/10/2024 17:52

All pets are an ethical minefield. I don't think they should be allowed full stop.

Mayaamelia · 13/10/2024 17:54

Yeah I’ve always been wary of dogs, I was more scared of Staffies than Rottweilers though!

Was it not muzzled? I thought they had to be muzzled in public places. Some owners really are beyond stupid, if your dog harasses a horse of course its going to get a kick.

Bluevelvetsofa · 13/10/2024 18:16

I accept that, for some people, dogs are what makes their life. Whatever makes you happy. But I do want dog owners to be responsible and to be cognisant of others.

We live in a place with plenty of dog walking opportunities. I want them to be on leads, as per the requirements and I want their owners to pick up and dispose of their poo in the dog bins provided. I want them to be on leads on the promenade and to not be on the beach when it’s not permitted.

Ignoring the local rules signals that you’ll do as you choose, even if it inconveniences others and that’s before you consider large and dangerous dogs, of the types mentioned.

Pussycat22 · 13/10/2024 18:18

It's usually low intelligence, unambitious, low life numpties that need them to boost their image.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 13/10/2024 18:26

We have a dog problem in this country.

We take the piss out of the US with their ‘right to bear arms’ but were no better with our destructive dogs.

They kill children FFS.

They have killed children but on a population scale the issue is nowhere near comparable to US gun laws.

I agree and there have been reports in last few weeks that barely get a mention anymore

No, not muzzled!

ZippyLimeSnake · 13/10/2024 18:53

Please don’t come at me for what I am about to say.. But in a lot of cases it is the owner not the breed, I have an XL Bully and honestly he is the biggest dope and all he wants is for you or anyone to just love him. Yes they’re powerful and sadly for them they did eventually become a status dog and fall into the wrong hands. Unfortunately the media also only like to ever tell you when an XL bully has attacked where as other dog attacks the breed is nearly always never stated another thing I have come to notice is that not always if the breed correct when they state it’s been an XL bully, there have been occasions where it’s actually a mix breed. It is sad the dogs and us owners have gotten a bad rep as a lot of us and our dogs are really not bad. None of us wanted our dogs to become banned and put under the dangerous dog act as a lot of our dogs are not dangerous and to be entirely honest banning a breed doesn’t sort out the issue as another dog will eventually become a status dog. Cane Corso have been extremely popular since the XL ban. What does need to happen is some form of license for people to own any breed of dog as they all pose a risk an XL isn’t the only dog to ever of killed someone and they won’t be last.

I am not being biased as I totally agree these dogs are strong and yes can totally be dangerous with the wrong owners but getting completely rid of one breed will not stop another taking its place.

HRTQueen · 13/10/2024 18:53

They should all be put down

it won’t happen as government will not want to take such a harsh stance or one of harsh fines

so until they disappear (which also won’t happen) we shall hear of more attacks and fatalities from attacks

but as long as we don’t upset the good response owners 🙄

Mayaamelia · 13/10/2024 18:55

I agree and it’s just so frustrating knowing that nothing new will happen and attacks will continue

I totally agree. It's always a certain "type" of owner of these awful dogs.

SleepwalkingInTesco · 13/10/2024 18:58

YANBU
Very antisocial people swearing at/intimidating others and walking their XL bullies without a muzzle near me. Very frightening esp with children.

I don't think it is.

About 6 years ago my sister got one as a puppy, it was a lovely pup and she is a really good dog owner.

One day it just went for her son, they weren't even on the same couch. She has no idea what happened.

Luckily it was only 12 months old so she managed to get him off very quickly but she said he just switched and his eyes went like saucers.

He was PTS

redtrain123 · 13/10/2024 19:03

Yes, one scared a local dog and owner recently, according to Facebook reports. Makes me nervous walking my dog alone.

Prescottdanni123 · 13/10/2024 19:07

To the people saying that 'it's the owner, not the dog' is a load of rubbish, where do you think these dog's came from? They didn't just fall from the sky, they are the way they are because humans originally bred them to be like that in the first place. And for some individual dogs, it has become genetic. So however you look at it, this entire situation is the fault of humans.

carly2803 · 13/10/2024 19:09

they all need culling,

we also need dog licences for every single dog/owner - if you dont have one, your dog is removed and you have 28 days to sort it or the dog is pts - harsh but its out of control now
