DH won’t let me use his account

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:19

DH pays for a Spotify subscription. I’d like to be able to use it to listen to music while getting ready in the morning (a time when he doesn’t use it). Also I could use my phone to play music for us in the car, instead of him trying to DJ by fiddling with his phone while driving. He wants us to buy a second subscription for me instead of letting me login with his. Mostly because he doesn’t want me to “mess up” his Spotify “Wrapped,” which gives you a report of what you listened to at the end of each year. I am sick of us paying for so many digital subscriptions. Yes, it’s only a few dollars a month, but such subscriptions add up! A streaming service here, a storage app there… etc etc. Am I being unreasonable to wish to use his account?

I’m with DH on this one. It’s not like Netflix where each family member gets their own profile.

PumpkinPieAlibi · 13/10/2024 12:23

How difficult is to understand that sometimes, we just want something that is ours? We share so much of our lives with those around us that it becomes extra special to have something that reflects our likes, tastes and personalities ONLY and over time, that thing becomes sacred.

This is clearly not about Spotify but about OP being controlling.

Sharing an account is so annoying. I share with my daughter and therefore my suggestions are so messed up (it keeps putting Disney songs in my pop playlists now!)

My wrapped was absolutely destroyed one year with a load of songs from Encanto in my top 5, got a family account after that 🤣

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 12:23

loropianalover · 13/10/2024 12:17

You sound like such a pain. Obviously he likes to see his Wrapped every year, the fact that you don’t ’understand it’ is irrelevant. You can easily add the duo or family options but if you’re not willing to pay any extra just use the free option.

Why are people hostile to me wanting to understand why the Wrapped report is so great? It’s not some ineffable primordial bond or something 🤣

Did that upset you? If so, why?

The reason we don't share is that you can't both be listening to something at the same time. Wouldn't that be a problem for you?

Bjorkdidit · 13/10/2024 12:25

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 12:12

It’s true there aren’t so many ads, but still annoying. The paid version is so little money for all the music! I remember buying $20 cds. But it’s the cumulative cost of so many subscriptions that bothers me. And they can easily be forgotten about. I’m trying to keep track of everything and cut back on our subscriptions.

But if you want a subscription and actually use it then surely Spotify is one that you keep?

Cut one of the other 'many subscriptions' instead.

Why are you making Spotify the hill you choose to die on, when you've already said you have so many other subs going out each month? - look at all your sub, decide the ones you each value and prioritise those. Don't martyr yourself for the sub you both actually want.

Mercury2702 · 13/10/2024 12:28

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 12:21

We share all expenses.

In that case not then but I’m still with your DH. It’s something for him, I’d be annoyed if my Spotify suggestions and algorithm were based on music that wasn’t mine and surely he’s entitled to something for just him that’s a little over £10 a month, that’s a bit more than £2.50 per week that a lot of people would spend more than that on an odd coffee

Wexone · 13/10/2024 12:28

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:25

Duo accounts still cost extra money every month.

it's not much bloody extra ? if you want to use it that's the way things work now you have to pay for it.

zaxxon · 13/10/2024 12:28

Wrapped is a hugely popular feature among Spotify users. The bigwigs at the company know this, and I'd very surprised if they weren't planning to expand it in future years - more data, more options, more bells and whistles. If your DH likes it, he'll only feel more FOMO as they roll that stuff out.

samarrange · 13/10/2024 12:29

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 12:18

This logic makes sense to me.Why pay even a few dollars extra to these big tech companies when you don’t need to?

Have you looked into this amazing new technology called "radio"? They even have it on the Internet now. Unlimited free music, no sign-up required, and in many cases no ads either.

So you never pay for anything you don’t have to? Of all the money you spend having two Spotify accounts would be the last frivolous thing left? I mean arguably you don’t “need to” spend any money on Spotify at all!

My DH would tell me (rightly) to take a hike if I started nitpicking over £5 while spending money on my own “things” - I buy nice pens instead of cheap biros, I buy certain branded food items where he can’t tell the difference from value brand but I can, I buy lunch out because it’s convenient when I could bring a packed lunch…

Unless you actually can’t afford it then your DH is allowed his own set of priorities- you don’t have to always agree with them, or understand them. Does he entirely agree with every last cent you spend?

Look, this is like taste.

Some people love marmite, others hate it.
The ones who love it could spend hours, days!, explaining why, the ones who hate it wouldn’t get it.

Just accept it’s important to him.
You dint understand why, that’s fine. You dint need to. But you can and should respect your dh views on something that really has little impact on you.

QuantumPanic · 13/10/2024 12:20

I have a really old car - I have to physically connect my phone to the CD/radio unit to play music. BUT I can still verbally tell my phone what music to play using driving mode. No fiddling necessary.

When you enable apps to access your microphone, you unfortunately give up who knows exactly how much privacy to big tech companies.

Lol yes it's infuriating! When we split our single Spotify account into a family one, I had to spend absolutely ages unliking all the tracks DD8 had liked. But I couldn't work out why my weekly Release Radar playlist was still giving me bloody Ava Max and Selena Gomez! Finally I worked out that I also had to unlike the albums and unfollow the artists too. It took forever!

AAudreyHorne · 13/10/2024 12:33

It only costs an extra fiver to turn the subscription into a family one where you all get your own accounts.
As a PP has said, that's less than the cost of 1 album in the 90s.

I wouldn't share my Spotify account either, I love my suggested daily mixes and wouldn't want anyone's else's listening choices to affect that.

TSMWEL · 13/10/2024 12:35

@PBJlover it didn't upset me, I'm a grown adult. But I like to see my stats, as many posters have said upthread. On Apple Music you can see them anytime, but on Spotify you have to wait for the Wrapped. They also make you a playlist from your most listened to songs from that year. Mine was polluted with Disney songs 🤣

Also it tells you if you're in the top % of listeners for a specific artist, which if you are a fan is a nice thing to know. Some artists send a video message to top listeners.

Throughout the year, too fans on Spotify are also given the option to buy merch early etc from artists.

As many other posters have said, use the free version if you don't want to pay the extra few dollars but I'm with your husband here.

FairCrow · 13/10/2024 12:35

We have the Duo account. I just like that bit of privacy. Same with my Kindle account - he wouldn't comment on the things I read but there are some things that you don't want to share and I think that's healthy.

Maybe someone here could help me understand why the Wrapped report is so cool. He doesn’t use the recommendation or generated playlist feature, and I don’t use it enough to ever cut in to times he listens, so really the sole benefit he wants from the extra cost is the Wrapped report.

You obviously don’t get it and you don’t have to. It won’t help to explain it to you. Yabu.

LordBummenbachsMagnificentBalls · 13/10/2024 12:37

I pay for DS and I to have separate apple music accounts because on the few occasions he used it, my “For You” station ended up inundated with his taste in music for weeks. If I use my music I very rarely find a specific artist or album to listen to, I use the channels or suggested playlists that apple’s algorithms have worked out based on my listening history and taste. Sharing an account would mean having to frequently skip past someone else's music.
I can see what you mean about the cost of subscriptions building up, but if you think about how much it would cost you to go back to a buying cds model, you are still probably saving in comparison by having a subscription- maybe try framing it that way?

I walk my dog a lot with music playing so when I think about the fact this subscription is basically two meal deals, it doesn’t really touch the surface and is good value.

OnlyFannys · 13/10/2024 12:37

My partner used my amazon music account to listen to loads of bloody wrestling music 🙄 so now I can't use it to recommend me music because it just comes up with stuff I hate. Team DH

Thank you for explaining some of the appeal of wrapped.

I was taken aback by all the “don’t understand it, just accept it!” posts.

This thread is starting to remind me of an old (and very rude) joke that ends with "You're not just here for the hunting, are you?".
