DH won’t let me use his account

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:19

DH pays for a Spotify subscription. I’d like to be able to use it to listen to music while getting ready in the morning (a time when he doesn’t use it). Also I could use my phone to play music for us in the car, instead of him trying to DJ by fiddling with his phone while driving. He wants us to buy a second subscription for me instead of letting me login with his. Mostly because he doesn’t want me to “mess up” his Spotify “Wrapped,” which gives you a report of what you listened to at the end of each year. I am sick of us paying for so many digital subscriptions. Yes, it’s only a few dollars a month, but such subscriptions add up! A streaming service here, a storage app there… etc etc. Am I being unreasonable to wish to use his account?

We have a joint bank account and share all expenses. Something I’ve realized through Mumsnet is rare in the UK (I’m in the US where it’s normal).

I dint think it’s that rare tbh.

But there is an attitude re ‘his’ money & ‘my’ money you dint find everywhere.

DogInATent · 13/10/2024 12:04

So when you said, "DH pays for a Spotify subscription" you actually meant "We pay for a subscription for DH". You implied separate finances in the wording of the post. In that case just pay for a second one or a duo from the same joint account and stop being so tight-fisted about it.

Yes, it’s only a few dollars a month, but such subscriptions add up! A streaming service here, a storage app there… etc etc

You're trying to save a few dollars on a subscription service that it appears you would both value. Go look at the other subs to find the ones you don't value to find the savings.

Yes, that’s correct. Sorry for the misleading wording. We pay for the account for him.

I’ve always been curious about this on Mumsnet.

Use the free account there's really not a lot of ads...

IDontDrinkTea · 13/10/2024 12:09

Sharing an account is so annoying. I share with my daughter and therefore my suggestions are so messed up (it keeps putting Disney songs in my pop playlists now!)

Nope, no way would Dh or I be happy with the other using our Spotify accounts. We have 3 accounts, one for each of us and one for dd, for exactly this reason. I think it’s a weird thing to share, especially when the cost is minimal and it’s a luxury service anyway. You don’t need it, but if you want it, you have to pay for your own account.

MzHz · 13/10/2024 12:11

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:41

He doesn’t use the suggestion feature.

It doesn’t matter what he uses or doesn’t use, he’ll pay an extra couple of quid and be happy that his music isn’t messed up by yours, you will be able to listen to Spotify at the same time (you can’t if you’re sharing a login)

just agree and he can change his membership to Duo. It’s a couple of quid a month, a lot less than a full membership and is exactly how the membership is supposed to work. You’re not supposed to share logins

daisychain01 · 13/10/2024 12:12

I've never paid for Spotify. I mainly use it for gym sessions when I want to do a spin class on my own, so only need it once a day, maybe twice a week.

every so often you get 30 mins ad free, which is nice. All the podcasts I listen to are free.

if you're strapped for cash and can't pay a tenner a month, then just do what I do, use it free.

Yellow2024 · 13/10/2024 12:12

I'm with you OP we just share one account. And actually move around account for the best offers. I don't care about Spotify wrapped.

It’s true there aren’t so many ads, but still annoying. The paid version is so little money for all the music! I remember buying $20 cds. But it’s the cumulative cost of so many subscriptions that bothers me. And they can easily be forgotten about. I’m trying to keep track of everything and cut back on our subscriptions.

I know this is in America, which seems to have lax car safety rules, at least in parts, but why the hell is your problem sharing his Spotify account and not the bit where he’s operating a (no doubt enormous) vehicle while messing around inputting numbers into a tiny screen?!

I’d genuinely throw my DH phone out the car window if he was putting us and other road users at risk in that way, sod enabling him to do it. Either he gives you the code to his phone, you get a Spotify account yourself and plug your phone in or you just drive in peace and quiet. But for stop risking actual lives for the sake of choosing music in the car.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 13/10/2024 12:13

I voted YANBU but that’s just my perspective. I have a Spotify premium account that my DS, My DH and my DS’ girlfriend are all logged into 🤣 They all also share my Amazon Prime and my Netflix. But then I don’t care about things like Spotify wrapped (I’ve never even looked at it, but my DS does since he uses it more than anyone) I do understand your husbands stance, I just don’t agree with it-why pay extra when you can just share

I've shared my Disney and netflix and prime and all those cause you can make separate profiles. I'm not sharing my Spotify. I'd rather pay for the family one so my partner can get their own profile. I really enjoy the playsits they make for me and their reccomendations. Also if it is a 30min day getting ready music then YouTube playlists are good or you can listen to their music.

LushLemonTart · 13/10/2024 12:16

Just click on his profile and invite yourself to duo. It's only £5 more.

loropianalover · 13/10/2024 12:17

You sound like such a pain. Obviously he likes to see his Wrapped every year, the fact that you don’t ’understand it’ is irrelevant. You can easily add the duo or family options but if you’re not willing to pay any extra just use the free option.

Sausagedognamedmash · 13/10/2024 12:17

We share a Spotify family account with my mother in law and nieces and nephews, however my kids use my log in for everything. Every Christmas my Spotify wrapped really disappoints me 😂 I can get why he doesn't want to share. If I had a choice, I wouldn't!

This logic makes sense to me.Why pay even a few dollars extra to these big tech companies when you don’t need to?

SpiggingBelgium · 13/10/2024 12:18

You sound whiny, frankly. “But I’ll still have to pay extra for a Duo account!” “But I’ll have to hear commercials if I use the free version!” “But I’ll be mildly inconvenienced!!! 😫😫😫”

The only answer you really want is “Yes, your husband is an old meany who should do what you want”.

QuantumPanic · 13/10/2024 12:20

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:57

Yes, I tell him not to do it. When he wants to change the song, I say I’ll do it for him. But then he needs to unlock his phone, which is still a hazard (we have an older car without a screen console hookup). I’d be happy listening to the car radio but he has specific songs he wants to hear. It’d be safer if I could just play whatever song he wants from the passenger seat.

I have a really old car - I have to physically connect my phone to the CD/radio unit to play music. BUT I can still verbally tell my phone what music to play using driving mode. No fiddling necessary.

Mercury2702 · 13/10/2024 12:20

Actually it would be cheaper to have the duo if you split it. I was previously paying 11.99 for just mine but me and my sister have duo which is 16.99 but we split it which works out at 8.49 a month which is cheaper than the 11.99 I was paying for just me

I share an amazon account with DH. He reads a lot on kindle unlimited, I listen to a lot on Audible. We like totally different things, and it does my head in to have my algorithm completely messed up by his murder mystery novels. I can't even remember why we do it this way, but it seems like a faff to try to disentangle it now. If I had my time again I'd keep our accounts separate.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/10/2024 12:22

I’m with DH. Dd used to log in to mine and my wrapped ended up with her music all in the top ten lol. Hedwigs theme was no 1!
