DH won’t let me use his account

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:19

DH pays for a Spotify subscription. I’d like to be able to use it to listen to music while getting ready in the morning (a time when he doesn’t use it). Also I could use my phone to play music for us in the car, instead of him trying to DJ by fiddling with his phone while driving. He wants us to buy a second subscription for me instead of letting me login with his. Mostly because he doesn’t want me to “mess up” his Spotify “Wrapped,” which gives you a report of what you listened to at the end of each year. I am sick of us paying for so many digital subscriptions. Yes, it’s only a few dollars a month, but such subscriptions add up! A streaming service here, a storage app there… etc etc. Am I being unreasonable to wish to use his account?

YABU. Just get a family account - we have this and it’s cheaper than separate ones.

Wegovypictures · 13/10/2024 11:31

But you can have a free Spotify subscription if you don't mind adverts, which considering you only want it for the morning seems a good option?

I'm with DH, my Spotify is sacred!

Free account has commercials.

as someone said, music is criminally cheap these days, pay the relatively small amount to listen to endless music or suck up the short ads.

Spotify also has an algorithm. So it suggests and makes playlists based on what you listen to . I wouldn't want to share an account with anyone else , not just based on the wrapped . Definitely get a duo sub or family sub .

He doesn’t use that feature. He only listens to music he specifically chooses.

It's very annoying to have someone else use the log in so we have the family one. A duo account is not that much more although it sounds like OP is refusing to pay for that (even though it's less than a solo account) and refusing to have ads on a free account.

ChocAuVin · 13/10/2024 11:34

I’m with your DH on this one. It’s important to him and I get it.

WetBandits · 13/10/2024 11:34

Nah I’m with him, it’s really annoying. I was on a 3hr solo drive and my music kept stopping. Eventually remembered that my Spotify account is connected to our Alexa, which DP had put on without realising that it would cut my car music off. He had been getting similarly annoyed when it kept cutting out for him 😂 we had a fight that neither of us knew we were having at the time!

We have pretty similar taste in music so it doesn’t throw my recommendations off too much, but only being able to listen on one device at a time with a standard account is reason enough to have a dual account.

RandomMess · 13/10/2024 11:35

I share with DH, he made various playlists that we download and I just use them.

We have a family account but it's already maxed out.

StayGoldAgain · 13/10/2024 11:35

I'm with your husband too. We have a family account, four separate logins. We all look forward to our Spotify Wrapped!

Acsa · 13/10/2024 11:36

YABU, as others have said, get a Duo subscription. Or, if you really don't want to spend more money, put up with the ads.
DP accidentally connected mine at home while doing housework and I still got various recommendations of his from that one time!

MILLYmo0se · 13/10/2024 11:37

If you are logging in on his account you can't use it if he is so what's the point

SoupDragon · 13/10/2024 11:38

PBJlover · 13/10/2024 11:25

Duo accounts still cost extra money every month.

Yes, because if you want two people to use an account you have to pay for two people to use an account.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 13/10/2024 11:38

I bet there are spurned exes up and down the land who are frantically accessing their former partners' Spotify to listen to endless Jedward, Cheeky Girls, Fast Food Rockers, Wiggles and the like - just so they will be flooded by the algorithm recommendations, especially when in the car and trying to woo their new squeeze!

Ramblomatic · 13/10/2024 11:38

My partner would be more open to pegging than me using their Spotify, and I don't blame them! 😅

I use YouTube premium - Pretty much the same as Spotify with the YT Music app, but you also get no ads on YouTube, and can watch/listen to stuff on YT while navigating away from the app.

Gladicalled · 13/10/2024 11:38

Yabu. It’s exactly why Netflix lets you have multiple profiles.

I wouldn’t want someone using mine either. Get a duo account.

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 13/10/2024 11:31

Would you spend an extra few quid a month on something important to you?

Maybe someone here could help me understand why the Wrapped report is so cool. He doesn’t use the recommendation or generated playlist feature, and I don’t use it enough to ever cut in to times he listens, so really the sole benefit he wants from the extra cost is the Wrapped report.

I used to share my account (that i'd had for a few years) with my daughter and it completely messes up suggestions. If I'm playing 90s music for example, it starts suggesting other 90s bands that you'd forgotten about and it's very useful. When my daughter started using it, it completely messes all of this up. In the end I paid extra for the duo account just to get my suggestions back

You don’t need to understand it, you just need to accept that HE does.

Why does it matter?

He likes it. Some people like it. Why do you need to understand this.

You asked him he said no and told you why. What’s going on that’s it so important to you, that you can’t just accept that?

Tomorrowisyesterday · 13/10/2024 11:41

I'm with you OP, three of us use the same account here. I quite like getting the odd burst of what ds listens to.

He doesn’t use the suggestion feature.

This is starting to read like a Spotify add. It’s against their TOS for two people to use an individual account. He’s explained to you why he doesn’t want you to use it. Just because you don’t think his reasoning is sound doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a reason. He also wouldn’t be able to listen at the same time as you so you’d be depriving him of enjoyment for the sake of wanting to avoid a few quid.

Either get your own, get a family account or put up with ads

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 13/10/2024 11:42

We share - makes sense.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 13/10/2024 11:42

Is the wrapped report the equivalent of where you tell yourself that you buy hardly anything but healthy fresh fruit and vegetables from Sainsbury's - but then your Nectar round-up at the end of the year reveals that your most-bought items were Yorkies and Wotsits?!

Iacj · 13/10/2024 11:43

It’s interesting for seeing your music listening, lots of people tracked this even prior to spotifys unwrapped.

Also he never looks at any of the generator playlists and picks stuff from there to add to his own?

youre wanting it for a limited amount of usage, so just use the free account, yes there’s ads, they’re relatively short in length.
