To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Why are you angry for her? She chose to put herself, and the stability of her kids, at risk. No one forced her to do this.

People have free choice. Sometimes their choices are stupid.

Sure - but men don’t seem to be dying from BBLs in the same way. Why’s that?

Tapestree · 26/09/2024 14:15

It is absolutely tragic, and says a lot about our society and the expectations on women to endure pain and to butcher themselves in order to conform to a norm. However, I do think that the title of your thread is insensitive to the individuals involved- she didn't simply "want a bigger arse", she was a victim of societal pressure, and your wording sounds like victim blaming to me.
It's all incredibly sad for all involved.

Tittat50 · 26/09/2024 14:15

I just read this story. I couldn't see why this happens in this procedure. It isn't the first time yet I understand it's usually when women have gone abroad.
I thought it was not being practiced in this country for that reason.
All for a big bum. It's insane.

I wonder what they tell patients having this procedure is the actual % risk of death

SensibleSigma · 26/09/2024 14:15

I have issues with our society that encourages extreme body modification as a normal part of life.

We shouldn’t accept expectations of grooming and presentation, or negative comments when people don’t meet them.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 14:15

@Function men just die from the mental health crisis they have to deal with in silence instead. There's tragedy on both sides of the fence.

FumingTRex · 26/09/2024 14:16

Its in poor taste to blame the woman who has died. No doubt she was told it was all safe etc. The poiht of having regulation is so that when we buy things/pay for services we should be able to trust they are safe.

jeaux90 · 26/09/2024 14:16

Socialisation and internalised mirrors a real number on some women.

On the actual story. Surely injecting that much into your body should be made illegal though?

The actual implants aren't a risk, but this isn't the procedure she had.

But yes it's sad.

Feedable · 26/09/2024 14:17

Fifty years ago no woman thought about body modifying in this way. I think this particular op should be criminalised. Poor children.

Tittat50 · 26/09/2024 14:17

They must be downplaying the risk I agree.

jeaux90 · 26/09/2024 14:17

That should say internalised misogyny

MeMyCatsAndI · 26/09/2024 14:17

Think plastic surgery and Botox etc all just needs to be banned unless it medically necessary such as a fire victim etc.
It all looks very OTT and ridiculous, and the government clearly can't stop the back street butchers from killing.

Sure - but this thread is about women. Men take up enough airspace elsewhere.

It happens because the people doing it aren’t medically trained. They don’t recognise the symptoms of tissue necrosis, sometimes mistaking those symptoms for bruising. By the time infection from the necrosis sets in and causes sepsis, it is too late.

BadgersGalore · 26/09/2024 14:19

I'm very sorry for her daughters. Judging by her social media she was extremely obsessed with looks and cosmetic procedures (and she performed aesthetic treatments herself); I really hope her daughters haven't been too influenced by this and they get their confidence and self-worth from more than their appearance.

It's a tragic, needless waste, and I hope something is done to prevent it happening to other women.

PixieLaLar · 26/09/2024 14:20

I think that applies to the surgical BBL where fat is removed first. I thought this woman had a ‘non invasive’ treatment where filler was injected but by someone who wasn’t actually qualified to do so.

I agree with you though its very sad people seem to put beauty above health and especially being a mother - that should have been her priority.

Alectoishome · 26/09/2024 14:20

I feel angry AT that woman, rather than for her. Perhaps that's wrong of me, obviously I do feel horrified for her. But when I think of her children, I feel rage at her vacuous stupidity, why was she thinking about the size of her arse when she had 5 children to raise.

Then why did you bring men into the discussion?

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2024 14:22

A lady local to me died after stomach stapling/bypass went wrong.
She had a 3 year old and she didn't want him to be teased at school for having a fat Mum, and now he has no Mum.
This surgery is too normalised by Celebs and in the media, its proper actual surgery with all the risks etc not a quick touch up at lunchtime.

Circumferences · 26/09/2024 14:23

Function · 26/09/2024 14:14

No, but I know two blokes who went climbing together in a recent storm, both of them died because they were so stupid to carry on and should have turned back, but their ego stopped them so they left a total of five children without a dad.
I also know blokes who have been stupid on the road and died.

I think some people just make bad decisions and die as a result. It's tragic but really on reflection I think "stupid decisions that leave you dead" affects men far worse than women!

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/09/2024 14:23

I think it’s some form of mental health problem and body dysmorphia rather than social pressure which drives this sort of obsession with a particular look. I don’t know a single man (and I know a lot of men) who would particularly want their partner to have a giant round bum and I don’t know a single woman (and I know a lot of women) who has one or aspires to have one. There doesn’t seem to be some big drive from either sex pressuring women to get BBLs because all the women they see have one and all the men they know desire them.

Newbutoldfather · 26/09/2024 14:23

It is a very tiny section of society who would ever consider something as absurd and risky as this.

Ultimately, you can blame societal pressures up to a point, but with schools giving strong body positive images in PSHE and mainstream media having a variety of different shapes and sizes, you have to go down a very particular social media rabbit hole to think a ludicrously misshapen arse will transform your life.

I am sure most people on this thread would never consider anything like it.

User19876536484 · 26/09/2024 14:23

I wonder how much filler needs to be injected into a bum to make it noticeably bigger.
