To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Then why did you bring men into the discussion?

Knew that was coming. To highlight that this particular ‘stupid choice’ seems to be the preserve of women and provoke thought as to why that may be. Not to put men and their woes front and centre. That’s the difference.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/09/2024 14:13

Why are you angry for her? She chose to put herself, and the stability of her kids, at risk. No one forced her to do this.

Because women are inundated with images of idealised beauty and men’s demands of what a ‘slim thic’ body should look like.

Tinkerbellflowers · 26/09/2024 14:27

Do women have procedures like this for men? I thought it would be for themselves/wanting a figure like they see in magazines etc. I'm not so sure that men even like the fake look.

Fetafiend · 26/09/2024 14:27

Why is the bum enlargement so risky compared to all the other cosmetic surgeries like boob jobs, nose etc?

justasking111 · 26/09/2024 14:27

Every operation carries risk. I was so shocked when Joan Rivers died. I look at Katie Price and am baffled.

Mental health issues should be addressed.

Sure - but this thread is about women. Men take up enough airspace elsewhere.

Pretty odd to relate this issue directly back to Mens' experience and then complain becasue another person makes a further comment about Mens's experience 😂

BabyR · 26/09/2024 14:28

I struggle to have sympathy. I thought everyone know how risky treatments like this are - ESP when carried about by people who barely know right from left.

@Function men just die from the mental health crisis they have to deal with in silence instead. There's tragedy on both sides of the fence.

But the men’s mental health crisis isn’t brought about by women, whereas women’s crises often are.

Thebellofstclements · 26/09/2024 14:28

Function · 26/09/2024 14:14

Sure - but men don’t seem to be dying from BBLs in the same way. Why’s that?

I would say "because men are too sensible" but then you see them with tattoos on their faces...
Safe to say that this is not a beauty pressure most of us feel. It's very extreme and not on the radar of the majority of the population because it looks so fucking ridiculous.

poppyzbrite4 · 26/09/2024 14:29

There's enormous pressure on women to look a certain way. There always has been but with the advent of social media, they're bombarded with these images 24/7.

Women in the public eye are mocked for any perceived imperfections, then mocked if they have surgery and derided if it goes wrong.

Porn also plays a big part in this; the pornification of women's bodies from removing all body hair, to breast implants to butt lifts. These women are trying to look like sex dolls.

I can only think it must be the sheer volume of filler that's needed to augment an arse. You're only getting 1ml or something for filling lines or lips.

She died from complications during an endoscopy.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 14:29

@GuPuddingRamekinHoarder it's brought about by the inherently sexist and patriarchal society we live in, both issues can exist at the same time

EngineEngineNumber9 · 26/09/2024 14:29

I find it an interesting moral discussion. I studied law at university and I remember the classes where we were taught that no one can consent to harmful practices eg extreme BDSM so even if they did consent, the perpetrator is still committing a crime.

I find it interesting that this doesn’t extend to surgeons (who, additionally, have presumably taken the oath “do no harm”) performing non-medically necessary procedures on completely healthy patients that come with a risk of death.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 26/09/2024 14:29

Ive had a big bum all my life and i loathe it....I spend my life trying to hide it...why on earth anyone would want this procedure is beyond me.

It’s the way this one was done. Essentially, lip filler injected on a massive scale.

Lafondah · 26/09/2024 14:30

Very cr-ass thread title

Hydrangea58 · 26/09/2024 14:30

There is no pressure from society in general, to have a bigger bum. I don't know anyone who has even talked about it.
It's more to do with algorithms that keep giving you more of the same, once you start looking for something.
Yes, it's tragic for her family, but she made the choice herself and probably didn't realize how dangerous the procedure can be.

Me too. I envy those women with tiny bums.

No one said they can’t exist at the same time. But women shouldn’t be responsible for men’s mental health crisis.

Very true. I can also hardly believe that @Function is almost blaming men for adult women stupidly CHOOSING cosmetic procedures. No one forced her.

SuburbanKel · 26/09/2024 14:32

Just have a look at the people who will have been carrying out this procedure and where she went to have it done...

Getonwitit · 26/09/2024 14:32

She made her choice, nobody forced her to spend thousands of pounds to mutilate herself. Now were are being asked to contribute to her funeral and that does make me mad. If she choose to prioritise her ego over buying life insurance that's her fault. Her community wants a huge show off funeral, they can pay for it. I doubt any money raised would be spent on her children's education after all that community don't value education.

Because men are often part of the demand for ‘slim thick’ bodies on social media.

Because it is our society and culture that has made her think she needs this surgery

This constant desire to perform for the male gaze

Constantly putting our value into the way we look
