To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Why is the bum enlargement so risky compared to all the other cosmetic surgeries like boob jobs, nose etc?

I know someone who died on the operating table having a boob job. Desperately sad for her family and partner.

All medical procedures carry a risk.

Because it is our society and culture that has made her think she needs this surgery

This constant desire to perform for the male gaze

Constantly putting our value into the way we look

Because it is our society and culture that has made her think she needs this surgery

No it isn't! I'm quite shocked at the amount of people saying she has had this done to conform to society or to look a certain way for a man.. what a load of cop out rubbish which conveniently excuses women from making poor decisions.

Society and culture may influence our likes/dislikes, and normalise things, but it doesn't MAKE you do anything you don't already want to do, the only reason people have these things done is because they want them, they have access to them and they want to look a certain way for themselves.

mitogoshigg · 26/09/2024 15:02

I'm angry is legal to offer it, and angry on behalf of her kids. She chose to go ahead, why? But I accept some people are quite frankly not smart enough to decipher medical advice and vain

SerendipityJane · 26/09/2024 15:04

I'm angry is legal to offer it,

Try and ban it, and see who objects most (after the people who profit from it).

Cattery · 26/09/2024 15:04

It’s pathetic. The sheer vanity. Surely the woman had better stuff to be getting on with

Yes but the person carrying out your boob job on the operating table is a qualified medical doctor who can talk you through the risks of surgery and anaesthetic. And who is trained to know how to carry out the procedure and what to do if things go wrong. And you are in a hospital, with lots of other professionally trained staff for support.

You are not in a shed in someone's back garden, being injected by someone who has no qualifications other than a few GCSEs.

Because you were brought up in a society where shaving is a social norm. That's social pressure to look a certain way. You're denying the concept of social pressure while conforming to it. And don't make up excuses about how it was a personal choice you just happened to discover one day; it's expected that you'll shave and you capitulated.

It’s also social pressure to not smell like you haven’t washed for a week. Not all social pressures are the same.

DadJoke · 26/09/2024 15:05

It's a 1/4000 chance of death. People take that level of risk for sports all the time - you just judge this choice as morally less worthy. Do you get as angry at people who drink?

If all those posters performatively weeping their crocodile tears for those children actually gave one shit about them they would not be slagging off their mother on a public site.

Shame on all of you who have done this.

Agreed, a lot of the language is distasteful, talking about her bum.

Impossible to calculate the risk on such an unknown procedure.

Justice4Friend · 26/09/2024 15:08

A big bum - that's my worst nightmare - can't believe people are paying for it!
Why is this stupid and dangerous surgery even allowed in the UK - nonsense like this needs to be banned.

BunnyLake · 26/09/2024 15:08

Ohmychristdawn · 26/09/2024 14:58

Of course it's driven by the male gaze. You're naive in the extreme if you can't see this.

Or is it driven by women who want a male gaze? I’ve never met a man in my life who has shown any interest in women getting bum lifts or boob jobs.

midgetastic · 26/09/2024 15:08

Weak people will end up doing stupid things because of society pressure and it saddens me that sone people want to excuse it under some kind of "all her own fault" "free will" myth

I guess once you accept that we don't have as much free will as we like to think , that we all conform to society demands and biological drivers to a greater or lesser degree , you feel a little less important in your own life ?

Of course this is the left vs right , society vs individual choice that runs through our country - just a very specific example

Desperately sad , and quite nasty that people blame the victim here

Lentilweaver · 26/09/2024 15:08

I have been noting the general spread of porn culture/aesthetics, but any discussion both here and elsewhere is often met with " Stop clutching your pearls". And too often by men who seem to have infiltrated MN.

Lafondah · 26/09/2024 15:09

OP asks if its tragic. Yes, 100% as it was totally self inflicted and avoidable.

I'd love to see all this cosmetic filling stuff banned and removed from being normalised on TV. Look at Love Island, everyone was saying how beautiful Grace was when all I saw was a feline-esque mutilaited face like the Bogdanoff twins. The whole "industry" needs huge regulation or banning.

I feel angry AT that woman, rather than for her. Perhaps that's wrong of me, obviously I do feel horrified for her. But when I think of her children, I feel rage at her vacuous stupidity, why was she thinking about the size of her arse when she had 5 children to raise.

Yes exactly.

TinkerTiger · 26/09/2024 15:09

Enough of the ‘pressures of society’ bullshit. The vast majority of women DO NOT have BBLs, so clearly it’s not that pressing an issue.

She made a personal choice, a stupid one IMO, but it was her choice to do it.

The inquest was presented with this number based on a lot of data.

Yep, the problem with fillers is they're so often done outside a medical environment.

I was having this conversation at the hairdressers just the other week. As well as hair and nails, they also do aesthetics, and the lady who does them is a trained nurse and very personable. When I was there I heard her explaining to someone on the phone that they don't offer bum fillers. So we got talking about that after, as you do, and she said she considers them a lot less safe than face and wouldn't do them outside a medical environment. I didn't know any of this til she told me, and thought of her this morning when this sad news came out.

I'm very sorry for her daughters. Judging by her social media she was extremely obsessed with looks and cosmetic procedures (and she performed aesthetic treatments herself); I really hope her daughters haven't been too influenced by this and they get their confidence and self-worth from more than their appearance.

It's a tragic, needless waste, and I hope something is done to prevent it happening to other women.

Well clearly her daughters won't be influenced by her now, will they? Her death may act as a deterrent to them to get cosmetic procedures. However, unless there are significant changes in society in the next decade, I'd be very surprised if at least some of their self worth wasn't tied up with their looks. They're female. That's how it is the world over. Its not the fault of our mothers'.

I'm also fed up of people setting up GoFund Me pages for everything.

Granted that you don't have to contribute but someone dying from unnecessary plastic surgery doesn't seem a worthy cause. Lots of people lose family members in tragic circumstances but don't get the begging bowl out to fund a fancy funeral or whatever.

Yes, this! Ghastly people.

Totally different story. The one being discussed here was non surgical.
