To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Vanity ! and too much money - which should have gone to family life - tragic

Fifty years ago no woman thought about body modifying in this way. I think this particular op should be criminalised. Poor children.

In the past women felt pressure to wear corsets that were extremely tight and damaged their body

I feel angry AT that woman, rather than for her. Perhaps that's wrong of me, obviously I do feel horrified for her. But when I think of her children, I feel rage at her vacuous stupidity, why was she thinking about the size of her arse when she had 5 children to raise.

I completely agree with this. Although it's technically not her fault. Her kids will now grow up without a mother because of her stupid vanity.

HotSource · 26/09/2024 14:36

Huge sympathy to the woman’s family, but really, despite some popular culture celebration of the look, most of us manage NOT to take expensive risks or make physical modifications to our bodies.

Individuals have to bear responsibility for this. Those who make money from it, those who choose to take the risk.

Unlike surgery and procedures designed to support weight loss this doesn’t even have any health benefits.

I find it an interesting moral discussion. I studied law at university and I remember the classes where we were taught that no one can consent to harmful practices eg extreme BDSM so even if they did consent, the perpetrator is still committing a crime.

I find it interesting that this doesn’t extend to surgeons (who, additionally, have presumably taken the oath “do no harm”) performing non-medically necessary procedures on completely healthy patients that come with a risk of death.

That's quite a reductist view of R v Brown - this was a case against a backdrop of extreme homophobia, it was a group of gay men into extreme sexual practices, but they did list a lot of exceptions in the case.

R v BM is more closely aligned to this case anyway - a person undertaking body modifications. In that case, a guy was removing ears and splitting tongues and was done for ABH. The defining criteria for whether an ABH has been committed is if there was good reason for it. For cosmetic surgeries (that are carried out lawfully and within the regulatory framework), there would arguably be a good reason.

But R v Brown doesn't really apply to this case anyway as if I recall correctly the people who carried out the procedure have been arrested, for manslaughter. There will no doubt be more uncovered in the following investigation.

Crunchymum · 26/09/2024 14:36

Sounds like she has 5 daughters. What a world they have to grow up in?

I despair having to raising daughters sometimes.

takealettermsjones · 26/09/2024 14:37

It's social media that killed that woman. Nobody in real life has these massive arses and tiny waists. She's not seen it on the school run or in the supermarket. She's seen it on the unregulated juggernaut that is the modern internet.

Anonym00se · 26/09/2024 14:37

Is pure selfishness. My DS went to Turkey for a gastric bypass, which cost buttons. Literally off the plane, onto the table and back on a plane the next day. I begged her not to do it. She’s got 4 DCs, and wasn’t even morbidly obese (size 16/18). She just couldn’t be arsed dieting and wanted a quick fix. She’s had loads of complications since and now looks emaciated.

I can’t understand why people would risk leaving their children orphans in the name of their own vanity. Those poor children. 😔

I do believe there is a belief that it is best to be slimmer, that is not a new pressure to anyone in society.

There is however no pressure on anyone to have a super Kardashian style bottom, that is just pure vanity. The aesthetics industry, which this poor woman actually worked in is responsible for promoting this culture of it being completely normal to inject parts of your body with these substances. It's unregulated, its not a medical environment, it beggars belief how anyone could think injecting any part of your body with anything it doesn't actually need is necessary.
The 'clinic' she went to was in a house and had a entrance that looked like a shed. The people that own the business had lips overly full of filler themselves and clearly a skewed view of how the human body should appear.

People who have mentioned men on here, I've never heard any man ever suggest a woman needs overly plumped lips, or a gravity defying arse.
This is all down to the aesthetics industry, mainly run by women, and what they promote on social media.

Closetome · 26/09/2024 14:37

I’m also intrigued as to what happened here given it was non surgical and “just” filler rather than a full on BBL. It sounds like she became very unwell very quickly. Could that level of filler cause some sort of major reaction perhaps?

I don’t have any issues with women having cosmetic procedures although don’t have any myself. But it needs to be regulated ASAP so that only trained medical professionals can administer them rather than by Sharon down the road who has not a single GCSE who’s done a single 3 hour course in her mates living room.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/09/2024 14:38

I also disagree that women are forced into this by societal pressure. Bollocks. Many women are not bothered about it!

MattSmithsBowTie · 26/09/2024 14:39

Why anyone would have something injected into themselves by someone who is not medically trained in that particular area is beyond me. The law needs to change.

Lafondah · 26/09/2024 14:40

The 2 words to blame are social media and its that simple. Some people devote their lives to wanting to look good to show off. I suppose vanity is the ultimate cause but without the need to compete and show the world how good you are via SM it wouldnt be so extreme.

What's sad is how beautiful she looked before destroying her face and body.

Do you shave? There's no reason for it, it's societal pressure.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 26/09/2024 14:41

Instead of blaming the victim, I prefer to fight to dismantle the deeply entrenched systems of misogyny and ageism that have for years told women that they are worthless unless they are young, buxom and 'fertile looking'.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 14:41

@poppyzbrite4 I shave because I prefer how my legs feel and how my skin feels. It exfoliates my skin well and I find it more pleasant

ReleaseTheSausages · 26/09/2024 14:41

Bbq1 · 26/09/2024 14:31

Very true. I can also hardly believe that @Function is almost blaming men for adult women stupidly CHOOSING cosmetic procedures. No one forced her.

Just like no one forces women to conform to pointless and sometimes harmful beauty standards?

It’s misogyny through and through. Since advertising existed women have been unwitting targets to make companies millions.
Social media and filters has made it so much worse and has created a huge issue of widespread body dysmorphia. At the root of it though is a foundation of women not being good enough.

Agreed, it seems to be those who aren't the brightest that seem to fall for the idea of needing plastic surgery.

sharpclawedkitten · 26/09/2024 14:42

MeMyCatsAndI · 26/09/2024 14:17

Think plastic surgery and Botox etc all just needs to be banned unless it medically necessary such as a fire victim etc.
It all looks very OTT and ridiculous, and the government clearly can't stop the back street butchers from killing.

I agree, there's no reason for it, and it's often left to the NHS to pick up the pieces.

However, she was an aesthetician herself and I wonder if she was just trying out the procedure as it was being introduced in her clinic?

Don't be a fool. Shaving offers no risk to ones life, and very little monetary cost.

You say that but I now work with, and have worked with, female lawyers who are keen on Botox and surgery. It's not about intelligence (well, not academic intelligence, anyway).

But it needs to be a warning.

if there is societal pressure we need to point out the damage.

No one is remotely happy that she has lost her life,

Ive had a big bum all my life and i loathe it....I spend my life trying to hide it...why on earth anyone would want this procedure is beyond me.

Well, I had 32Hs and it was beyond me why anyone would want massive boobs. Anything above a C is unnecessary. We are all influenced by our circs.
