Could this be passive aggressive fat shaming?

Im a UK 20 and I feel the heat. I’m always a bit warm. My work gets very hot. Big windows and no ventilation.

I rarely put the air con on because as soon as I do some of the woman I work with complain it’s too cold. I bring a desk fan to
work with me and keep it aimed at me and no one else.
I work at a doctors surgery. Lots of the patients make comments about how hot it is in the waiting room. Some even wait outside.Very often woman patients always make a comment on my fan saying how they could never work with a fan as they’d be freezing. If the air con is turned on some woman will comment how cold it is.
I think FFS it’s not you that has to sit in here all day. Men never complain, never comment. It’s mainly middle aged
woman. Yes I’m fat, yes I get hot. I try my best to have a small discreet fan on my desk. But woman seem to make such a song and dance about it.
My husband said today he thinks it’s a passive aggressive way for them to call me fat.
Anyone else think there’s any truth in this?
Is it a way to come across ultra feminine to be cold?
Sorry if this come across bonkers?

@GiddyRobin

I've also never met anyone like this IRL. - who does performative eating and 'performative coldness'

If people are complaining about it on MN, I wonder if they're overweight women who, like you, think thin women opting for smaller cake sizes or not being able to finish a huge meal as a jibe.

Yeah this. ^ Sounds like a few overweight women on this thread are massively projecting, and assume every single person who doesn't eat/can't eat huge portions, are doing it 'to get at them' to show them up to make them feel bad about themselves.

Truth is, no-one cares if you eat a cake meant for 4, and others only eat a sixth of it, and it's YOUR problem if you feel bad about someone eating more than you. The 'teeny tiny' sniping and cattiness on here (from some) is utterly pathetic, and frankly, fucking nasty! Some posters clearly have issues around their weight and size, but they are their issues to sort. I am not going to eat more than I want to want - or CAN eat, because someone who has issues about their weight and size, feels bad when other people eat less than them.

And I am FAR from a teeny tiny - I am overweight, (around 2 stone overweight at the moment,) and have lost 2 and a half stone since early April. I am working very hard to lose weight and am very proud to have lost 2 and a half stone - without any diet injections either. Pure fucking hard work and exercise and self discipline.

And the one thing that gets right on my fucking tits is when some twat at work, or in my social circle dangles a mars bar or a cake in front of me and says. 'ooooh go on, have a big slice, you know you want to!!!' to try and tempt me, because they are jealous and bitter that I have lost weight, and am looking better than them.

See also, people waving booze in front of you when you have given up alcohol, or people blowing smoke in your face when you have given up smoking. Bitter, spiteful, nasty, disrespectful behaviour from jealous little individuals who don't have the willpower and strength to do anything themselves that will make their health better, so they pour scorn over those who do. And the 'teeny tiny' snipes and scorn on here from a few posters is fucking horrible.

How DARE you bash people who don't eat big portions? You don't know what they are going through or what they have been through. Some of them could have health issues, and some of them could have an eating disorder, (and could have struggled with their weight all their lives.) These same people who mock and deride people who eat smaller portions would run off and cry if someone fat-shamed them. But according to them, attacking people who eat less/slimmer people is OK!

Also, lay off attacking people who are on the slimmer side who are a bit cold. If someone wants to wrap up a bit coz they're cold, what the fuck has it got to do with you? Clearly projecting because YOU have issues!

As I said earlier, I find it very hard to believe someone who has lost a lot of weight would snipe at people who eat small portions, and get cold easily - apparently due to being very slim and not eating enough (according to the OP and a couple of others!)

!

I'm a little surprised that a man would be emotionally intelligent enough to understand the concept of "competitive coldness/undereating/teeny-tiny" and how women make sly digs to each other.

I wonder if OP's intention WAS to wind us up and let us go!

You and your cronies enjoy your sexist stereotypes don’t you?!

Exactly. And she only orders a salad and delicately picks at it. (When in my experience men quite like a woman who devours a steak...wonder why....)

There’s a fetish where men like to watch women eat messy food. Not saying this is the case for a woman eating steak but I wonder if it taps into a similar thing.

Why do men seem to be able to have a fetish for everything?

youcancallmebabefortheweekend · 17/09/2024 10:30

Who the fuck cares about what men like? 🤣 My goodness, how very feminist. 🤣

I’ll eat my salad. I won’t be ‘devouring’, I’ll leave that to the competitive overeaters.

Well here's my thread on losing weight on MJ (I've namechanged but I'm the OP). plenty of discussion about thin people judging fat people

You shouldn't take weight loss drugs. Learn about healthy eating, eat less and exercise more. | Mumsnet

I was wondering if that was you! Hi again 😁

I'm well on your side on that thread but I'm not so convinced on this thread. I think it's bullshit that people should be judged for taking weight loss drugs, yes. But equally, I don't want to be judged because I don't have a massive appetite. Like I said on that thread, I haven't done anything special to not be mad for food. So I'm not trying to ram my small appetite down anyone's throat. It doesn't even occur to me that other people would be perceiving it as sniping at them.

Now that I hear people are thinking that, please let me reassure you that it isn't the way of it. I like food but I can't eat when I'm not hungry. That's all.

rainbowbee · 17/09/2024 10:32

Not necessarily. My work has a woman who likes her heater on full blast, and another who has hers blowing cold air. My desk is between theirs so my front is hot and my back is cold! I like my window cracked because I hate smells. Someone else thinks it's fine to spray deodorant and eat fish suppers at his desk. It's just part of the crappiness of a workplace, not everything suits everyone but if it's not causing actual distress you just put up with it. It isn't personal.
My own experience with GP surgeries is that they tend to attract women who fuss over small things. Again, not personal.

TheGreatIndoors · 17/09/2024 10:33

There are a great many women who care what men think, sorry to disappoint!

Men like a woman who enjoys a steak cos it apparently means she...enjoys putting meat in her mouth...Grin

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/09/2024 10:33

In general men feel the cold much less than women. That’s why the men aren’t commenting, not that they’re nicer than the women.

Obviously there are some exceptions to that - menopausal women being one, and yes often larger women - but generally women feel colder. That’s why offices and conference venues are always so cold - the temperature is usually set to men’s comfort.

I have a friend who goes weak at the knees watching someone eat a messy burger. 🤣 weirdo

@Arctangent hello! No it's fine, have your small appetite. Just don't loudly make it your entire personality whilst side-eying a load of fatties please! Grin

Therd is judgment in both directions in reality - esp MN where people are anonymous - and the one engenders the other.
It’s pretty low.

The eating fetishes are usually about...oral sex...just sayin'

Kebab, anyone?

TheGreatIndoors · 17/09/2024 10:39

Although actual pathological "feeder" fantasies about getting the woman up to 600lbs and immobile...those are more to do with control. Not a harmless imagining the person with their face in YOUR meat.

Haha no definitely not doing that. I'm too busy worrying about myself to be trying to upset others.

I do absolutely loathe freezing cold offices though. I spent ten miserable years at an office where someone cranked the air con up to 11 every time there was the slightest sign of sunshine. I'll happily admit I'm still bitter about it.

And I wear shorts in January so that should tell you how bloody cold it was! The bastards!!!!!! 😁

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/09/2024 10:42

Apollo365 · 17/09/2024 09:23

Air con should win. You can add more layers for cold but you can’t strip further if you are hot.
hot and sweaty patients in drs surgery waiting room is surely more unhealthy too.

Edited

I disagree. There’s something about air con cold that gets right into your bones and makes you feel quite unwell. No amount of layers that would be remotely suitable for the workplace can combat it.

I think as @TheGreatIndoors says, it must be about oral sex. It’s not just burgers, it’s anything messy, the more that spills for her the better, although she’s at pains to point out that it’s only women that she considers to be hot. Whereas I see that and feel a bit sick and think someone needs a bib. Doesn’t matter how hot they are, it would turn me straight off.

MissAshworth · 17/09/2024 10:44

I have had to wear a parka in a library. That shouldn’t be necessary surely. Tbf people complained and then it was like a sauna. There must be some middle ground here.

Sartre · 17/09/2024 10:44

I think you’re insecure about your size and should probably work to change it- either by losing weight or working on your confidence. No idea why your DH made that connection, they’re just commenting on not liking fans blowing at them all day rather than your weight.

TheGreatIndoors · 17/09/2024 10:45

My mother was a matron in a hospital for decades. Her PET HATE was the ward being too hot. She always said it was a breeding ground for bugs and would throw the windows open. I'm sure all her patients suddenly felt much better and able to go home (to get away from her tyranny - she even had a rule about which side the "open" side of the pillow was to be on!)

And yes, in this day and age we need to not be cranking the heating up unnecessarily. Think of the financial cost as well as the cost to the planet!

It being women makes more sense…well sort of, I don’t get it regardless, I’m like you and it would have the opposite effect 🤢 I wonder if there are any women who enjoy male messy eaters 🤔

Our Sainsbury's is SO cold I cannot wait to get out of there. It baffles me. They spend millions on marketing, yet don't consider the comfort of their customers.
It was hideous in the summer, I took to taking my coat with me. I wasn't the only one.
I understand it's to keep the food fresh and they don't want to put it behind doors or in cabinets because people want to be able to grab things easily.
