How Often are you at Home?

Aquarius1234 · 07/09/2024 00:13

I feel I prefer to be out the house more often than in it. Even though I'm indoors lots of evenings by 6pm.
It surprises me that my neighbours seem to rarely leave the house apart from food shopping?

Even if I worked from home I would think it's weird to go days without leaving the house?
I also find it annoying that my neighbours seem to be in a huge amount!!
I don't have much of a social life at all but couldn't bear to go months without doing stuff at the weekend or odd evening.
I do stuff alone to get out the house. It's good to get some fresh air . .

@Aquarius1234 What you say suggests you've never had next door neighbours before, because most of us in the UK do (unless we are very rich and own lots of land around the house). Are you new to the UK?

LonelyInDville · 07/09/2024 02:08

I’m like your neighbors. I did a lot of running around on the weekends for 20 years, now I just want to enjoy my house, it’s my favorite place 😊

I wfh and I will admit most weeks I only go out to grocery shop about three times a week. every once in a while I will start feeling guilty for not going out with my adult DD so I will force myself to go out with her. And once every couple of months I meet up with a friend, I’m a serious introvert and not really interested in much outside of the house spent so many years running around on the weekends.

I want to be able to sit outside and not feel that someone could see me. Not that they care.
But I do. I think living alone probably makes you hear many more noises. Esp in morning or night.
Unless I'm glued to the TV with volume up.

Then move to the middle of nowhere. Im not sure what other sort of answer you could possibly be looking for.

I’m one of those people who cannot stay at home all day (genuinely don’t understand how people who WFH do it!) so I am always out for at least a few hours each day.

That being said - you do have privacy in your own home. You just need to stop stalking your neighbours and watching out for their every coming and going. The more you obsess over them the more you will hear/see. What does them being at home have to do with you? It’s not as if you’re sharing a house with them. I’ve got neighbours each side - couldn’t tell you who goes where or when as it does not affect me in the slightest.

I’d have sympathy for you if they were disruptive or noisy neighbours (I’ve been there before - it drove me to the brink of insanity) but they sound completely normal. The neighbours aren’t the issue, it is you OP.

Edited

WFH doesn’t mean you don’t leave the house, I tend to leave the house at least three times a day which is a lot more than when I was travelling to work.

I know, I was referring though to the many people (quite a few of my friends and family) for whom WFH literally means that they don’t leave their house whatsoever for days on end, I’d go mad!

I'd probably stay in my pj's too much. Never a good thing.

Imagine living next to people that never leave the house unless for supplies!
I want privacy in my garden .. didn't hardly use it at all this summer.

Hi op. Think you should consider a house move.. 😂

I have always been someone who needs to get out but I couldn’t care less what everyone else is doing.
when I lived at home w my parents I did go out a fair bit
but I never bothered monitoring other people’s movements.

do you, but it sounds like you’re unhappy at home with your neighbours being so close so I’d suggest you look at moving if you can of course…
msybr to a non-terrace where you’re not watching/hearing your neighbours every time you’re at home?

edited to add: I pay a mortgage so I’d like to spend time at home if I’m spending so much money on my home! But I do still go out just don’t watch the others lol

Aquarius1234 · 07/09/2024 02:17

I wish the walls were thicker! And I had a brick wall private garden.
Middle of nowhere too scary!

So what do you expect the solution to be if you won’t compromise? Your neighbours won’t magically make themselves vanish for your convenience..

Moving is so stressful and expensive though..
Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to do small home improvement. Like tiles in bathroom. More like ideas atm. Few bits of new furniture.

Perhaps nicer fencing next year

Yes I want to be at home sometimes and them not be there!!

Thank goodness I try to go out even when I'm not bothered.
I do think it's weird to be home 24/ 7 actually.

Why on earth is it "weird" if some people wfh??

I go out when I feel like it.

Aquarius1234 · 07/09/2024 02:26

I think my house was sold to me by saying you wouldn't think it's actually a terrace you can't hear the neighbours..
Fell for it.

Onthegrid · 07/09/2024 02:29

For years I left the house by 8am and was never back before 6pm add to that running DC to evening and weekend activities, shopping and other weekend stuff I was never at home. Now I wfh part time 3 days a week, spend 4 days a week doing what I want and my DC have left home.

On my 3 working days I don’t leave the house apart from a walk if it is not raining. I like being at home.

WalkingonWheels · 07/09/2024 02:31

This is such a weird thread.

Im disabled and pretty much housebound other than medical appointments now and again. I have never once imagined that my neighbours would judge me for being at home all the time. Thinking about it, I'd assume that they were intelligent enough to realise I don't get out much because of disability, seeing as they must see nurses, physios etc back and fore.

I couldn't give a shit how often my neighbours are in or out. I'm either working, or in agony. My thoughts never go to what someone I don't know might be doing.

People have every right to be in their own homes. They have every right to remain there for as long as they want. They pay to live there and your "privacy" is your problem. If you don't like it, move.

I think this is the most batshit thing I've ever seen on MN.

I don't think it's weird to wonder how often you spend out of the house.
I assumed it had probably been covered on mumsnet numerous times before.
Bit like asking how often do you socialise outside.

And yes I don't know when they go out for short periods as I'm out.
But it's annoying when your in a mid terrace and can hear both sides. One side is louder. So yes please go out more... or a very long holiday!!

I would concur, 'go out more... or a very long holiday'

NOTE: With the demise of the Milk Man the 'milk bottles on step' is no longer an aid for us, Please close downstairs curtains or ideally a note on the door with something like 'Gone Away, back on 24th' . Thank you.

It’s not weird to ask how often you get out of the house. It is weird, however, to stalk your neighbours

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 02:42

Home all week - I go out maybe 3 or 4 times a week, rarely for more than about 90 minutes (gym class or shopping)

I don’t need to leave my house much because I can work, read, sew, garden, cook, have friends over, play games, etc etc very happily from here.

I notice when one lot of neighbours are away on the weekends because I don’t hear their kids playing football. The other side is more noticeable because as soon as they go out their cat comes over to ask to sleep on the couch next to me instead (he likes company)

Not sure why but that bit made me laugh. 😂

And the cat comes inside your house?

OP posts:
PoopedAndScooped · 07/09/2024 02:55

Im sick and barely leave the house.

Maybe once every two weeks, sometimes longer

No one’s business !
Nosy fuckers!

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 02:55

No, but he tried really, really hard to! He sits at the back door and yowls for me. If it’s warm and the back door is open, he comes in. If our cats spot him, he runs away but if they’re sleeping or out, he continues to try his luck.

He’s about as stealthy as a rhino, so he only makes it to the couch if I have music or the radio on and am busy. Then he jumps up next to me.

This started when I was cat sitting for them for a few weeks some time back and would give him a cuddle several times a day. Now he’s pegged me as “main fuss-dispatchers aren’t here so I’ll go to the back up fuss-dispatcher until they return”

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 02:56

(He ignores the other members of the family. I’m the Designated Cat Worshipper in his opinion)

PoopedAndScooped · 07/09/2024 01:18

So doesnt this tell you something??????

If Nurses are there alot the person is more than likely house bound

So how about you have some empathy for them and count yourself god damn lucky you can get out and dont have health problems that keep you inside your house !

This. Should be a clear indication to OP that this neighbour must be housebound due to health reasons or age but she mourns her “lack of privacy “in her own bloody home . For fucks sake.
