Watching this show ‘The secret lives of Mormon wives’ I had no idea their lives were like that or allowed to be.
Anyone Mormon here or know any Mormons?

It's as real as any other 'reality' show.

So probably completely fake.

NeverEnoughPants · 06/09/2024 22:16

What are their lives like?

My cousins are Mormons, and their lives seem for the most part pretty normal.

Bigcat25 · 06/09/2024 23:14

I haven't seen the show but the Mormons I know are very wonderful, generous people in relationships with equality. I know several Mormon women who went on to get advanced degrees/PHDs later in life and have great jobs.

FuckThePoPo · 06/09/2024 23:18

Well I'm sure they are great apart from no tea coffee or alcohol, no abortions, no gays. No thanks 😂

Bigcat25 · 06/09/2024 23:21

Trying not to be too outing but I have some Morman relatives who are not anti gay. They have their son's gay friend stay regularly when in town. That's probably not typical, but the other Mormon I know aren't judging anyone for their sexuality.

Bigcat25 · 06/09/2024 23:21

That said I've never been to SLC.

This is the religious equivalent of saying ‘my husband is great because he doesn’t hit me, aren’t I lucky’.

Ofthemall · 06/09/2024 23:25

I’d love to be a mormon (can you just become one or do you have to be born into it / marry into it?!) but I love coffee too much so I don’t think they’d want me 😂

Most religious people live normal day to day lives. It’s the belief systems that’s usually whackadoodle, some more than others. Mormons are bordering on Scientology level of cultish woowoo.

Bigcat25 · 06/09/2024 23:29

Ofthemall: you can convert but they do tithe ten percent of income to the church, fyi. The church has accumulated massive wealth.

Why do you want to be a Mormon?

frustratedhuman · 06/09/2024 23:35

"switch it off, like a light switch, it's a neat little Mormon trick"

No, I'm just saying the Mormons I know are great people who don't fit the stereotype that exists.

hby9628 · 06/09/2024 23:41

@frustratedhuman amazing show! I'm going to see it in a couple of weeks

I'm intrigued by this religion.

RobinHood19 · 06/09/2024 23:41

Mainstream LDS (commonly known as Mormons), or Fundamentalists? I believe reality shows with poly families would belong to the latter denomination.

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/09/2024 23:43

A university friend was Mormon. She didn’t drink, smoke, gamble, have coffee etc, did quite a lot of stuff at her church, seemed fine about gay people, wasn’t somebody I’d probably ever have been best friends with, but was perfectly pleasant. I imagine that as with most religions, there are a lot of different levels of belief ranging from fundamentalist to liberal.

ncforcatquestion · 06/09/2024 23:54

I think it looks like a good life. I would have liked to be able to stay home with lots of kids, cooking, dressmaking and making jam

Is it a choice?

HeliotropePJs · 07/09/2024 00:00

No idea what the show is like, but based on your reaction, I'm assuming these are more extreme/fundamentalist Mormons. Is there polygamy or cult-like behaviour? Are women not allowed choices in how they live, whether they work, etc? There are different types of Mormons, and most of the modern ones aren't nearly that extreme.

ncforcatquestion · 07/09/2024 00:00

poppyzbrite4 · 06/09/2024 23:56

Is it a choice?

But you could argue that we don't really have a choice the other way around. To be a mother means nothing in this society

Offcom · 07/09/2024 00:01

All those Mormon missionaries are really wasting their time if you can’t convert

WildImaginings · 07/09/2024 00:03

The show about 'Mormon' swingers?

Haroldwilson · 07/09/2024 00:07

Aren't they supposed to break ties with adult children who leave the church? Fucking heartbreaking, cruel cult.

As for longing to be a Mormon wife - that's stupid and there's nothing to stop anyone from making jam or dresses whatever, without the cult hocus pocus

Grin

You can even convert (they can even convert you) after death! That's what's behind the huge increase in historical family tree information being added to the Internet.

rayofsunshine86 · 07/09/2024 00:12

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the more extreme, cult-like sect.

Normal LDS Mormons are great. I've never met one who I thought wasn't a good person.
