Watching this show ‘The secret lives of Mormon wives’ I had no idea their lives were like that or allowed to be.
Anyone Mormon here or know any Mormons?

Grin

You can even convert (they can even convert you) after death! That's what's behind the huge increase in historical family tree information being added to the Internet.

I think it’s only a small sub-group who believe in doing this though, as mainstream LDS followers are essentially anabaptists who think baptism must be a conscious choice. Though to be fair, it doesn’t strike me as any more weird to baptise the dead than to baptise babies, who are equally unaware.

SD1978 · 07/09/2024 00:54

Brought up in LDS religion, and happy and proud to have been so. Had many great opportunities, and met some amazing people. These shows are always an over exaggeration as real people with real every day lives are boring.

SD1978 · 07/09/2024 00:56

@Haroldwilson - nope. Doesn't happen. Some people may choose to, but it's not a requirement, and personally, I don't know anyone who has ever cut off children for leaving, being gay, or drinking coffee.

LostTheMarble · 06/09/2024 23:27

Most religious people live normal day to day lives. It’s the belief systems that’s usually whackadoodle, some more than others. Mormons are bordering on Scientology level of cultish woowoo.

Oh I am not disagreeing with that. I think their beliefs are batshit. But it's their choice, nobody is forcing them into it.

However this thread isn't about the belief system. This thread is about what their lives are like.

If you want to know what Mormonism is actually like, watch ex Mormons talk about their survival stories on this channel:

Cults to Consciousness

They talk about all religious cults, but Mormonism features heavily. It is truly, truly vile.

No, I'm just saying the Mormons I know are great people who don't fit the stereotype that exists.

So they’re not forced birthers?

PMAalltheway · 07/09/2024 03:18

My great Uncle converted to the Mormon church to marry my great Aunt. They were two of the most generous, caring and loving people you could meet. They didn't drink tea, coffee etc. but when we visited they would always have those available for us. As with many religions there are extremes which make good reality TV.

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 03:19

Haroldwilson · 07/09/2024 00:07

Aren't they supposed to break ties with adult children who leave the church? Fucking heartbreaking, cruel cult.

As for longing to be a Mormon wife - that's stupid and there's nothing to stop anyone from making jam or dresses whatever, without the cult hocus pocus

The Jehovah’s Witnesses do that, it’s called being Disfellowshipped. You don’t even speak about them.

I know a pair of siblings who left the JCCofLDS and they weren’t cut off. Their parents were on the less fundamentalist side, though, so maybe that was more of a family-specific thing.

Galoop · 07/09/2024 03:23

I have known some Mormon people, perfectly normal and very lovely. Just like any religion you have extreme versions and then just normal people 🤷🏻‍♀️

@frustratedhuman amazing show! I'm going to see it in a couple of weeks

I'm intrigued by this religion.

LOVE Book of Mormon. Funniest show ever! But not for the easily offended 😂😂

Fraaahnces · 07/09/2024 03:45

I went to high school with one. Mid 80’s. (In Australia - pretty few and far between tbh. Very much scoffed at by wider society.) She was lovely, academic, funny. Pulled out of school to get married at 15. Lived in a caravan in the driveway of her parents home. Returned to school initially, very subdued and probably traumatised. She quit and became a hairdresser. Later left him, the church, and returned to study. She runs a bar.

bpirockin · 07/09/2024 03:51

My neighbour is a Mormon, and according to her there are strict guidelines/rules about their underwear - something akin to knickerbockers and plain white. Somehow I can't imagine Marie Osmond in the things I've seen on next door's line. If the lack of coffee wasn't enough to put me off, that would!

autienotbaughty · 07/09/2024 04:10

A woman who lived in our village a few years ago was a Mormon. All I really knew was she went to church, wire long dresses or trousers. Didn't drink alcohol, coffee or own a tv. She was a lovely person

Baseline14 · 07/09/2024 04:14

I had a friend who was Mormon at uni. Her upbringing was exceptionally similar to mine brought up in evangelical Christian family, very strict especially with females, we both married at 20, whole life revolves around church activities so we would be there at least 4 times a week and all socialising would be with people at church, no alcohol, dressed 'modestly' and mostly typically feminine. She did wear garments which covered shoulders and came to her knees but we never discussed it. I guess it would be a bit of a strange life for people who hadn't grown up like thst but wasn't that different from mine.

Shakenandstirredup · 07/09/2024 05:08

I find the idea of garments but lots of plastic surgery confusing. Why do women have to be modest?

OneLilacPeer · 07/09/2024 05:14

This article shares quotes from women who are LDS about the show: https://www.deseret.com/faith/2024/09/06/the-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives/

It also includes part of an official statement from church leadership. It sounds like the show is offensively inaccurate, like most 'reality' tv.

I found this about garments, which are worn by men and women: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/temple-garments

I'm not sure about "lots of plastic surgery"? Is that from the show?

The Temple Garment and is Sacred to Latter-day Saints

Temple undergarments are worn by faithful Latter-day Saints as a reminder of sacred beliefs and commitments.

Shakenandstirredup · 07/09/2024 05:19

@OneLilacPeer not seen this show but based on what I’ve read & yrs ago there were a lot of Mormon influencers.

Shakenandstirredup · 07/09/2024 05:22

I’m sure plastic surgery is big business in Utah & Mormon cultures encourages it?

Shakenandstirredup · 07/09/2024 05:25

Men are into it too.

OneLilacPeer · 07/09/2024 05:27

@Shakenandstirredup

Maybe it's a Utah thing? I think it's a separate cultural phenomenon from the religion.

OneLilacPeer · 07/09/2024 06:06

Or, could just be that influencers are more into plastic surgery than the average person. 🙍

That said I've never been to SLC.

Do you think allll the Mormons live in Salt Lake City and no place else?
Have I got news for you.

I grew up with a Mormon girl - very sweet. And her family was lovely - very nice people. And wealthy. Her dad owned a big poultry company and her mother was a housewife. She had much older siblings.
I spent the night once and her parents went out to dinner with friends. When they got home, her mother invited them in “for a drink” - I about fainted, and we followed them inside, where they shared a can of Pepsi four ways.
Later on, my friend married a Methodist.
I remember her telling me the one thing she dreamed of was getting married in the Mormon Temple in SLC, which only Mormons can enter. I was disappointed that I couldn’t attend her wedding.
I didn’t attend her wedding to the Methodist, either, but we’re still long-distance friends.

Chattenoire · 07/09/2024 06:27

A very good friend of mine is Mormon. I met him through work. I think he's potentially on the liberal side.

He's desperate for his wife to work (he finds it unfair that he works long hours and she's a SAHM of primary school kids, so to him she does have time to spare).

He didn't want any more kids, she did. Which is why they got a cat as a compromise for no more kids.

When we've been out for dinner he tends to not tell.his wife as she's "the jealous" type.

They do live in Utah.

Oldseagull · 07/09/2024 06:33

Before anyone seriously considers becoming a 'Mormon wife' please do one thing for me.

Google 'Mormon child sexual abuse'.

I'm sure making jam won't be anywhere near as fun when you have to turn a blind eye to your child getting raped, otherwise being ostracised from everyone you know and love including your other children.

Any belief system which involves giving up responsibility for your morality and critical thinking skills to a third party tend to have quite a few wronguns in it.
