Mormon wives

Watching this show ‘The secret lives of Mormon wives’ I had no idea their lives were like that or allowed to be.
Anyone Mormon here or know any Mormons?

We have a couple of great friends that are Mormon. Their faith has never been a problem in our friendship, and we're convinced atheists.

Early on, we agreed that we had different beliefs, and moved on. They are generous, lovely people I love very much.

I know a few mormons as online friends and I don't think you can say "Mormons are like this or like that" anymore than you can say "Roman Catholics are like this or like that" The "official" Church of the Latter Day Saints totally reject polygamy of any kind.

They only reject polygamy because they were going to get kicked off their land if they didn't. Very convenient that god changed his mind on that one just in time.

Surely if the god they were getting these messages from was all knowing and omnipotent, he would have gotten the rules right the first time round?

chocolatemademefat · 07/09/2024 10:15

You should have given us more information - I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. On the other hand I might go and watch it now!

I have no opinion about what they choose or not to believe. Just pointing out that, like an other religion, they are not a homogenous mass.

The best show about Mormons is Big Love. A drama series, but very well researched and written with depth and sensitivity. The central family is a polygamist one, with the patriarch having been thrown out of the compound he grew up in, and now living in the suburbs of Salt Lake City. It explores the relationship between the official Mormon church and the polygamist offshoots.

Of course not. That's just not a point I would choose to defend them on.

I’d love to be a mormon (can you just become one or do you have to be born into it / marry into it?!) but I love coffee too much so I don’t think they’d want me 😂

Why would you love to be a Mormon?

ncforcatquestion · 06/09/2024 23:54

I think it looks like a good life. I would have liked to be able to stay home with lots of kids, cooking, dressmaking and making jam

I mean, you can do that. You don't need to be a Mormon.

HotCrossBunplease · 07/09/2024 14:47

I suspect that @Ofthemall was just making a throwaway joke about her coffee addiction!

I live right near a main mormon temple in Lancashire. There are always lots of young Mormons in our little market town who have come to live here from all over the world whilst, I'm guessing, they are undergoing some sort of training? They are always extremely smartly dressed and very polite. I walked past a group of them yesterday and they all politely moved out of the way and smiled at me. Whereas, just a few minutes before I'd walked past a group of "non mormon" youths, who were loudly swearing, spitting on the floor and generally being very intimidating. I know who I'd rather walk past! I also enjoyed watching the series "Big Love" and "Sister Wives" but I was under the impression polygamy was frowned upon these days by the main mormon church and it was only these offshoot "rebel" communities where it still goes on?

I am not defending them either, just stating a fact.

Hard agree! Bloody loooved that show.
Though I imagine it was v much story for drama’s sake rather than a true view of current Mormonism. Though the ‘compound’ was based on a true polygamist off-shot.

I would never want to be a Mormon even if it didn't contradict many of my personal beliefs and values.

It's not inherently abusive, and I'm sure that most Mormons are perfectly nice people, but the culture definitely makes it easy for abusers, and there is an attitude of covering up to protect the church from being cast in a bad light.

Under the banner of heaven is based on a true story. Tara Westover 's book "Educated" also shows clearly how the religion can enable abusers.

The same could be said of the Catholic church too though (although perhaps naively I think they are trying to change this).

Thatcat · 07/09/2024 15:41

We have a Mormon church down the end of the road. The week after we moved into our house, two Morgan lads knocked on the door and welcomed us to the community. Nothing else. Just said they were from the church.

A couple of weeks later we were stripping walls and pulling up carpets, with the front door wide open. They were walking by, asked us how we were getting on and if we wanted a hand… Nicer than my own family and friends 😂. I can see why people would join with the sense of community.

Under the banner of heaven, Christianity, in their different faiths, have committed the most atrocious acts against human beings.

Abusers today, don't come in religious faith packages. You can find them in every country, household or belief system.

Do you think allll the Mormons live in Salt Lake City and no place else?
Have I got news for you.

I grew up with a Mormon girl - very sweet. And her family was lovely - very nice people. And wealthy. Her dad owned a big poultry company and her mother was a housewife. She had much older siblings.
I spent the night once and her parents went out to dinner with friends. When they got home, her mother invited them in “for a drink” - I about fainted, and we followed them inside, where they shared a can of Pepsi four ways.
Later on, my friend married a Methodist.
I remember her telling me the one thing she dreamed of was getting married in the Mormon Temple in SLC, which only Mormons can enter. I was disappointed that I couldn’t attend her wedding.
I didn’t attend her wedding to the Methodist, either, but we’re still long-distance friends.

I realize not all Mormons live in SLC, just that the Mormons I know are on the more liberal side, and maybe in Utah they tend to be more conservative. (In general. Obviously there will be those that are more conservative or liberal everywhere.)

There is no 'typical' Mormon, just like there is no typical Christian. I know a huge amount of Mormans, off shoot of my maternal family. The ones that left the church were never shunned, the ones from south africa left there as the racism was phenomenal. My nephews ex wife re married again, within the Morman church, only to be left high and dry at 6 months pregnant, as the guy couldn't deal with repressing his homosexuality. Look it up, there was a huge drive to marry homosexual children off, in doing so, hopefully, they would become straight. Ruining their lives, their partners lives, who were often tricked into this and the lives of their children.
But saying that, overall, the majority are lovely, everyday people, who really care about others.

Stepawayfromthefridgenow · 07/09/2024 16:34

The Mormons on this show were not what I’ve seen before! Lots of swinging etc it was nuts

So they don't have rigid gender roles or are homophobic?

Boomer55 · 07/09/2024 16:47

I wouldn’t take a lot of notice of a so called reality show.🙄

Misthios · 07/09/2024 09:41

But if you are a LDS member who follows their teachings, pre-marital sex isn't something you'd be interested in doing.

Come on, you can't be that naive?
All the young students who have been expelled would tell you otherwise.

Ohhhthedrama · 08/09/2024 17:19

I just started watching this yesterday. I'm up to episode 5. I started watching because Ben & Ronnie are recapping it on crappens and I wanted to have an idea of who they were talking about. I'm hooked. Whitney is a real piece of work & Taylor is crazy if she believes that guy is sober. They all seem really familiar to me. I'm sure I've seen them all before in something (Not momtok ).

KenAdams · 13/09/2024 16:08

The soda thing is wild to me. We know lots of Mormons and soda was a huge no no but there was a "clarification" in 2012 that soda was fine and now it's a huge thing?!

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives show is absolutely not about strict Mormons though, quite the opposite in fact!

LoftyPeachSnake · 13/09/2024 16:14

Haven't watched the show, but grew up with a lot of Mormons (international school kid).

They have some odd views, and the Mormon church has a weird and pretty racist history. But in my experience they are honestly the nicest people. Very kind and sweet. Miss my Mormon friends! Most of them live in Utah now and have many, many children 😅
