To make a birthday cake and not cut it

Miaowm · 01/09/2024 19:12

I want to make my daughter’s birthday cake as I do every year. This is the first year she will
be having a party with friends and family at a venue. I wanted to take the cake for singing and then hand out matching cupcakes. Is this out of order?
A couple of reasons for this, not really anywhere suitable to cut the cake at the venue and I really don’t want a cake I’ve spent ages on to be crushed in a party bag then thrown away

Why not keep the birthday cake for home and take cupcakes to the party?? Or homemade biscuits/,cookies in a little gift bag, that way they won't get too squashed

FirstTimeHomeowner · 01/09/2024 19:15

This absolutely makes sense. I've done it like this and wish it was more common! All that work for it to be squashed and most of the gorgeous icing end up on cling film 😖

Hoppinggreen · 01/09/2024 19:15

Stunt cake?
I would probably just hand it out if I were you

Putmeinsummer · 01/09/2024 19:16

I wouldn't even bother making cupcakes. Just get a tray bake cake from the supermarket.

Bournetilly · 01/09/2024 19:18

What’s the point in making it if you aren’t going to give it out? I don’t think the children will mind/ know any different though so it’s fine.

Mandylovescandy · 01/09/2024 19:19

A friend takes loads of those plastic tubs (think the takeaway style cheap ones) to hand out cake in so everyone gets a piece that gets home without getting squashed. That might be a good solution

Oor · 01/09/2024 19:20

I think it’s fine. I’ve done it before. Saves the nice cake for home for you all to appreciate and the kids have no idea what’s in their party bags. I just cut up a tray bake in the kitchen bit of the venue - I doubt the kids even realised they had a piece of a different cake

OnlyWhenILaugh · 01/09/2024 19:21

If the cake is to be eaten at a different time I think it should be kept for that different time. Otherwise it seems like you want to show off the cake to the party guests who aren't good enough to eat it.

LadyChilli · 01/09/2024 19:22

I wouldn't bother making a fancy cake for something like that, the effort won't be appreciated. But as that's not the question you asked, I will say that if my child took a piece of cake out of a party bag, in the 2-3 seconds it would take for it to reach his mouth, there is no way on this earth he'd know if it was the original cake. He also wouldn't care. Parents also won't notice or care.

LoneHydrangea · 01/09/2024 19:23

You can’t take a cake for show only! Just don’t take it.

Our kids are grown and I agree, party cake slices end up in the bin, but if you display it, people will expect it to be served.

wetpebbles · 01/09/2024 19:24

yes this is fine

DappledThings · 01/09/2024 19:25

That's daft. I make a cake every year for both DC's birthdays. I take a lot of time and care and spend too much on different coloured icing to make something that reflects their interests that year.

And it gets cut up and squished into party bags because that's the point of cake! It's meant to be eaten and enjoyed. Whatever's left over comes home and get shared out between family.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 01/09/2024 19:26

Batshit. I can't believe some posters are saying 'do it.'

Just get/make cupcakes and give them out.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/09/2024 19:26

So you are taking a cake just to display to guests? I find that odd, sorry.

AnnaKorine · 01/09/2024 19:27

Yes it’s weird. Use the cup cakes with a candle for singing, don’t show off a cake you aren’t willing to hand out.

We went to a party and the cake was obviously specially made. It was beautiful like they always are (and massive!) I was very suprised to find supermarket cake in the party bag and I'm not going to lie thought it was a bit tight for not sharing the happy birthday cake out!!!!! I guess I assumed they were having another party the next day at home or something but if not I think it's a little stingy! Like what would you do with an entire cake yourself!? If you made a nice big one you could give half out at the party then keep half for party tea at home or whatever X

Ohdosodoffdear · 01/09/2024 19:29

That seems like such an odd thing to do. Cart the cake to the venue, light the candles, blow them out, giveaway a different cake, cart the cake home. Why?
Just take the cake you plan to give out to the party, and keep the other one at home. The cake doesn't need an outing.

mynameiscalypso · 01/09/2024 19:30

Can't you just let them eat the cake at the venue? That's what's happened at every party I've been at.

Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers · 01/09/2024 19:31

Ridiculous. Bringing a birthday cake for photo’s pretending it is going to be cut and hiding and then stashing it and handing out cupcakes. How very Instagram.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/09/2024 19:31

Buy a cheap cake for the party and keep the fancy one for at home.

PinkyFlamingo · 01/09/2024 19:32

Why do you say you don't want a cake you've spent ages on to get squished or thrown away? It's not your cake once it's handed over surely?

LoneHydrangea · 01/09/2024 19:34

This reminds me of a party we went to last year in the states where the cake was iced styrofoam. I kid you not.
