Starmer the non charmer

Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

@KendraTheVampyrSlayer

Perhaps he's trying a brand new evolutionary tactic in politics - honesty?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It was awful. I hate the Tories but the timbre of that speech was absolutely horrendous. He judged it completely wrong - turned me right off him (and I voted for him). What we need now is hope.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 16:20

What were you expecting, a song and dance act?

BeachParty · 29/08/2024 16:21

Cluborange666 · 29/08/2024 15:44

Are we going to have one of these threads every day?

Looks like it 😁
I'm just amused to see what oh so clever name people come up with next.
Can tick off "Two Tier Kier" ( getting bored of that one now, it's so yesterday 😁)
Now it's apparently "The Non Charmer" 🙄😂
Wonder what's next 🤔😂

Nothing wrong with putting on a bit of a show.

PickUpPlease · 29/08/2024 16:23

I voted Labour. Because I want a better NHS and education system for the country as a whole. We are high earners and I am bracing myself for the changes in October and am dreading it if I’m honest. I just hope it has been worthwhile and that our public services will improve. Without decent public services we will all suffer, crime will increase and health and productivity will go down.

Despite voting for Labour, I have no issue with these threads. Surely there is nothing more important than the politics of our country and the effects of the prime minister’s decisions. This is a new government. Starmer has given his first speech. A depressing budget is looming. Why should this stuff not be analysed on a forum like this?

SummerSplashing · 29/08/2024 16:23

GinnyPiggie · 29/08/2024 16:11

No, Starmer isn't charismatic - we've had those PMs (Johnson) and they were incompetent weasels. He's fucking bright though and he's driven by wanting to improve things for people.

And yes we are here because of the last 14 years.

@GinnyPiggie

If he's your idea of 'bright' you have a VERY low bar.

minipie · 29/08/2024 16:26

This.

In a choice between charismatic but untrustworthy and lazy, or boring but honest and competent (🤞) I’ll take the latter any day.

Voting people in on the basis of whether they’d be fun at a party is what got us into this mess.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 16:29

@PickUpPlease "Despite voting for Labour, I have no issue with these threads."

I have no issue with political discussion. I do have an issue with people complaining that Starmer hasn't solved all the nation's problems already and doesn't appear to be able to play the ukulele.

This isn't what I'm saying though. Yes he needs to he honest, pragmatic and competent; a bare minimum really, but not a given, as per previous leaders. At the same time, he has not set out a coherent vision for the UK, an aim for prosperity down the line, which leaders also need to consider. I'm not sure why you mentioned partygate?

He probably could play the Ukulele. He plays the flute, recorder and piano, and was a Guildhall music scholar

@cupcaske123

get used to it, we're going to have 4 years of this. everything is going to be the Tories fault, every manifesto point he fails to meet, every tax he increases, everything.

people voted labour, they got labour.

no one can say they weren't warned what it would be like.

And why shouldn't he blame the Tories for the mess the country is in?

If you don't think the Tories are to blame for this shambles, then who do you think is responsible?

I didn't vote Labour but I'm happy that the Tories have gone.

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 29/08/2024 16:53

It's our daily 'we hate the labour party thread' - hurray!

What sort of coherent vision did you have in mind?

Large scale visions for change sound impressive but tend to be extremist and/or unrealistic.

Nuts and bolts are tedious but are actually what’s important. IMO.

I didn’t mention partygate at all Confused

Really? He’s not at all honest.
He could have been honest about his intentions during the election campaign. He wasn’t. People are pissed off because he was elected on a manifesto which hasn’t produced detail on any of the tax changes which look set to
come to bear.

You not able to spread hate speech anymore?

Why did you immediately conflate free speech with hate speech. Who do you think is the arbiter of what constitutes hate?

I'd be interested as to the reasons you think Starmer is "corrupt to the core"?

2tierStarmer and his clampdown on free speech is absolutely terrifying.

Mate, at least get the epithet right. It's "two tier Keir". "Two tier Starmer" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Boomer55 · 29/08/2024 17:09

Starmer is just doing what ever leader of a new government does - whine and blame everything on what went before. 🙄

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 17:10

@Bogginsthe3rd "He probably could play the Ukulele. He plays the flute, recorder and piano, and was a Guildhall music scholar"

Good point. Substitute
"Play the ukulele" with "juggle with 5 clubs"
