Starmer the non charmer

Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

Honestly... The gravitas pool of the British electorate is now two inches deep and evaporating rapidly. It's politics, not entertainment. I rarely hark back to the 'good old days', mainly because they were shit, but just for once I long for the days when people went to the cinema for entertainment and didn't expect it from their politicians.

And once again, your post is all about how someone looks. Pathetic.

CeruleanBelt · 29/08/2024 18:35

I think starmer is exactly the pm we need.

Fuck charisma, we've had years of tory charisma and look where that got us.

It's our daily 'we hate the labour party thread' - hurray!

Well we've had years of multiple, daily Tory hate posts. Why should the current government be immune and not held to account for their failings and unpopular policies?

After 7 weeks, most of which has been summer recess?

Conversely, the Tories were still blaming Labour 14 years after they came to power.

The least Tory voters can do is give Labour one parliament to do their thing. Complain by all means - but give it time, and complain on issues of substance, not on how someone looks or sounds.

I hate the Tories, but Sunak was a small C conservative and a relatively steady pair of hands. If Starmer isn’t going to meaningfully diverge from Tory policy I’d rather have just kept Sunak as at least he has a bit of charisma to him.

😂😂

Then we'll have threads bewailing Starmer wanting everybody to exist on turnips and the occasional mouldy cabbage and how he's become the Strawberry Thief of the Middleclasses and they can never open their William Morris curtains without crying forever more.

You'll be lucky to get a turnip this year. The farmers (who are actually growing crops) have had an awful year.

I am always surprised by how busy the fast food places are, the various chain coffee shops that have proliferated during these hard economic times.

hairbearbunches · 29/08/2024 18:47

I couldn't give a shiny shit whether he's boring or not. I do give a shiny shit about setting the bar so low on the WFA cut off that a lot of pensioners are going to be very cold this year, when his donors, the likes of John Caudwell and Peter Coates are still sleeping very restful nights in the knowledge that there isn't going to be a wealth tax on their billions any time soon.

Not really. Most were Tory love fests about how the tories know what a woman is. After 7 weeks and parliament in recess they've not actually enacted any legislation. Tories were in power 14 years, no hiding how bad they were and they very much deserved the ridicule and criticism. Do you actually think they were any good ?

CranfordScones · 29/08/2024 18:48

He doesn't have a vision. He doesn't need a vision. We don't want a vision.

He needs to take the things we have and make them work. And do so within a reasonable budget.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 18:49

@Andthereitis "I am always surprised by how busy the fast food places are, the various chain coffee shops that have proliferated during these hard economic times."

There are studies showing that people are more inclined to give themselves small treats-like coffee and cake-in hard times when bigger treats are out of reach.

What was your opinion on needless cuts to benefits ? Most of the pensioners who’ll lose out have better incomes than working people plus huge collateral in their homes.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 18:51

@CranfordScones "He needs to take the things we have and make them work. And do so within a reasonable budget"

Yes. What we need is a competent, clear thinking chief executive.

StarrySkiesAtMidnight · 29/08/2024 18:52

I don’t think he’s quite the full ticket.

Normal people have some joy about them when talking about the future, even if it’s some years off. He doesn’t. He gives no credible indication that things will get better, just a never ending litany of doom and gloom.

His one mention of a possible future upturn was when he said that he removed the pensioners winter fuel allowance so things will get better for them. I expect he sees hypothermia as a benefit - confusing hypo with hyper. 🙄

Daysnconfuddled · 29/08/2024 18:52

I'm not saying there aren't a huge number of wealthy pensioners. But the cut off should have been £20k, not those in receipt of pension credit. That bunch are almost destitute. How does being just over that red line they've drawn help to pay the fuel bills this winter?

And what specific needless cuts to benefits are you talking about? I'm all for the 2 child cap.

Pensioners on £12,000 total annual income are no longer eligible for the winter fuel allowance.

Do you think someone on £12k p.a. is wealthy?

Bogginsthe3rd · 29/08/2024 18:54

All I'm asking for is for Kier to consider an entrance like this at Labour Party Conference.

I'd love someone to run the figures and implications of increasing tax allowance for each child a family has.
That way people can have as many children as they want and can earn plenty of money as a family unit to support that.

And to raise the tax allowance to avoid having to "make a note to not sue any pensioners for not paying tax on the £500 over on the state pension to the tax allowance."

Are we going to have one of these threads every day?

We had them when the Tories were in power so it’s Labour’s turn and rightly so

OhmygodDont · 29/08/2024 19:02

He reminds me of the grumpy tour guide of the museum of boring things. Can’t help it. Just very dull here we have a brick. It’s a red brick. There is a yellow brick. We like bricks. Here to more bricks. Better bricks. Brown bricks. For a wee bit of excitement bricks with ventilation holes.

Like a vey rehearsed scripted has no option of their own. Like trying to get though to someone at British Gas off script 😅

Prriorayingly · 29/08/2024 19:04

We got what we voted for. It’s naive to think he’d be any better at being PM, than he was in opposition.

I'm not opposed to banning smoking in areas where it could impact on others

I find it very very weird that it was not in their manifesto. If they were wanting to do this; fine. But share the evidence; make the case and be open and transparent with it

MrsLeonFarrell · 29/08/2024 19:05

I don't want a leader with a big personality, we've had that and it didn't work. I want an efficient leader who can make decisions to fix the problems in the country. It is far too early to see any results from the current government.

My NHS pension is £10k pa. Many pensioners earn more than working people.
And I’m sure that you know that many of these pensioners are sitting on huge amounts of unearned wealth due to the ridiculousness of house prices.
