Starmer the non charmer

Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

I think he's got off to a great start. I think it's sensible and usual for new governments to get some of the painful stuff over early on in a new parliament, and this lot have no choice due to what they have inherited. They will definitely need to develop a sense of progression, hope and positivity in time for the next election campaign, but that's a long way off. One thing he's shown up to now is that he's a great strategist who knows how to forward plan, so I trust that he knows what he is doing.

Another thing he definitely is is bright - I get why these threads charcaterise him as lacking in charisma but I really don't know why people insist that he's a bit dim when he patently isn't. I can only think he's not quite posh enough for them and they are dim enough to equate a plummy voice with a strong intellect.

I agree. I was waiting for a Churchillian speech about beaches but it was a bit of a bore fest. Don't understand why he's going on about the Tories, they're last week's chip wrapping.

Because that was the only successful policy of the previous Conservative government. From the first day they took office until 14 years later the mantra was "Labour left us ba krupt" & the disingenuous use of the "there's no money" note left.

As a strategy it worked to enable them to avoid getting the blame for the decisions they made. It became a largely unchallenged narrative that Labour were the reason for cuts to welfare, public services, the underfunding of the NHS and even local government cuts.

Labour are simply using the same tactic, but without the full support of the press are going to have a harder time pulling it off.

Starmer is blue Labour, as are almost all his cabinet, backed by Labour Together, he's never going to be inspiring or visionary and (apart from a brief period when he was seeking votes to lead the party) he hasn't hidden it.

Meet the Labour think tank guiding Keir Starmer’s path to power

Labour Together maintains a low profile in Westminster but is quietly crucial to its leader’s vision for government.

@HedgehogCabinFan "2tierStarmer and his clampdown on free speech is absolutely terrifying."

Talk to me about this clampdown on free speech.

It usually means 'Waaaaah I'm not allowed to tell people to set mosques on fire any more!"

No.

Carrot not stick.
Seriously.

The veg we can grow in this UK should be dirt cheap. Because we have so much lovely farmland we can rewild, solar or house build on it.

Have Jamie Oliver write a book "cooking with UK seasonal vegetables" ..

Then we'll have threads bewailing Starmer wanting everybody to exist on turnips and the occasional mouldy cabbage and how he's become the Strawberry Thief of the Middleclasses and they can never open their William Morris curtains without crying forever more.

ExtraOnions · 29/08/2024 17:27

There is no clampdown on Free Speech, you can say what you want, within the confines of the laws thar already exist. No new laws have been brought in.

People realising that we have laws against inciting racial hatred is no bad thing

LizzieSiddal · 29/08/2024 17:37

What is it with people who want charisma? You got that with that waste of space Johnson and it didn’t worked out well did it?

I expect the new government are trying to get their heads around the clusterfuck of what’s been left by the Tory’s before making any decisions. That seems the sensible thing to do.

It's always the same thing: money. How to keep hold of their money.

Same old story.

flymetoalphacentauri · 29/08/2024 17:44

He's a miserable bugger, taking people's ciggies off them. The only thing we have to look forward to as an escape from this crappy country is death 😂

And it's going to get worse?! Ciggies and gin please.

Prawncow · 29/08/2024 17:49

I really want boring. I don’t want shiny, soundbite, tell them what they want to hear politics. I want people who read reports all the way through, including all the notes. I want people willing to spend hours talking about the minutiae of tax law. People who will listen to experts.

I don’t need someone charismatic. I don’t want another pound shop Churchill. I just want competence.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2024 17:56

@pointythings "It usually means 'Waaaaah I'm not allowed to tell people to set mosques on fire any more"

Indeed. I always hope they might actually say that-but they never do!

Peoplearehere · 29/08/2024 18:01

I like him. I think he’s honest and realistic. People need to give him a chance. I think he can turn things around for us.

Redgreenfroggy · 29/08/2024 18:06

Was wondering how long it would take today to get a Tory bot to pop up. Getting a bit predictable now.

anotherside · 29/08/2024 18:08

It’s funny, some on the left and right both want to paint him as some radical who’s simply hiding his true nature - biding his time before making the big moves. The reality is he’s just a bland political nothing who’s so obsessed with being seen to not do the wrong thing - ie anything that be perceived as radical by the left or right - that he’ll spend 5 years doing absolutely nothing. So in that respect he’s centre right by default as he’s terrified of changing the status quo. His position on Israel/Gaza sums him up perfectly: probably disapproves of Israel’s recent moves but is so terrified of being labelled antisemitic that he’d rather be seen to be cheering them on than making any even mild criticisms.

LynetteScavo · 29/08/2024 18:12

I didn't vote for Starmer so I could be motived, I voted for him to steady the country. I bet he's feeling not too chirpy at was he's got to deal with right now.

I hate the Tories, but Sunak was a small C conservative and a relatively steady pair of hands. If Starmer isn’t going to meaningfully diverge from Tory policy I’d rather have just kept Sunak as at least he has a bit of charisma to him.

And there we have it: the British electorate are just shallow as anything and would rather have charisma, chaos and corruption than a bit of sober common sense. I despair.

What would you like to say that you're being prevented from saying?

Justcallmebebes · 29/08/2024 18:34

Labour did not win by a huge majority. They got in because they're not Tory. Hopefully, the Tories will regroup in the next 4 years and really get their act together so we only have a one term Labour government, gone before too much harm can be done
