JKR being uncharacteristically quiet

1000 replies

Jdugsgsgwyd · 17/08/2024 14:42

Anyone else noticed since the news that JKR is being sued by Imane Khelif she's been very quiet, unless I'm mistaken she's hasn't tweeted at all in about a week.

and hasn't responded at all to the legal action being taken against her. This is very unlike her, I'm thinking she's been advised by her lawyers to keep quiet. Anyone else think she might have put her foot in it this time?

This is all fair enough, but I still think JK misjudged it, there was just no need for her to wade in, many people have taken it as a dog whistle to bully Khelif when, as you say, the whole situation is painful and unfair to everyone really.

Essentially - yes it needs sorting out, but no it doesn’t need JK’s help (hinderence) in muddying the waters and making an athlete’s life a misery.

The problem is that nobody with the power to sort it out has any interest in doing so.

The IOC has had a problem with DSDs since at least Rio and a problem with trans athletes since Tokyo. Instead of sorting out the problem by introducing and enforcing fair eligibility criteria for the women's competitions, they chose to abdicate responsibility to individual governing bodies (meaning no consistency between different sports) and try to ban the media from reporting accurately on the sex of any particular athlete. (Obviously this strategy backfired somewhat, but you still have much of the media either deliberately or unintentionally misrepresenting the situation to the public.)

Without people like JK Rowling tweeting about this to their millions of followers, would the public really be aware of it?

Because it's clear that absolutely nothing will be done about it if no one is aware of it.

People on here are being ridiculous. She has a vagina and to all intents and purposes is a woman. She was born one and raised as one and believes herself to be one.

She is being persecuted for something that is outwith her control

Have a day off, will ya? He's being called out for cheating. And it's perfectly well within his control to refrain from so doing!

Two gender tests revealed XY. Those results have not been officially questioned by anyone. Nor were they appealed. Nor had anyone produced any evidence to the contrary to suggest that they are not correct.

Once again, this is men beating up women that's being sanctioned here. It is absolutely shocking that these test results have been overruled without any attempt to contradict them or clarify the situation.

We've already established in this thread that you can be XY and still be female. Of course we didn't manage to establish this until I provided evidence of XY women giving birth - then suddenly the true mark of what makes someone male became something else. Just because we're talking about boxing doesn't mean you can't shift the goalposts apparently.

No one on this forum has the information or the qualifications to say that Khelif is a man. Neither does JKR.

Pffft. I'm still saying it though. I don't need qualifications to distinguish men from women. I've always been able to do it 🙂

XY and female would be like Swyer syndrome, which doesn't fit Khelif's profile at all - give that it involves no virilisation.

"Virilisation" being your way of saying you think she looks like a man but pretending that it's sciencey rather than misogyny?

True.

Two official CAS overseen tests DO have the qualifications and information however

The person I was replying to literally asked me a question about trans people, hence my comment about dragging them in. I'm inclined to agree with you it's not important.

And once again you're showing remarkable insight into Khelif's biology for someone who knows - along with the rest of us - fuck all about it.

I'm honestly gobsmacked at the number of people on this thread incapable of distinguishing between what is a fact, established by evidence, and what is stuff they just reckon.

It’s not important with regard to IK but it’s an interesting question if you (the general ‘you’) think observing external genitalia conclusively determines sex.

And you still haven’t answered the question. You decided it was a gotcha 🤷‍♀️.

I’m not sure what the rest of your post means when it describes things you yourself have said up to this point.

Once again, god grant me the confidence of a GC mumsnetter talking about a total stranger's genitals

You’ve been doing as well freedom

No. Absolutely not. Swyer syndrome involves exceptionally low testerone levels. This is clearly not true of Khelif. It's also been verified by his coach who has spoken openly about reducing Khelif testosterone.

What about the women having to forgo their own safety and opportunities because a man wants to beat them up? Why don't you care that their lives have been made a misery? Thankfully JKR cares enough about them to stick her head above the parapet.

I think professional boxers would take issue at your description of their sport as ‘beating up’.

You would be perfectly happy for a woman to get beaten up so long as it’s another woman doing the beating, I suppose?

I mean it’s fair enough if you don’t like boxing or aggressive martial arts in general, but let’s not cloud the issue here. We’re talking sport, not domestic violence.

Women who generally don’t like to see a woman boxer punched about by an XY bodied very male built person.

So what am I to conclude here? You approve of men boxing women?

RufustheFactualReindeer · 17/08/2024 22:38

sounds like it keating

another poster is happy that a passport is qualification enough so obviously doesn’t have a problem with makes boxing females either

i do find it very strange

You may conclude that I have enough respect for the powerful elite athletes in question to not consider them some sort of feeble helpless victims.

I didn't decide it was a "gotcha", I'm just not interested in participating in some posters' insatiable urges to start trans bashing even on threads that aren't about trans people.

I don't think observing external genitalia conclusively determines sex. I don't think anyone has argued that actually. What I've actually argued is that Khelif's observable external genitalia lead to her being assigned female at birth and having an F put on her birth certificate and passport. I have also found it entertaining that the people arguing that this doesn't make her a woman are the same people who usually scoff at the idea that sex assigned at birth could be altered later in life.

You clearly misunderstand people's position then. In some, very unusual cases, usually in developing countries, sex is mis-assigned. That doesn't mean that this is commonplace (it isn't). It also doesn't undermine the fundamental point that sex is what's most important. Not appearance, not 'gender', not socialisation, not a F on the passport. Sex.

I've seen far more speculation about genitalia from those trying to argue Khelif has a vagina or a womb,

None of this is relevant, because none of us have a single clue. The only actual evidence is the chromosomal testing.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 17/08/2024 22:50

Tbf, either FreedomDog or their tag team mate, Tandora did mention genitals. Colloquial vaginas no less. And that their very presence denoted sex. But they didn’t want to answer (either of them) whether that meant the presence of male looking external genitalia denoted male sex in transwomen. Despite acknowledging trans is not connected to IK, and it was just an interesting question,
given their position, they both batted it away citing summat or other.
