FFS why don't you drive ??

So annoying to read threads on here that start with .. I don't drive .. my dp/DH does ..

Why why this is even a thing ? Does benefit of penis somehow render them more able to? Does their testosterone somehow benefit their abilities.. or is it simply something men regard as an essential in life ?

Before you all pile on .. yes there are certain disabilities that count you out . Severely visually impaired.. uncontrolled epilepsy.. but when one of my best mates who has spina bifida managed it with a hand controlled car via motability.. I think perhaps it's just not trying hard enough and happy for the man to do the driving .. even my autistic step son (severe - (special school until 21) got his license..

There is only one reason I can think not to bother - and that is because you are city dwellers with excellent public transportation .. but the rest of you .. why ? It just seems so 'weedy' .

Why are you so angry?

FrancisSeaton · 15/08/2024 19:46

I can't believe you even have to ask
It costs a fortune to learn
Not everyone has time
Not everyone can 'get' it
People have medical issues that stop them

Ohnoshebetterdont · 15/08/2024 19:46

Today I learned I’m weedy 😂

discoballdave · 15/08/2024 19:47

There are lots of disabled people who don't get full PIP who don't qualify for Motability or the adaptions they offer. HTH.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 15/08/2024 19:47

It’s fine as long as the non drivers aren’t expecting lifts all the time.

nextdoorconundrum · 15/08/2024 19:47

I'm angry because I think women are persuaded that driving isn't important.. which is true if you live in London.. or Manchester/ etc but not true anywhere else unless you happen to live in the utopian city/town of excellent public transport.

2Old2Tango · 15/08/2024 19:47

I don't think it's just a men drive/women don't thing.

Both my DDs drive. The eldest one always seems to be doing the driving. Her previous bf didn't drive at all and used her like a taxi. Current bf can drive but doesn't currently have a car so again she's doing all the driving.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 15/08/2024 19:47

Get a grip.

SummerBarbecues · 15/08/2024 19:47

But many places in the UK you don’t need to drive. It’s just opportunities isn’t it? Like more boys can play football.

Women can all learn though. Growing up in NZ I don’t know anyone who can’t.

Movinghouseatlast · 15/08/2024 19:47

And why do people say they 'don't' drive rather than 'can't '? I can't work that one out.

Anyway, I only know men who can't drive and I know 3 of them. None of them have medical reasons not to learn. Their wives drive them everywhere.

I didn't drive this year because I had a frozen shoulder which meant I physically couldn't

Plump82 · 15/08/2024 19:47

Neither my husband or I drive. We simply can't afford it. He would love to learn. I'm not interested at all, I'm a nervous person with most things in life, I don't need this added stress.

WhatdoIdoooooo · 15/08/2024 19:48

I also don’t get this either?? My sil doesn’t drive and her Dh has to do all food shopping etc, her mum didn’t either so when fil passed she had to have everyone come to take her in a car to do shopping/appointments etc on their days off/weekends.
I understand if you’re physically not able to for some reason, but if you can, wouldn’t you? I’d hate to feel so reliant on other people and I’d hate to not have the freedom to drive off somewhere when I wanted to

CranfordScones · 15/08/2024 19:48

Being able to drive (or not) isn't the measure of a man (or woman). I suspect we're past 'peak car', and younger people seem to be less concerned about driving.

existentialpain · 15/08/2024 19:48

I'm disabled, and although I have a licence, I'm no longer safe to drive.

I have no dp/dh so nothing to do with letting the man do the driving!

You sound very narrow minded.

coldcallerbaiter · 15/08/2024 19:48

I think the old ladies that have their husbands with them all the time to drive them are going to be a thing if the past soon.

What age group do you mean? I do not know any woman under 70 that does not drive or did not at some point.

neilyoungismyhero · 15/08/2024 19:49

Why are you letting this bother you so much? Some people have no confidence to drive, some just don't fancy it and others have their own reasons.. their choice...passing my test was one of the best days of my life but not everyone gives a rats arse about it.

thursdaymurderclub · 15/08/2024 19:49

my husband doesnt drive but i do?

taxguru · 15/08/2024 19:49

Not just women who can't drive. My first boyfriend couldn't drive and it's what eventually broke us as I got totally and utterly fed up with his neediness. He had no medical reason not to drive - he was just a lazy arse who couldn't be bothered to learn and didn't want to "waste" his money on lessons. He was more than happy to be ferried around by me all the time, happy to drink alcohol on nights out when I was on soft drinks because I was driving. Complete pain in the arse. And this wasn't even in a big city with good public transport - it was a Northern run down seaside town where buses stopped early and didn't run on Sundays on his route so he didn't have the excuse that there was no need to drive because of good public transport. He even started asking me to pick him up from work and take him to work in the morning at a time we weren't even living together - he'd expect me to get up early, drive to his (not on my route) and take him to work (not on my route) then go to my own workplace. The cheek of it! Of course, it was all my fault when I started saying no! Good riddance.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/08/2024 19:49

I'm not sure why it bothers you so much.

It would bother me a lot if my partner voluntarily didn't drive, because it's inconvenient to do all the driving. For medical reasons, my DH has never been allowed to drive and never will be, and if it was something he was choosing I'd be really annoyed that he was choosing to have me be the one doing all the lifts for DC etc.

But it doesn't bother me in other people's relationships.

ICDIWABH · 15/08/2024 19:49

My daughter drives, my son doesn't drive and neither do I.

nextdoorconundrum · 15/08/2024 19:50

Plump82 · 15/08/2024 19:47

Neither my husband or I drive. We simply can't afford it. He would love to learn. I'm not interested at all, I'm a nervous person with most things in life, I don't need this added stress.

Then I am not referring to you !!

I am asking about women who have a car in the household where the man drives but the woman doesn't.

Hugmorecats · 15/08/2024 19:50

I drive but really don’t enjoy it. I prefer to walk, so I do that a lot and I think it’s actually pretty good for me. I have low blood pressure and rarely get ill. It saves me money using my legs too. If I need to drive and do a longer trip I will, but the world doesn’t need more petrol fumes. Take a look at the asthma stats for city kids.

TartanJambo · 15/08/2024 19:51

This is incredibly unfair. I don't drive
I never had a parent who was able to pay for it, spent a lot of my twenties working to pay for university (again, no parental financial support) then I moved around a lot. Then I paid for ICSI. Now I'm finally in a position to learn in my mid 30s
I never expect lifts from anyone and always use public transport. It doesn't affect anyone else and is even considered environmentally friendly, so who am I hurting?

Beezknees · 15/08/2024 19:51

What's it got to do with you?

I can't drive, never bothered to learn. I don't live in London. I don't have a partner either and nobody drives me anywhere. I've raised a DS as a lone parent for 16 years and never once needed a car for anything.

I don't really care about learning to drive, a car is just another expense that I don't want.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/08/2024 19:52

Wow! Their choice. Perhaps they just don't want to?
