Should a sahm do dh ironing?

1000 replies

crocly · 15/08/2024 08:47

I have 2 small children and one due in October and I hate ironing.
I haven't ironed dh shirts in about a year since I told him I was not going to do it.
The ironing pile has grown over the past year and dh is complaining he has no clothes and he keeps asking for them to be ironed and nothings been ironed in a year.
It's all his T-shirts I don't iron my clothes and I don't iron the children's unless it's a particular item that needs it.
I am a sahm at the moment but I really don't like ironing and nor does he am I right to refuse as he wears it, he irons it or is this just part of my role as a sahm?

OP posts:

I'm a sahm and have been for years....yes I've always done his ironing.

NuffSaidSam · 15/08/2024 08:48

He wants it ironed, he irons it.

There's really no need to iron T-Shirts at all.

bakewellbride · 15/08/2024 08:48

I'm a sahm and do all the ironing

KnittingKnewbie · 15/08/2024 08:49

With two small children and pregnant?
Nope.
You're a sahm, your primary role is to mind the kids. Then as much housework as possible.
You're not actually the maid

AuntieMarys · 15/08/2024 08:49

Outsource it and let him.pay

Wtafdidido · 15/08/2024 08:50

Yes. Just do it. Or pay someone to clear the backlog then keep on top of it. It doesn’t take long. Get organised. Once the kids go to school you will have uniforms to iron anyway so may as well make it part of the routine.

Funkybananabread · 15/08/2024 08:50

I did my DHs ironing once (he didn’t ask me to) - I left it on the bed for him to put away.
He dumped it all in the bottom
of his wardrobe and I never ironed anything for him again 😂

KnittingKnewbie · 15/08/2024 08:50

@bakewellbride @Comedycook

Out of interest, how old are your children?

It sounds like OP's are preschool so always around

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/08/2024 08:50

I ironed as a SAHM. It was my one concession to being at home. In DH case it was shirts.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 15/08/2024 08:50

Everything is ironed in this house.

I feel a mess if my clothes haven’t been ironed, even bedding gets sent off to be ironed.

the trick is to iron the last load of washing, before you do anymore washing.

KnittingKnewbie · 15/08/2024 08:50

Someone mentioned ironing kid's uniform. I don't do that either!

StarryDance · 15/08/2024 08:51

He can do his own ironing. You might be a SAHM but you are not his maid. I assume you do most of the child care and other domestic drudge,

Wrennyjenwren · 15/08/2024 08:51

Could you not iron while watching telly or something?

I don't particularly like ironing either. Thankfully my DH irons his own shirts.
It's not a necessity, so really if he's that bothered about it he should just iron them himself.

MeganM3 · 15/08/2024 08:51

Not if they are very little. If you're running around after two pre school kids then I'd imagine your time is very occupied! He can do it after work?
If the kids are in school or at summer clubs then yes you could do it while they're out.

Popfan · 15/08/2024 08:52

I don't iron anything, if your DH wants ironed stuff he can do it himself.

NuffSaidSam · 15/08/2024 08:52

She could, but she doesn't want to. Maybe the DH could iron while he watches the TV?

eddiemairswife · 15/08/2024 08:52

It seems a bit churlish to refuse to iron his stuff if you are ironing any way. It's a bit like those families where everyone does their own washing.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 15/08/2024 08:52

Depends...

Children in nursery/pre school in the week? Then yes I'd probably do the ironing

At home with 2 kids full time in the week? Nope, he can do it

balzamico · 15/08/2024 08:53

I did it as a sahm. Most of it was his work shirts - for the job that brought in sufficient income for me to sah so it didn't feel unreasonable.
He didn't love all aspects of his job - same here

HotCrossBunplease · 15/08/2024 08:53

NuffSaidSam · 15/08/2024 08:48

There's really no need to iron T-Shirts at all.

100% cotton ones do need to be ironed.

I iron my husband’s on occasion because his approach is to go out wearing a creased one and I think he looks a mess. He doesn’t care and happily admits that he is too lazy to do it, but he also agrees that having ironed ones is nice. so I only do it if I happen to have the ironing board out and I’m feeling generous. I work full time though.

His work shirts go out to a laundry service.
I don’t iron my DS’s t shirts, he’s only 8 and can carry off creases better!

hulahooper2 · 15/08/2024 08:53

yes you should do it , he’s providing you with the luxury of being a sahm

scoobiedew · 15/08/2024 08:53

I know a lot of people stress about ironing but my household hasn't ironed anything in years and we have somehow survived

KnittingKnewbie · 15/08/2024 08:54

I would go away for a weekend or out for the day both Saturday and Sunday and come home to sleep.

Leave the children with DH and the ironing basket. Ask DH how he got on with the ironing.

Either it's a job that can be done with small children around, in which case he can crack on when you're out for the weekend. Or it isn't, in which case he can crack on when he comes home in the evening.

iamtheblcksheep · 15/08/2024 08:54

If I was at home all day DHs dinner would be on the table, the house would be spotless and his underpants would be ironed. I think this is a fair trade off for his financial contribution.

Mebebecat · 15/08/2024 08:54

I always did it. Sunday afternoons, it was DHs task to mind the DC while I did it.
