To take a phone call when food is ready?

Was I being unreasonable?

My dp was cooking us a nice dinner. Laid the table, home cooked food etc.

About five mins before food was ready, my 80 year old mum called me. She was firstly telling me about her doctors appointment and health issues. Then she went on to ask for help about something in her house. It took me a long time to explain to her how to fix something.

So dp had brought the food into the dining room (open plan with living room) when I sat on the sofa and spoke to mum. I told dp to just start eating.

By the time I’d finished my conversation with mum, he’d finished his dinner on his own and went off in a huff that the phone call could have waited until after the meal he’d made for us to eat together.

Of course you're being unreasonable! Unless it was an emergency, which is wasn't. This is one of my major issues with my husband and his work phone (after hours) as I really value family mealtimes.

it’s not my mum that calls though. It’s an unknown number as if she falls she activates the button on her pendant. That connects to a local service who ask via intercom if she is ok and then alert us and they will go out and assist if needed or call for medical help as they can get there in 5 minutes.

It’s just rude selfishness, mil called at 10.30pm last night to wang on about nothing! At least we weren’t at dinner. She never asks us ‘ are you busy?’ Or even how we are. She couldn’t even tell you what I do for a living.
