To think there's got to be at least a couple of MNers involved in the rioting ?

Based in the broad views seen here, I can't believe that there isn't someone who is involved either passively or actively.
If you are one of those, would you like to explain why?

Closest I've got to being in these riots is my ex (we broke up over 15 years ago) is in the one in Hull (he lives just round the corner to where they where happening)

I saw him in one of those clips-he was slinging something at the police

I can confirm that he is a racist,small minded,wife beating,alcohol fueled,woman hating,controlling Andrew tate superfan

It one too many beatings for me to leave the controlling little prat

I'd bet money on them all being like that-every single one of them

Blimey. Glad to hear that you're safely out. Flowers

I've been throwing bricks at the rozzers all day. I'm cream crackered.

😂

The riots seem to consist of differing groups of people with different agendas:
Mainly non local, bussed in thugs, who are the actual far right and are the ones doing most of the fire setting and violence,
Some fairly ordinary protestors, of varying political hues, who are worried about immigration, changing demographics and culture, infrastructure, etc, (including one woman, an excerpt of whose speech in Hull was online and didn't seem too rabid, ie might have been a Mumsnetter)
And then there are the local thieves and low level vandals, who are happily breaking shop windows and carrying off whatever they can.

It reminds me of the way that minority, extreme political party members would jump on the bandwagon at things like anti nuclear protests, hogging the front of the marches, along with the publicity getting themselves arrested and hijacking the peaceful protests and getting them a bad name.

Beryls · 05/08/2024 17:55

The people rioting are a tiny percentage of an area. I live in Hartlepool, there's around 92K people living here, it looked like around 50 people (mostly teenage kids) were rioting last week.

The percentage of people participating in the riots of any area is tiny so it's quite unlikely.

look after our own problems first. Or to ask a limit on the amount of single male immigrants arriving and being put up in hotels in small towns as well as cities

but those 'statements offer no solution - they just say 'immigrants are a problem' so that's still fanning the flames of hatred that leads to this.

We DO look after our own - we have a benefit system, homeless officers in each LA, social housing, emergency accommodation and jobs! Males come here because they are more likely to be targeted by armed forces like the Taliban and forced to fight - I would not send my daughter on the journeys any of my young male AS I work with have made - criminal exploitation, abuse and assault are common - males have a better chance of surviving and once here and settled can get their female relatives to safety - so pat statements don't actually show the whole picture

But then you read comments that the problems is male violence and the ones committing crimes are men. Only to support large numbers of them without knowing who they are coming here everyday. Because they have to leave their families behind. The same people I see the same posters with this exact comments. You can’t make it up.

The problem with finding someone like that here is that Mumsnet is left wing, on par with Reddit. You're not allowed dissenting views here, you have to toe the line.

(Unless it's about trans rights, but I guess that's because it's starting to actually affect them and their middle class families...)

This is actually possible. I went to see comments in newspapers and they were way more balanced.

Amazing and heartening to see Stand Up to Racism in Plymouth . Great to see decent and kind people taking to the streets to peacefully protest

What do you make of their signs?

Open the borders, no deportations?

Unrealistic.

Respectfully, (and also making an assumption you’re from a Western country with significant passport power) I wanted to make a point specfically regarding your suggestion about Afghans, travelling to Pakistan and taking a flight, to a safe country. This is not to start an argument on our broader views on asylum or immigration, but just for the purpose of clarifying/providing info.

I think observations like this, whilst well-meaning, come from a place of not being in a position in life where you’ve had to worry much about visas - either needing them to visit lots of places in the first place, or facing the possibility of their refusal when you do apply for them. We take it as a given, a piece of holiday bureacracy. In order to board the plane to the UK, an Afghan would firstly need a passport, issued by the same regime they’re trying to flee - and would then need a visa. One of the basic criteria for rejecting visas is the slightest suspicion that the person will not return to their country once the visa expires. Given that the UK routinely denies visas to eg: the Pakistani parents of a student in the UK who wants them to attend his graduation, the average person attempting what you suggest would fall at the first hurdle.

Edited

I accept your point on travel to the UK. However as Pakistan is considered a safe Country, wouldn't it be a better choice for all the family, rather than a death defying transport by people smugglers?

I suspect if you spoke to the people manning those signs and asked them to take an illegal immigrant into their spare bedroom until his asylum application is reviewed, you would get a resounding answer of no.

You'd be stuck in a tent in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Those paying people smugglers want to get to the West.

Why? Why is the West and in particular the UK the destination of choice? There has to be any number of safe Countries more in line with their beliefs and lifestyles.

I would have thought that was obvious. Better opportunities and better style of living. When you pay a smuggler you don't always get a choice where you go but those coming to the UK either speak English, have a family connection or just want to come to Britain as they've heard it's a great place to live.

Because we don't have ID it's easier to get lost in the black job market as well.

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 20:43

There are two reasons.

  1. People have friends or family already here. It is much easier to settle in a foreign country if you have someone you are close to who will help you.
  2. They have heard it is far easier to work illegally in the UK, which it is. Enforcement of laws around this are very lax and have been for years and we have no national identity card.
  3. They have heard from traffickers and others that the UK is a good place to settle. The recent violence might have changed that view.

They're not illegal immigrants if they're seeking asylum.

I think it's naive to think it's just men out there
Saw a video of one woman pushing a bin down the street at one.
Some woman on our absolute cesspit of a local FB group is boasting about her husband being at one, and "he's doing it for the country" or some such shit. 🙄
Edited to say I bet there is a few MNers out there involved given how big it is on here.

Plenty of women looting as well as throwing objects at the police.

Which brings us back to the initial issues that are seen by those speaking out against uncontrolled immigration. Not just idiots chanting or throwing bricks about.

We have an appalling housing stock for a great number of social tenants, We have issues accessing medical and dental help, these men may be young and healthy now, but will get older, have medical issues and add further strain.

We do have a major clash of of cultures in towns with large amounts of asylum seekers. I have witnessed & spoken directly to young women being hassled or made uncomfortable by their behaviour.

Entering the job black market would that not be another reason that resident brits would be against their arrival?

These are not unreasonable concerns, but they have not been heard or addressed. Often people have not spoken out or been branded racist for doing so. Having a Nationalistic point of view and wanting to put the needs of the British population (of all colours) first should not be seen as racist.

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 20:56

And the vast majority of people do go to much closer countries.

They are most definately illegal immigrants when they arrive. Get smuggled into a country with no documents illegally. What would you call it?
