To think that girls weren't allowed to do triple jump at school in the 90s?

Just that. I definitely remember (secondary 1990-98) being told that we couldn't do triple jump as it could damage our insides?

I remember not doing the triple jump and instead going straight to the long jump. However, damaging our insides does not ring a bell 😆

reelcat · 03/08/2024 19:54

Some of the very athletic girls in my school (normal comp) did triple jump. The rest of us didn't but didn't really think about it much at the time

ImRonBurgandy · 03/08/2024 19:54

I remember the teacher shuffling uncomfortably and mentioning 'girl parts' 😬

HighCholesterolHorror · 03/08/2024 19:54

I’m sure we only did long jump

SilverPuffin · 03/08/2024 19:55

I started (a girls) high school in 1995 and we definitely did triple jump in athletics, called it ‘hop skip and jump though’.

Girasoli · 03/08/2024 19:55

I used to be good at triple jump when we did it in PE (early 00s)

We weren't allowed to do cricket.

Elisheva · 03/08/2024 19:55

Yes! I remember being told that girls can’t do it because it might damage our pelvis.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 03/08/2024 19:55

I was born in 1982 and did triple jump at school sports day and at uni (hall sport, not high level!)

owladventure · 03/08/2024 19:55

We weren't allowed to do triple jump but I don't remember why.

Softleftpowerstance · 03/08/2024 19:56

It was called hop, skip and jump at my school in the 90s and girls were allowed to take part. We weren’t allowed to run the 1,500m though as we were told our bodies couldn’t cope with it.

Littletreefrog · 03/08/2024 19:56

We did triple jump but then we also did rugby which most other schools kept especially for the boys. I think our PE teacher was either ahead of their time or just didn't care about safety.

Berga · 03/08/2024 19:56

It was done at my girls school.

I didn't do it, because I fucking hated PE and I was a nightmare, but it was definitely done. So was pole vaulting.

TheSerenePinkOrca · 03/08/2024 19:56

1991 to 1996 and we did triple jump! I quite enjoyed it but preferred throwing javelins!

Frostycottagegarden · 03/08/2024 19:56

Absolutely in the 80s. We were told it was bad for the pelvis.

Mumofteenandtween · 03/08/2024 19:57

Dd (14) has just said that she isn’t allowed to do triple jump at school as it is bad for the hips.

TimeForTeaAndG · 03/08/2024 19:57

I don't remember ever doing triple jump, definitely did long jump. Didn't do cricket and didn't do basketball either, only netball.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/08/2024 19:58

Triple jump being 'hop skip and jump', yes?

I chose it sports day in secondary - started in '95.

We couldn't play football or rugby in gcse pe lessons until we kicked up a fuss (and then were only allowed football) but in their defence there weren't actually enough of us in the class to play either...

Same, we did it.

ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 03/08/2024 20:00

I was in secondary 93-98 and we definitely did it. I didn't do it much because I was crap at it. But the girls who were good at it would do for sports days, when we were having athletics focused PE lessons etc.

No one ever told us we could or that we shouldn't.

"In the view of the WAAA Committee in 1923, both pole vault and triple jump were deemed ‘entirely unfit for women and should not be allowed’.

By 1989, attitudes had relented, and women’s triple jump beat the pole vault to inclusion on the WAAA programme by four years."

I see it became an Olympic event for women in 1996. So maybe the rules changed mid 90s and some schools were slow to catch up?

Sorry, that should say 'chose it every sports day'

TeenScreenQueen · 03/08/2024 20:00

At secondary school in the early-mid 90s and the girls didn't do triple jump, we did do long jump (I was shit). We did do 1500m though.

Blisterly · 03/08/2024 20:00

We did triple jump and cricket. There was one running race we were told not to do as it was bad for our hearts 😂. Can’t believe we just accepted that!!

MrsTartanTeacosy · 03/08/2024 20:01

Born 1979, grammar school, definitely did triple jump. And hurdles.
