To think that girls weren't allowed to do triple jump at school in the 90s?

Just that. I definitely remember (secondary 1990-98) being told that we couldn't do triple jump as it could damage our insides?

We did triple jump - uk girls school 1990-1996

It was called hop, skip and jump at my school in the 90s and girls were allowed to take part. We weren’t allowed to run the 1,500m though as we were told our bodies couldn’t cope with it.

I ran 1500m at school in the early 80s but my PE teachers were psychos and in fact one of them was imprisoned for paedophilia about 20 years later.

ImRonBurgandy · 03/08/2024 20:03

1500m can't be any worse than the torture that was secondary school cross country surely? I remember the only time I didn't walk I accidentally qualified for the team and had to suffer a winter of cold mud.

Left school in 1986 and yes - we didn't do the hop, skip and jump just long jump

We did run though - cross country and long distance - I was more an 800m type though

Sunnydiary · 03/08/2024 20:03

Odd.

I was at secondary school 1977 - 1982 and girls were allowed to do triple jump, 1500m and 3000m.

We also played basketball and squash.

No football, cricket or rugby for girls though.

owladventure · 03/08/2024 20:04

In fairness, a quick Google does point out that it's a high impact exercise and can therefore damage pelvic floor muscles. But that applies to long jump too. And running generally.

Nightmare! - our 'cross country' was through the streets of our town - easy to dodge the teachers though and nip down a jigger for a fag!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/08/2024 20:04

We all used to run 1500m, but there wasn't any cross country running at all.

DuskandDawn · 03/08/2024 20:05

High school from 92 and we did it from the start.

I think the main reason was they just couldn’t be bothered to stand around that long and knew most people weren’t enough. My school had a lot of smokers and even the 800m could take a good five minutes.

TomatoSandwiches · 03/08/2024 20:06

I certainly did the triple jump at secondary during those years, from my memories it was hockey that fuckes you up not jumping or running ( unless you had a stick! )

Stinksmum · 03/08/2024 20:06

I did the Triple jump, it was the 400m race girls weren't allowed to do. Something to do with Hip development.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/08/2024 20:06

I did triple jump. High school in the late 80’s and early 90’s

EllenLRipley · 03/08/2024 20:08

I went to a girls school and we did triple jump - 1984-1990

Women used to be banned from running marathons.

I guess some of this is if you had older PE teachers in the 90s who'd trained in 50s/60s/70s when it was accepted as fact that women weren't physically capable of doing x, y, z sports then they would have perpetuated that.

Boston, 1967: When marathons were just for men

Forty-five years ago, Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially enter and complete the Boston Marathon. She tells the BBC about her struggle to earn respect.

All the girls were allowed except me. The one time I tried in year 7 my dyspraxic legs got tangled and I broke a leg and wrist. Dangerous sport imo!

Sarahconnor1 · 03/08/2024 20:08

I remember doing the triple jump, we weren't allowed to play football though, cos reasons 🫤

DoAClassicCamel · 03/08/2024 20:09

Our school allowed us to do it in the 1980s

Oh hockey was brutal, always played in winter, on the redgra, if you skidded you lost half the skin on your thigh and if was so cold getting a stick to the foot was agony

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/08/2024 20:09

I think the boys, for the high jump, they had to do the Fosbury Flop to avoid their 'equipment' getting entangled with THE equipment.

At least that's what the PE techer said whilst inspecting their 'equipement' for damage. He was good like that. Always made their physical well-being top priority.

Globules · 03/08/2024 20:10

We definitely did it in my girls state school in the 80s and 90s.

In PE knickers. Next to a busy road. Argh!

We also did cricket, but our head of PE was a former English national player, so no surprises there.

WorstBJever · 03/08/2024 20:11

I went to a sporty school from 1995-2002 and girls didn't do triple jump. We weren't allowed to do the 400m either. I did get absolutely beaten up playing hockey though 😆

HelenaJustina · 03/08/2024 20:12

Born 84, girls grammar school for secondary and we definitely did it, along with shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump etc

HazelWicker · 03/08/2024 20:15

My school didn't let us do it (2003 - 2010)

FuzzyPuffling · 03/08/2024 20:18

I did it at junior school in the late 60s.
