To think that girls weren't allowed to do triple jump at school in the 90s?

Just that. I definitely remember (secondary 1990-98) being told that we couldn't do triple jump as it could damage our insides?

We did triple jump but then we also did rugby which most other schools kept especially for the boys. I think our PE teacher was either ahead of their time or just didn't care about safety.

Given the streak of psychopathy running through the average PE teacher, I'd say the latter.

godmum56 · 03/08/2024 20:18

Was at secondary school mid 60's and we did hop step and jump....very badly I might add.

PerkyMintDeer · 03/08/2024 20:19

I was definitely doing it (and good at it) from (all girls) junior school in 1993 and again in senior school from 96 onwards.

But...

When I was about 7 all the kids were leapfrogging over posts on the way home from school. I joined in. My mother went hysterical told me to stop, I ignored her, carried on and she came and grabbed me, burst into tears and said,

"you must never do that or you won't be a virgin on your wedding night and your husband won't want you!!!" and shook me.

I had NO idea what she was going on about. When I finally realised years later, I was even more disturbed than I had been that day. What a thing to tell a seven year old in the nineties.

1500m can't be any worse than the torture that was secondary school cross country surely? I remember the only time I didn't walk I accidentally qualified for the team and had to suffer a winter of cold mud.

Our cross country went past the chippie so we all arrived back at school smelling of vinegar.

HarrytheHobbit · 03/08/2024 20:20

At school in the 80s. Definitely did it then. Well attempted to, I was rubbish .

It was called hop, skip and jump at my school in the 90s and girls were allowed to take part. We weren’t allowed to run the 1,500m though as we were told our bodies couldn’t cope with it.

Oh how I wish my school had this rule about the 1500m! 🤣

NewMe2024 · 03/08/2024 20:21

I think we all did triple jump and all other athletics. But otherwise girls weren’t allowed to play the ‘boys sports’ of football and cricket. We had to play the ‘girls sports’ of hockey and netball. I bloody loved hockey and netball but still resented the sexism.

Sirzy · 03/08/2024 20:21

I started high school in 1994 and we did long jump.

all we didn’t do was hockey and javelin and my year group was deemed to dangerous to do it!

toomanytonotice · 03/08/2024 20:22

We didn’t do triple jump.

presumably because it’s too technical and beyond the scope of your average PE teacher.

InSpainTheRain · 03/08/2024 20:34

I went to school in the 70s we did the triple jump then. I was pretty useless at all sports and definitely a shocker at athletics. Hasn't held me back though.

Triple jump at school in the 90s, yes.
Full push ups, no. Because they might stretch our wombs.

Wrapunzel · 03/08/2024 20:37

Year 10 in 1994, not allowed to do triple jump or 400m, and if you did 800 or 1500 you weren't allowed to do the other one HmmHmm

Allnewtometoo · 03/08/2024 20:39

We did triple jump, independent school, left 6th form in 94

leeverarch · 03/08/2024 20:40

We did triple jump at school in the 1970's.

Notsureaboutusername · 03/08/2024 20:41

In the 1970’s I remember being told girls could not do the Triple Jump as it would damage your womb!!!!!! I really was not bothered either way.

TruthorDie · 03/08/2024 20:41

Did at my school. 1990’s northern comprehensive

ItsAlrightDarling · 03/08/2024 20:42

I did triple jump. Mid 90s.

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/08/2024 20:42

This is bonkers!

I destroyed my pelvic floor, knees and hips working long hours as a hotel cleaner. I doubt the one time I did triple jump in school had much of an effect by comparison.

Scaredycat259 · 03/08/2024 20:43

I remember girls weren't allowed to throw Javelin when I was at high school early 90s, because apparently it would damage our boobs.
However we did shotput and discus!

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/08/2024 20:43

toomanytonotice · 03/08/2024 20:22

Heh heh

ShillyShallySherbet · 03/08/2024 20:45

I remember doing triple jump at school, it was really complicated. I do remember vividly going on a walking trip and someone saying girls shouldn’t wear walking boots as it’ll displace their ovaries, it’s really stuck with me but surely it can’t be true.

Jubileetime · 03/08/2024 20:46

Born in the 70's and did triple jump in secondary

powershowerforanhour · 03/08/2024 20:48

"Full push ups, no. Because they might stretch our wombs."

Yeah the full push ups make your womb fall out . Knees on the ground, fine and dandy.
I remember thinking at the time, walofs

lalaloopyhead · 03/08/2024 20:48

We definitely did triple jump, it was my best/favourite..I left school in 1989 though so they perhaps didn't know/care about our innards then....
