To think that girls weren't allowed to do triple jump at school in the 90s?

Just that. I definitely remember (secondary 1990-98) being told that we couldn't do triple jump as it could damage our insides?

I was born late 1950's and remember doing Hop Skip and Jump in the late 60's / early 70's
How strange

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 07:03

1980 ish i think we did it, i thought it was the long jump, that and hurdles and high jump and javelin, perhaps discus too not sure

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 04/08/2024 07:06

We did it in the late 1980s as well as high jump, long jump, hurdles, discuss, javelin and long-distance running

I was definitely doing it (and good at it) from (all girls) junior school in 1993 and again in senior school from 96 onwards.

But...

When I was about 7 all the kids were leapfrogging over posts on the way home from school. I joined in. My mother went hysterical told me to stop, I ignored her, carried on and she came and grabbed me, burst into tears and said,

"you must never do that or you won't be a virgin on your wedding night and your husband won't want you!!!" and shook me.

I had NO idea what she was going on about. When I finally realised years later, I was even more disturbed than I had been that day. What a thing to tell a seven year old in the nineties.

Edited

Was she right?

I was at school in the 70s and triple jump was a boys sport. I don't remember ever being given a reason.

I was born mid 60's and remember doing the "Hop, Skip and Jump" as well.

I remember being told that women couldn't do push ups, as they put too much pressure on our wombs! At my school, the girls sports were definitely viewed as being bess important that boys sports. I remember wanting to play cricket and rugby, but only being allowed to play rounders and netball.

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 08:31

my friend female played cricket but she had to go elsewhere to do this in 1977

QueenofLouisiana · 04/08/2024 08:35

I was in secondary from 87-94, we did triple jump, 1500m and cricket. No football, rugby or basketball though.

Natsku · 04/08/2024 08:51

I remember we did it in primary school (hop, skip and jump!) but can't remember if we did it in secondary school. I do remember the longest girls running race on sports day was 800m compared to the boys 1500m but we did all do the 1500m in a PE lesson one day (and I am still gutted about my result, I was doing so well, in the front pack with the fastest boys but then my shoelace came undone so I stopped to do it up and couldn't catch up with them again)

I actually did get hit with a discus. Luckily not yet thrown, but another pupil hit me with it during their spin. For some reason we were in the sports hall and it was a bit crowded in there.

That just sounds like a classful of accidents waiting to happen! I actually got hit in the face with a tennis racket once (in the days when rackets were made of wood and strung with cat gut so quite heavy things) because the girls from one entire year group were being made to practice rallying on 4 tennis courts. Ludicrous. I was allowed to sit down for 5mins then had to join in again. Turned out a piece had been chipped off my brow bone. We were tough in those days! 😊

All PE teachers, since the beginning of time, will tell about the child with a javelin stuck in their head because they weren't being careful. They probably shared the ambulance with the child who had their face smashed in by a discus, who were also not being careful. 🤣

There was an episode of BBC's 999 that showed a recreation of a school javelin accident. It went through a boy's neck and the fire brigade had to carefully saw off the lengths both sides before he could be taken to hospital IIRC 🤢

Longcommute · 04/08/2024 13:52

I did triple jump at school in the 90s. I was terrible at it 😂

yarnwitch · 04/08/2024 13:58

I did it at secondary in the 90's. From memory there weren't any sports that just girls weren't allowed to do.

TransvestitesOnParade · 04/08/2024 14:49

I mean, they used to think women's uteruses would fly out of their bodies if they went in a 'high speed' train i.e. over approx 50mph, soooooo...?

RightOnTheEdge · 04/08/2024 17:32

Hop, skip and jump/triple jump in middle school and in secondary.
We did all the athletics.
Girls weren't allowed to do rugby or football though. A teacher said they weren't insured for girls to do it 🙄

It seemed like madness to let kids loose with javelins now though 😆

WitchyBits · 04/08/2024 17:52

I competed in the long jump, triple jump, discuss, javelin and shot put and raced in the relay and 1500m every year in high school. I was born in 1979 .

I still remember that! I was always very careful at athletics as a result.

Now I'm an anaesthetist and I go down a mental rabbit hole wondering how I'd anaesthetise them for its removal.

Boredlass · 05/08/2024 17:48

I definitely did but it was hop, skip and jump

Sounreasonable · 05/08/2024 18:24

We did triple jump (1998-2005) but didn’t have to do the 1,500 meters run like the boys- we only had to do 800 meters!

Oh yeah, definitely no football or rugby for girls.

LutonBeds · 05/08/2024 18:27

I was in high school 91-96 and unfortunately had to do all the above mentioned. The only
thing my school didn’t do was the one where you twirled around with a metal ball (hammer?).

MrsClatterbuck · 05/08/2024 18:38

Girls only did the long jump at our school. This was in the seventies.

Ooo, I hadn't considered that would be a problem - could they not have a general anaesthetic? I'm not sure I'd want to be awake whilst they yanked it out!
