To think that girls weren't allowed to do triple jump at school in the 90s?

Just that. I definitely remember (secondary 1990-98) being told that we couldn't do triple jump as it could damage our insides?

It was called hop, skip and jump at my school in the 90s and girls were allowed to take part. We weren’t allowed to run the 1,500m though as we were told our bodies couldn’t cope with it.

I left secondary in 1983 and we did 1500 and also much longer cross country. What sort of mad school did you go to?

We did triple-jump at my all-girls school in the late 80s/early 90s but I could never co-ordinate my feet and brain to do it right so always got either a terrible low distance or was disqualified for not doing the moves right.

Every girl from y9 up had to do the 1500m run at least once a year. There were posters up along the corridors giving the pb for every girl in the school for each of dozens of athletic events and the House Cup was awarded on the basis of points gained as the sheets filled up. You weren't allowed to have any empty boxes so each thing has to be attempted at least once, including the 1500m

I was in high school 90 - 97 and we did triple jump. We did everything in athletics the same as the boys except they did cross country and we didn't

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 03/08/2024 21:52

We definitely did triple jump in the early to mid 90s. I dreaded it because the sand pit was used as a litter tray by local cats <boak>

BiffandChip1 · 03/08/2024 21:53

At school in the 00s and nope we weren't allowed to do it either! Or the 400m!?!!

I started (a girls) high school in 1995 and we definitely did triple jump in athletics, called it ‘hop skip and jump though’.

Us too, I was at high school late 80s, early 90s

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 03/08/2024 21:54

And we did cross-country too, along with the 1500m. I remember with horror just how many laps of the athletics track that was!

We might have been a bit progressive as girls also played cricket at my school, much to the horror of the male PE teachers.

JoanDarc · 03/08/2024 21:55

Yep, exact same here. Scottish state high school early/ mid nineties. Girls weren’t allowed to do it due to pelvis/ hip issues apparently, I was desperate to try it as good at long jump so gutted to not be allowed!

StrawberryWater · 03/08/2024 21:55

I did the triple jump. I have a photo of me doing it.

Ours was right on the edge of the sports field where people walked their dogs so we had to rake it out once a week. Grim.

It was also next to a goat pen and it stunk to high heaven.

yeesh · 03/08/2024 21:57

born 1981, we did triple jump but they wouldn’t let us play rugby

I started high school in 1994 and we also definitely did it, also recall the hop skip and a jump.

LyricalGangsta · 03/08/2024 22:12

At 5'11 I was forced into hurdles, triple jump, high jump and long jump.
We were told we were not allowed to do any vaulting in year 10 and 11 due to damage to joints which was most disappointing

miniaturepixieonacid · 03/08/2024 22:14

Triple Jump is still boys only where I teach - and Year 8 boys only, at that (the oldest year group in the year). Younger boys and all girls only do Long Jump. No idea why, I'm not in the games dept.

I think I did do a bit of Triple Jump at school as a teenager. But only a lesson, not a sports day event. Can't remember what the boys did.

HemelHan · 03/08/2024 22:21
mean girls GIF

the reasoning is giving me this vibe 😂 … we had to do everything

PoliteOtter · 03/08/2024 22:29

We did pole vault. I was crap at it but we did it. The bar came off backwards so it was really just launching yourself onto a mat.

ElizabethCage · 03/08/2024 22:34

I did triple jump at school in the 90s lol

Waitformetoarrive · 03/08/2024 22:34

Did the triple jump at my school in the early 90s.

canonlydoblue · 03/08/2024 22:35

I started secondary in 96 and definitely did triple jump. Didn't think my secondary was at all progressive...

Porridgeislife · 03/08/2024 22:39

At school in the late 90s and we did triple jump, high jump, javelin, shotput, hurdles and all running distances including cross country. Cricket, football and touch rugby were also played.

Why on earth would triple jump be bad for your pelvis but not, say, gymnastics?

Itisjustmyopinion · 03/08/2024 22:41

Was at a regular Scottish high school 92-98 and we definitely did the triple jump. Didn’t jump into sand though just jumped and landed on the pitch

The only thing we got to opt out of was the proper sized hurdles but everyone still had to do baby hurdles

Our school wasn’t particularly sporty so it was just the normal curriculum to do all track and field stuff.

I definitely would have remembered them saying something about girls not doing it because of their “insides” as my stubborn teen self would have probably insisted on doing it to make a point 😂

ShowOfHands · 03/08/2024 22:46

High school 92-97 and we did triple jump.

No cricket or rugby though because misogyny.

Wow, that's amazing. I was just wondering today how on earth someone would start off getting into pole vaulting. So cool but so niche. And I imagine you must have to have very specific, careful training to be able to coach young people in it. Not something your average PE teacher could teach, I'm sure.

Didimum · 03/08/2024 22:50

How strange. I went through secondary school in the 90s and yes the girls all did triple jump.

Can you ask why, when term starts again?!
