These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

It's Britain. It's hot. People riot. They do it every time. They'll stop when the rain comes.

I haven’t seen any riots online. There’s not been any tyre burning or looting. I’ve seen demonstrations. But certainly no riots. In all of the footage I’ve seen the police weren’t even in riot gear.

The media coverage of disorder and violence, including attacks on the police, fire setting and throwing objects has been on every channel, in every paper and all over SM.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/08/2024 17:55

Yep pepper spray, mastering, tear gas-full works I say- who goes to 'protests' with a crate of beer and indulges in a bit of looting whilst they are at it- Britain is full of yobs sadly - luckily they are in the minority but enough of them to cause mayhem

I would have any arrests for violence or abusing police an automatic disqualifier when it comes to social housing allocation too

The Tories couldn't get a functioning immigration system together in 14 years so I'm willing to give Labour more than 4 weeks to come up with a plan. Rwanda was a ridiculous waste of money and was only even going to deal with a tiny percentage of migrants. It was supposed to act as a deterrent but if a migrant is willing to get on an overcrowded, collapsible dinghy then I imagine the tiny chance of being put on a flight to Rwanda is a chance they'd be willing to take.

As someone with an Aus connection and UK one I think the decision is madness and the trajectory will diverge between the two countries over the next five years

Use a deterrent and you’ll have a calmer country and citizens who never vote it out, like Aus

Aus is centre left now and has does this. Smash the gangs is trying to clean up all trafficking. Disorder as a result will cost

There is a misconception, deliberate or not I’m not sure, that people with concerns about immigration want ‘foreigners’ kicking out. That’s not the case. We want a pause on other migrants coming in whilst we sort out this shit show. That pause could last years/decades, but it’s like we just don’t have the infrastructure in place to accommodate any of us already in the UK. It’s not just down to the previous governments. Houses need building, the NHS needs a huge overhaul - it’s no longer fit for purpose for the numbers it needs to service. It’s like we’re on a sinking ship, and instead of trying to stabilise the ship and get us floating again, we’re getting more people thrown on the ship.

We want a pause on other migrants coming in whilst we sort out this shit show.

Suella Braverman's Home Office issued 1.2 million visas in FY 2022-2023, the majority of them for workers. Unemployment didn't jump, so those people were apparently all needed to keep the economy going. By all means get the government to stop issuing those visas, but expect employers across the entire range of sectors to complain that they can't find people. Care home beds need changing, the fruit needs picking, the trucks need driving.

I have seen it suggested (heaven forfend) that one or two people might have a specific problem with the culture, religion, or other demographic attributes of many recent immigrants. It's ironic that those differences would be far less if it was easier to bring in people who are less culturally, religiously, or otherwise visibly different from White British people from, say, the EU. But some people voted to "Take our country back", so that's out. Be careful what you wish for, as they say.

Daisymay2 · 03/08/2024 17:58

Reporter on Today programme this morning said that he recognised some of the rioters from previous unrest in other parts of the country. Presume Police do too. It seems very orchestrated .

Protest in city near here was stuck between the pop up beach in the Market Square , Clark’s shoe shop , people sitting outside a cafe drinking coffee and a counter peace protest !! The knuckledraggers must have felt well ‘ard !! Hopefully they fucked off back to Spoons !! They weren’t big in number !! Twats !!

Actually, there also appears to be a link between civil disturbance and boom periods when there are higher numbers of male adolescents. There was a high birth rate about 16 years ago. so that might fit?

Bouledeneige · 03/08/2024 18:02

To be fair there has been a trend of rioting in Britain in the summer over the years - with various motivations - racism, attacking police and businesses, vandalism, looting. There are people who want to stir up mischief inciting people with vague or coded language.

Any crime apparently linked, however tenuously, to ethnic minorities is used to promote racist and anti refugee prejudices. Sadly, it's those people who are at the bottom of the pile with least stake in society who are most likely to be manipulated into this action. Actions that damage their own communities and put lives - including the police's - at risk.

The current riots and violence seem to be mostly perpetrated by white males who feel disadvantaged and alienated in society. And we do, politically, need to address this alienation and hopelessness. But in reality they are being manipulated into blaming ethnic minorities when really it's growing inequalities that is responsible.

Happily the anti-nazis and anti-racists are out in force today in many cities across the country.

The UK remains 83 percent white - we are not being overrun by foreigners. The problem is that wealth and power is being controlled by the few. And that means many people have very little hope of sharing in prosperity or having a valued role in society.

I was being flippant about getting foreigners out but watching the live feeds from Sunderland last night, it was very clear that those 'protesting' absolutely wanted foreigners out (especially those of colour). Of course immigration is a much more nuanced subject than that however every economic study that I've read in the last 10 years agree that migrants make a positive benefit to our economy. The problem is that governments (and I agree it's successive governments) haven't invested that tax revenue back into local economies. We then don't have the infrastructure to support the local population, especially areas where the population has significantly increased. That's not the fault of migrants, it's national government.

@GoodieMcTwoshoes well in my 16 years here I have only seen improvements. You have a fair voting system and decent but not perfect social security systems. It's not a perfect country but where is. What is it you want that's gone!

@mothsandgoths

respect, decency, sense of community, people looking out for each other, safety on the streets. The way Britain used to be.

I'm absolutely ashamed of how some of my neighbours behaved last night. No one I know (to my knowledge) was involved in the riots but seeing my city being the headline story on all newspapers and the lead story on BBC news is horrifying.

OP, I hope Hull fairs better than we did last night but I've been amazed at how the community has pulled together with the vast majority of people condemning the rioters behaviour.

@PickAChew I hope your DN is ok. A nurse that I know had to be escorted home last night when she finished her shift.

You're contradicting yourself. You're saying that your neighbours were involved in the riots but then saying that no one you know was involved. You must know who your neighbours are if you know they were involved.

ArmFromUll · 03/08/2024 18:05

I'm proud of Hull. I don't think there were many actual Hull people in the protest riot crowd. I like to think most Hull people wouldn't dream of joining in.

whynotwhatknot · 03/08/2024 18:07

tese are riots not protests

why the hell woul you take childdren to that

MouseofCommons · 03/08/2024 18:07

Yanbu.
I'm half expecting the idiots in my town to kick off too.

Scarflife · 03/08/2024 18:07

I was meant to go into Manchester today for a hobby group meeting, but for various reasons I couldn’t be bothered. It wasn’t until later I checked social media and saw there were these EDL type protests arranged all up and down the country including Manchester. It’s frightening because I could quite easily have ended up in the thick of it.

I assume many of these people came by train since they’re half drunk or planning to get drunk, I take the train too from my town which is half an hour from Manchester.

To add, I was wearing a headscarf today. I’m not Muslim but I wear it sometimes not as a hijab but as a fashion accessory. I have been mistaken for Muslim in the past which has led to “taliban” and the P word being screamed at me on occasion.
I was in a local shop today and the staff member was so rude and hostile to me I actually started wondering later on if it was related to my headscarf?

It’s sad that I’m now thinking twice about wearing headscarves. I can’t imagine how actual Muslim women are feeling .

Are they needed to keep the economy going though? Or are they needed to make sure wages are suppressed and companies don't need to pay any more than they want to?
I suspect that it actually falls somewhere between the two but there is no doubt in my mind that wages are lower in my industry (tech) because of a combination of outsourcing overseas and imported labour.

Have you seen the videos of the bus incidents? My heart sunk at how terrified the passengers looked. My nephew lives off Chester Road and said there were swarms of them stomping up the place!

I haven't seen that no. I saw a post earlier about a women who runs a local business that was throwing bins at police. Apparently she's now been named all over X complete with video footage.

SlashBeef · 03/08/2024 18:09

I'd be mortified so yanbu. There's nothing like that happen near us and I feel very grateful to not have to live in places like that, as a person of colour. I was born in England, as were my parents but I think I still count as a foreigner from what I've seen of the live streamed riots.

I just wish they wouldn’t drink. We do need to take Britain back, but we’ll never get it back with these men behind the protests. Their behaviour makes a mockery out of a very real problem!

Take Britain back from what?

BMW6 · 03/08/2024 18:12

They are in it for the fight and the looting. They couldn't give a teeny tiny shit about any "issues".
They are just using it as an excuse to fight the police and do some robbing on the sly.

Frankly I wish that the Police could just shoot all the fuckers dead. Would enhance the gene pool terrifically and I wouldn't shed a single tear for the loss of a single one.

If any of them are your DH or son I'm sorry for you, but they are a waste of space.

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/08/2024 18:12

Not the brightest sparks are they? Some people just love a barney. They’ll be people there that don’t even know what they’re supposed to be rioting about.
