To be embarrassed to be from Hull right now?

These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

Balls to stand up? They back up as soon as police move. They only managed to set things on fire because the police weren't there. They have no balls

YABU to be embarrassed from there. Get a grip. Loads of us are in the same position and anyone with any sense doesn't judge anyone just because of where they're from. More fool you to be personally bothered by the Sunderland comment.

I'm absolutely ashamed of how some of my neighbours behaved last night. No one I know (to my knowledge) was involved in the riots but seeing my city being the headline story on all newspapers and the lead story on BBC news is horrifying.

OP, I hope Hull fairs better than we did last night but I've been amazed at how the community has pulled together with the vast majority of people condemning the rioters behaviour.

@PickAChew I hope your DN is ok. A nurse that I know had to be escorted home last night when she finished her shift.

I am sad for Hull. I wouldn't be embarrassed, just bloody livid that these thugs, many from elsewhere, are destroying my city.

Purplebunnie · 03/08/2024 17:12

Poor dog I hope he wasn't poisoned by tasting that yob

I am very angry after seeing the fire. I feel close to tears (im an angry cryer) I cant believe it. They attacked someone in a car and all I heard was something about foreigners. I have Polish friends who I am now increasingly worried about

I just wish they wouldn’t drink. We do need to take Britain back, but we’ll never get it back with these men behind the protests. Their behaviour makes a mockery out of a very real problem!

We do need to take Britain back

I don't even know what that means - take it back from where, from whom, how? It's just a soundbite like MAGA.

I hope she gets home safe. We were going to go into town today but changed our mind luckily

Most of the shops have shut early, now, so he's taken refuge at a friend's house, thankfully.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 03/08/2024 17:17

There were some videos circulating earlier online that two people in the Stoke protests had been stabbed, can’t find any news reports on it though. Things seem to be getting well out of hand now, will probably get worse as the night goes on.

From what do we "need to take Britain back"?

Livelovebehappy · 03/08/2024 17:18

There are very valid concerns about immigration, which need to be addressed, and it angers me that these rioters are using these concerns as justification for their violence. How do they think that what they’re doing is going to lead to serious discussion about the issue? Just any excuse for a brawl.

What "cause"?

VimtoVimto · 03/08/2024 17:20

I thought we took Britain back in 2016?

mothsandgoths · 03/08/2024 17:22

Where are we taking Britain back from?

I've lived in Britain for 16 years and I certainly haven't taken it anywhere

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 03/08/2024 17:25

I don't think there's any way back @IntoTheMild . The way it is, is the way it's going to be now, and worse. None of the governments we're getting are doing anything about it, quite the opposite.

I thought we took Britain back in 2016?

People thought we were, but none of the governments have acted as they hoped.

About what?

Sorry but it just isn't what it was, at least in certain places. It's very different. We might as well be not in the UK anymore. That's how it appears.

I haven’t seen any riots online. There’s not been any tyre burning or looting. I’ve seen demonstrations. But certainly no riots. In all of the footage I’ve seen the police weren’t even in riot gear.

Have you not been watching the news?

Here is some footage including looting and police in riot gear: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cnl0lkrxgvxo

The 'protesters' set fire to a citizens advice bureau. Not sure how anyone can claim that qualifies as a peaceful demonstration.

Rioters and a car on fire

Eight arrested and building burned during Sunderland unrest

Three officers were injured after facing "serious and sustained levels of violence", Northumbria Police said.

Not just Hull. There's a large protest in my naice seaside town this afternoon. Gutted.

There’s one in my adopted City, too.
A football match and a Protest.
What could go wrong?⚠️🙁

About what?

The seemingly unlimited amount of illegal immigration, for instance. All the governments pay lip service to doing something to limit it, then do the opposite.

FrancisSeaton · 03/08/2024 17:30

All riots are wrong
Protest if you want but rioting and looting is always wrong

mothsandgoths · 03/08/2024 17:30

@GoodieMcTwoshoes well in my 16 years here I have only seen improvements. You have a fair voting system and decent but not perfect social security systems. It's not a perfect country but where is. What is it you want that's gone!

You do realise that asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants until they fail to leave if their applications are refused after they've been processed?

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 03/08/2024 17:31

We have national outbreaks of riots sometimes. It's happened a few times. Wrong'uns gunna wrong. I hope they face action because usually the ones actually being violent probably either have prior convictions for some other crimes, or will go on to have them.

Demonhunter · 03/08/2024 17:32

I'm from Sunderland and everyone not at last nights riots is seething about what happened. We've been saying the same, any rational message anyone hoped to portray is long gone and everyone just thinks they're arseholes. The destruction to shop doors and windows, the Citizens Advice Bureau being fire bombed, attacking taxis, stopping and hijacking buses while terrified people tried to huddle and hide, cars overturned and set on fire... just diabolical. I live not far from the main police station and the fire station and the sirens were none stop all night. The helicopters out all night, the lot. Just surreal.

You are joking right? You seriously think the UK is a better place to live than it was 16 years ago? Our infrastructure is on its knees. Most public services are far far worse than they’ve ever been.
