These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

From what do we "need to take Britain back"?

British Christian men I guess? Confused

theDudesmummy · 03/08/2024 17:36

"Take Britain back" where?

mothsandgoths · 03/08/2024 17:36

@and the cost to clear up these riots will help that will it

You do realise that asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants until they fail to leave if their applications are refused after they've been processed?

They could come here by legal routes rather than illegally. They used to have to make applications but now they just take advantage of us just letting them in.

And we all know that in the seemingly rare event a claim fails, a lot of them just 'disappear' and carry on living here as they are.

But it's not just 'asylum seekers'- it's all of the different forms of immigration. Supposedly there were going to be limits on who was able to come, but that seems to have gone out the window.

But anyway. I just empathise with people that feel that way, seeing their cities stop feeling like home etc. I try not to feel that way myself.

For one thing, there's no point.

What is this "cause"? What, specifically — in terms of laws or policies that the government could adopt — do you want to happen?

We do need to take Britain back

I don't think there's any way back @IntoTheMild . The way it is, is the way it's going to be now, and worse. None of the governments we're getting are doing anything about it, quite the opposite.

I thought we took Britain back in 2016?

People thought we were, but none of the governments have acted as they hoped.

Genuine question but what do you want any UK government to do? The world is more global now than it has ever been so I guess we either embrace it and accept that means accepting a level of migration that's necessary (whilst hoping Labour sort out the shit show left by the last lot and come up with a better plan than Rwanda).

Alternatively we can cut ourself off and kick all of the 'foreigners' out. Problem with that is we screw up our economy; we don't have enough working age adults to fund vital services or pay enough taxes, we can't even grow/manufacture all the food we need. Any decent trade deal signed will be contingent on allowing migration.

bostonchamps · 03/08/2024 17:37

@ilovesooty I generally find that people that spout shit like that don't actually have any understanding of how the process works, who is here legally/illegally, actual immigration statistics etc

It's just dog whistle media being parroted.

Many citizens are ashamed of the community around them at the minute.

Tough thugs….except the dog bitten Hartlepool thug sobbed through his court appearance. Sobered up clearly.
A gay man too, I'm sure he knows what prejudice feels like too.
Drunken idiot.

I’m in California.
I saw that “dog bitten Hartlepool thug” jackass taunt the police and their dog and I heard his big sissy yelp when the dog grabbed a mouthful of his pants.
He was up there yelling right in their faces.
I’m finding it quite humorous to hear he sobbed through his court appearance.
It’s always the tough ones. lol

Do tell me about the legal routes open to them.

You are joking right? You seriously think the UK is a better place to live than it was 16 years ago? Our infrastructure is on its knees. Most public services are far far worse than they’ve ever been.

Possibly something to do with the Tories having their hands wedged in the till, and going 'oh look, there's a badger, I mean an immigrant'.

Anniegetyourgun · 03/08/2024 17:40

Well I'm disgusted about all the illegal immigrants being allowed to just smash buildings and set police cars on fire and throw bricks at the police and... wait, what, who's doing that? Oh - I'm confused now. Can't we throw those people out? They're the ones making a mess.

Thefaceofboe · 03/08/2024 17:40

My brother was advised to wear plain clothes on his way to work today, not his police uniform like normal for his safety. Scary when they are the people we expect help from when bad things happen. God forbid we need the police this week as they will be too busy fending off those brain dead ‘protestors’

Demonhunter · 03/08/2024 17:41

I feel sad and angered that although they are saying about illegal immigrants, they are indiscriminate about who they are targeting.

I've been talking with an old friend from uni today, she's a beautiful, gentle soul and Muslim. Luckily she isn't in the area now but she is still feeling fearful about what's happening. Her husband and her have very good jobs in which they do help people, do lots of community work, have lived here for many years now, yet because they're Muslim, they would be targeted by these people.

I'm from Sunderland and everyone not at last nights riots is seething about what happened. We've been saying the same, any rational message anyone hoped to portray is long gone and everyone just thinks they're arseholes. The destruction to shop doors and windows, the Citizens Advice Bureau being fire bombed, attacking taxis, stopping and hijacking buses while terrified people tried to huddle and hide, cars overturned and set on fire... just diabolical. I live not far from the main police station and the fire station and the sirens were none stop all night. The helicopters out all night, the lot. Just surreal.

@Demonhunter I imagine it was very noisy round your way last night. I'm just outside of the city centre but could hear the police helicopter till gone 1 this morning.

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 03/08/2024 17:46

two muslim ladies were assaulted and had their hijabs ripped from them this week locally to me and for what? for daring to be brown and not christian? makes me sick that weve got gangs of marauding pissed up men banging on about save our country and protect our women and kids when its THEM that we need protecting from! its them that beat their partners when england lose the football!

There is a misconception, deliberate or not I’m not sure, that people with concerns about immigration want ‘foreigners’ kicking out. That’s not the case. We want a pause on other migrants coming in whilst we sort out this shit show. That pause could last years/decades, but it’s like we just don’t have the infrastructure in place to accommodate any of us already in the UK. It’s not just down to the previous governments. Houses need building, the NHS needs a huge overhaul - it’s no longer fit for purpose for the numbers it needs to service. It’s like we’re on a sinking ship, and instead of trying to stabilise the ship and get us floating again, we’re getting more people thrown on the ship.

Have you seen the videos of the bus incidents? My heart sunk at how terrified the passengers looked. My nephew lives off Chester Road and said there were swarms of them stomping up the place!

Merro · 03/08/2024 17:50

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 03/08/2024 17:31

We have national outbreaks of riots sometimes. It's happened a few times. Wrong'uns gunna wrong. I hope they face action because usually the ones actually being violent probably either have prior convictions for some other crimes, or will go on to have them.

Yes this. It seems more common in very hot weather.
They seem like the type who would be football hooligans.

This just won’t work. Smashing up gangs? They’ll just be replaced be more gangs. There’ll always be someone in the shadows waiting to step in where there’s a gap. They’ve doing that with Colombian and Mexican drug barons, and despot leaders. Always someone waiting to step up.

noctilucentcloud · 03/08/2024 17:51

There hasn't been one in my home city (yet?) but I can see what you mean OP. I am proud of where I'm from and would feel sad and embaressed to think a minorities actions are what some people would associate with the place. And horrified for those who felt unwelcome or were targeted. My city is better than that.

But the way I think about it is, look at how many people there are involved in these riots compared to the number in the city (and country). And not all the rioters will be local. It's a very small minority rioting, the majority (like you say) are sickened. I think you see more of the character of the place with how it reacts after.

I hope Hull doesn't fare too badly tonight and people (including the police) stay safe.

When I heard the initial statement I thought it madness which would lead to disorder

The Tories couldn't get a functioning immigration system together in 14 years so I'm willing to give Labour more than 4 weeks to come up with a plan. Rwanda was a ridiculous waste of money and was only even going to deal with a tiny percentage of migrants. It was supposed to act as a deterrent but if a migrant is willing to get on an overcrowded, collapsible dinghy then I imagine the tiny chance of being put on a flight to Rwanda is a chance they'd be willing to take.
