Michael Jackson

Why has Michael Jackson not been cancelled?

I don’t understand why a musical has been made out of his music, and why his music is played at school discos and is still everywhere.

After I watched the documentary where the men described how he raped them, I won’t listen to his music at all, in fact, I feel a sense of disgust when it is played publicly.

I don’t understand why we seem to have cancelled everyone else except him. Is it because he died before he was officially found guilty?

You can separate the individual from their work. As I have said often, Caravaggio was a murderer but his work is still displayed all over the world and is highly regarded.

MonsteraMama · 03/08/2024 12:16

Bit late to cancel him when he's been dead 15 years. I mean if you want to crack out a Ouija board and cancel his ghost you have at it.

cupcaske123 · 03/08/2024 12:18

I'm wondering how you would go about cancelling him. He's one of the most successful musical artists of all time.

Onehotday · 03/08/2024 12:19

Because he's innocent.

Hairyfairy01 · 03/08/2024 12:21

Totally agree with you OP. If I hear his music on the radio I turn it off. I have no idea how a grown man who admitted to sharing a bed with young boys not related to him is still being celebrated and treated like a hero by some. Was amazed when this musical came out. You couldn't pay me to watch it.

Same

Why should he be canceled when he was found innocent in court? I think it will be incredibly dangerous if we get to the point where we assume things are true because we've read them in the paper or seen them on tv.

Ah so only if they’re talented they don’t get cancelled. Gary Glitter should have written better songs

Same

I remember in the 90s we all knew then and couldn’t understand why people were still listening to him.

Yogayogayoga · 03/08/2024 12:28

It seems the greater the talent, the greater the ability to gloss over the terrible deeds.

I wonder this about Brad Pitt. Court records say he struck one of his children, poured beer over them and Angelina Jolie while they huddled under a blanket and was basically a drunk, abusive arsehole throughout the flight. Yet his career remains unscathed.

I distrust people who want others cancelled. It's bullying and nasty.

At least one of his accusers admitted he lied so he could extract money. Many others who were there, including a well known boy actor, says Jackson never did anything.

I distrust accussors who end up being "compensated".

Because he's innocent.

Would you have let your dc go for a sleepover at his house?

soupfiend · 03/08/2024 12:35

Was Kevin Spacey convicted? I cant remember, I suppose if not that is the comparison, someone that was accused but never convicted and his career is virtually over and 'cancelled' (if that is the term people use these days)

But the same hasnt happened to Michael Jackson.

The other comparisons arent quite the same because of the conviction, so Glitter, Harris etc

Simply not true.

RoseUnder · 03/08/2024 12:36

It’s a good question OP with a complex answer regarding societies response (not individuals) and I think it is absolutely about his talent and quality of music.

Michael Jackson made some of the best music in human history. Certainly twentieth century. Genuis level. Kids hear it and love it - and they’re too young to be told why he was such a terrible person and about his victims.

What do we do? Many other artists, writers, musicians whose work we adore and celebrate will have been abhorrent people and done similar deeds.

It’s ultimately an ethical and human question about whether humans can enjoy art distinct from the person who made it.

In MJ’s case I wouldn’t give money to his estate (eg by paying for his music) but I don’t stop my children listening to it - I’ve tried but they ask hard questions that they’re too young to hear the answers for.

Gary Glitter
Rolf Harris
Huw Edwards
Jimmy Saville
R Kelly
Eric Gill (niche!)

70’s/ 80’s toptp is pretty much unbroadcastable.

They were all found guilty though, even Saville was found guilty after his death.
