Michael Jackson

Why has Michael Jackson not been cancelled?

I don’t understand why a musical has been made out of his music, and why his music is played at school discos and is still everywhere.

After I watched the documentary where the men described how he raped them, I won’t listen to his music at all, in fact, I feel a sense of disgust when it is played publicly.

I don’t understand why we seem to have cancelled everyone else except him. Is it because he died before he was officially found guilty?

Because mj fans are incredibly obsessive about him and his mediocre music.

They were all found guilty though, even Saville was found guilty after his death.

Gill wasn’t. Huw was found guilty of receiving WhatsApp’s and the BBC have removed Dr Who’s with him in. It’s proven that MJ paid off young boys who had stayed over unaccompanied. Does anyone really think he didn’t molest them?
I don’t have strong feelings about ‘cancelling’ but OP is right to question why MJ hasn’t been.

Abouttthat · 03/08/2024 13:06

Square One was an interesting documentary to question alot of the claims made.

MrsSlocombesCat · 03/08/2024 13:06

I do think many fans are in denial. I myself didn't believe it at first but the documentary featuring the two men convinced me 'beyond reasonable doubt'. One of my sons is still in denial, he's been an MJ fan since before he started school so almost 40 years. We agreed to disagree! Having said that it's really difficult to give up something that was a major part of your own life. For me it's Gary Glitter, I know he's a wrong'un but I loved the music, still do, it's more the Glitter Band sound than the vocals. It seems sad that the band have had part of their careers cancelled because of GG, so I still listen to the music when I am on my own. It makes me wonder about Huw Edwards because he hosted a few Royal events, does that mean they will be airbrushed out of history or will someone edit to remove him? It's shocking that there are so many nefarious men in show business, is it a reflection of men in general percentage wise or do those types gravitate towards the industry?

randoname · 03/08/2024 13:08

That Bashir interview 🥺
Yes, Spacey, extraordinary that he’s cancelled.

LakelandDreams · 03/08/2024 13:08

Because he was never convicted, there is doubt about his guilt (unlike Saville) and he's dead. HTH.

Sunshineafterthehail · 03/08/2024 13:08

The credibility of the accusations wasn't helped by a dm taking a huge cheque....

Hellskitchen24 · 03/08/2024 13:12

Because he was never proven guilty of anything?

The first young lad who “accused” him of things was lying, fabricated by his father. His father later took his own life I believe.

I think Jackson was incredibly naive with a lot his actions, but I don’t think he had it in him to do what he was accused of. My opinion is irrelevant anyway, as nothing was proven either way. He’s managed to raise three articulate kids that clearly doted on him.

His music is massively important to me and millions of others. He’s one of the greatest music artists who ever lived.

It's firstly the nature of abuse, it's surrounded in shame and secrecy. Secondly, there are paedophiles and paedophile rings going back a long time, protected by the upper echelons.

Thirdly, women especially young girls were treated as disposable. People at the BBC witnessed top Radio 1 DJs and other personalities taking advantage of their female fans and saw it as a perk of the job.

Fourth, t's the untouchable nature of being a big star, people don't say no to them. Look at the way Russell Brand got assistants to scout out women for him to have sex with.

Saville was so big, he was ensconced in high society. He was friends with the PM and the royal family. Allegations were made against him at the time but they were ignored because of his status. He was untouchable.

Finally, entertainment is notoriously difficult to break into and very competitive. People don't want to whistle blow in case they never work in the industry again.

I started a thread about Michael Jackson a few months ago. If you search 'Do you think Michael Jackson was innocent or guilty' you should find it.

Mirabai · 03/08/2024 13:19

It annoys me too OP.

Sony paid 3/4 billion $ for his back catalogue in 2016. His legacy is simply too lucrative to too many powerful people/businesses.

Sorry, it's actually 'Do you think Michael Jackson was guilty?'

C1N1C · 03/08/2024 13:21

How is he benefiting from this though? Even if he had been responsible for genocide (like Hitler), you're not supporting him by buying or listening to his stuff (or in Hitler's case, paintings).

The quality of his music is indisputable. Sure, buying it when he was alive would have been supporting an (alleged) p'phile, but now, you're just supporting the industry.

Icepearl · 03/08/2024 13:22

Michael Jackson was found innocent by a court

Jordy Chandler was not lying. Although he did not want to testify against MJ in a trial nonetheless. He and his father brought a later case against MJ who had been trying to descredit him in the media against the terms of their settlement, in which JC upheld the fact that he had been abused.

If you enjoy the music of a paedophile that’s fine but at least be honest with yourself about it.

Ponoka7 · 03/08/2024 13:26

He's dead, so isn't earning money from his music. I don't believe in cancelling. As said we should leave the pictures depicting slavery in the art galleries etc. We'd have to rename roads, buildings and then we've got probmatic half way issues like the whole of Port Sunlight etc.
I'm a bit more hmm over the likes of Rooney getting broadcasting/commentator jobs.

C4tintherug · 03/08/2024 13:26

Personally I believe his victims. How many women retract their SA statements due to outside pressures? I’m sure there must be something that like going on here.

I am aware that he would have had the best lawyers that money can buy. Bit like some other celebrities- they are untouchable- until they aren’t any more.

I generally hate cancel culture and am a big defender of free speech- JK is a hero! - but we are discussing supporting the work of a child rapist. I just can’t listen to his music without thinking of the men in that documentary.

Sitdownrosa · 03/08/2024 13:28

I don't get it either. Some people are just thick though, and think that their enjoyment of some music is more important than that person abusing children.

sanogo · 03/08/2024 13:28

He was never found guilty of anything

I've always found it very interesting how the guys in the documentary decided to speak after he had died and couldn't defend himself

Must have been a great pay day for them

x2boys · 03/08/2024 13:30

I was never a fan of his music and having watched leaving Never land I find it hard to beleive he was innocent
However many people around the world bekeive he was a musical genius so it would be difficult to cancel him.

Didimum · 03/08/2024 13:30

Yes, I believe it’s 1) because he was never convicted and 2) because he has the most dedicated super fans of any celebrity in the world.
