Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

Good.

In any other context a biological male hitting a woman in the face, leaving her bloodied and on her knees, would be called assault. And that's what this actually is.

I don't care how he feels about himself, how he's been raised or how he identifies. He's biologically male and has all the strength advantages that come with that.

That he willingly put himself in the ring with a woman and "boxed" with her (in inverted commas because "boxing" indicates some element of fair sport, which this absolutely wasn't) says everything you need to know about his male entitlement.

I stand with Angela Carini.

No! Not enough until the madness and unfairness stops.

Quite. How many times do women get told to shut up if they say something men disagree with?

fazak · 01/08/2024 16:56

DNA is what matters, but only insofar as DNA determines which developmental pathway your body takes during development and puberty. Usually this means that XX = female and XY = male.

But some DSDs can produce XY people who have developed mostly as females, if they have a Y chromosome but faulty ‘male pathway’ genes.

Whether Khelif should be fighting in the women’s category has to depend on whether she has significant and dangerous advantages as a result of her DSD, not based on her chromosomes alone. If she does, then sad as it is for her, she just can’t be allowed to fight. Clearly Carini feels it does, and who am I to argue with her.

BlueLimeRun · 01/08/2024 16:56

They are a cheat. Quoted as saying don’t care, I just want to win. It’s despicable.

OlympicWomen · 01/08/2024 16:57

Khelif has raised testosterone, according to reports.

Nope! More posts, more threads, more sunlight! Women won't wheesht!

No, we women must only be permitted one thread in which to discuss our shrill views, preferably hidden away on The Naughty Step.

How on Earth can people ignore us if we keep speaking out all over the place?!

There really aren’t enough posts.

it’s disgraceful and wrong. People should voice their outrage

a 2.5 year old could tell you imane khelif is a man…

Nope. Chromosomes are enough. The IBA felt he could not fairly compete in women's sport and that's much more important than what he thinks.

WarriorN · 01/08/2024 16:58

YANBU and it's been that way for at least an hour

Exactly she doesn’t want get punched by another XY … and lose.

I compete at a sport. If I - a 40-something woman - put myself in the children's category, is that OK? Because I just want to win.

The lad my DH helped medivac out of a war zone minus his penis and testicals (oh and leg) is still a man.
My mum who has had a hysterectomy is still a woman.

It is whether a body is the type supposed to produce small, mobile gametes (sperm) or the type supposed to produce large immobile gametes (eggs) that matter not whether these systems work fully, partially or not at all.

OlympicWomen · 01/08/2024 16:59

"enough posts" why should we be silent over a woman being treated like this?!

TheKeatingFive · 01/08/2024 16:59

OlympicWomen · 01/08/2024 16:57

Khelif has raised testosterone, according to reports.

That isn't accurate. They'll have perfectly normal testosterone levels for a man.

Usercyzabc · 01/08/2024 16:59

So a women is punched in the face by a man in a woman’s sporting event, (I won’t get into my opinion on boxing as it’s irrelevant) said woman quits as the men are making the woman’s event dangerous, so rather than remove the man they bring in another man. To the women’s event. So there are now no women competing in the event, just men? Is this correct?

SidewaysOtter · 01/08/2024 16:59

Qanat53 · 01/08/2024 16:58

He.

That boxer that punched Angela Carini is a man.

BirthdayRainbow · 01/08/2024 17:00

What a complete heroine. We have to stand up for ourselves and then hope that men join us. We can do it without them but I have two here who stand with us.

WarriorN · 01/08/2024 17:00

RedPoster · 01/08/2024 16:51

Wait I’m really confused; people are saying that her competitor was born female but has elevated testosterone - is that not true? Or were they born male and have transitioned?

No, They've apparently never had testosterone tested.

They had genetic tests which showed they are male.

Summerflames · 01/08/2024 17:01

Apologies, what does DSD mean?

And good for Angela for quitting the fight, it shouldn't have been allowed to go ahead.

WarriorN · 01/08/2024 17:01

Difference of sexual development.

Can you please explain why you think the presence of a penis is relevant?

Your sex is determined by your chromosomes.

If you have a Y chromosome you are Male.

Whatever genitalia you have, whatever surgery you have to appear female, if you have a Y chromosome you are, AND WILL ALWAYS BE a man.

Some babies are born with DSD. They appear to be female. Later in life when puberty kicks in they become noticeably different, get genetically tested, and it's discovered that they are actually male - the presence of a Y chromosome determines their actual sex as opposed to the apparent sex.

They are undoubtedly in an awful situation. I am really sorry for them.

But my sympathy cannot extend to denying biology, the fact that they are men, and get all the physical advantages that their Y chromosome bestows in puberty.

With a punch 162% harder than women (real women) surely you can acknowledge the very real physical risk of serious harm - or death - to any female competitors that these actual men are put against?

Why not have a separate category to cater for men with DSD and Transgender? There's at least 2 in this Olympics.

I can’t see how they could feel any pride whatsoever.
The poor Italian boxer who has probably spent most of her life leading to this moment to have it stolen from her.
