Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

She’s the winner of that fight, in my eyes. She stood for what was right and fair.

I’m pretty incredulous that trans activists - in the face of all of the irrefutable scientific facts to the contrary - are maintaining that her opponent was a ‘cis woman with high testosterone.’ I’ve just read those exact words on Twitter. They just follow each other online so they have an echo chamber and it successfully convinces them that it was a fight between two women. They remind me of flat earthers.

gailforce2 · 01/08/2024 17:26

This also goes to show what a worthless bit of paper a passport has become and all athletes should be sex tested at the beginning of their careers to ensure that they are competing in the correct sex category.
The IOC using it as a "gotcha" as these 2 men have an F on their passport to allow them to compete in as females. It has been apparent for some time that their passports should have been changed to show M after they were sex tested.

And transphobic responses like this are left to stand like they're absolutely reasonable and not a form of hate speech, but those of us that call out transphobic posts and comments have ours deleted.

But this athlete isn't trans? They have XY chromosomes, male advantage and they seriously hurt a female athlete.

It really isn't complicated. It's shameful. At best, they're a fraudulent crook. And there's plenty worse they could be called.

'Such a nasty, spiteful place.'

'Still, I find it hilarious watching you all perform exactly like I expect you to.
Hence why I'm still here, for the entertainment
'

If you have your own personal definition of transphobia that doesn't match that of the general public understanding, then by all means, you will personally find posts stating scientific fact and not complying with your philosophical belief 'transphobic'.

Mumsnet doesn't have to support your personal definition any more than the general public does. Therefore, if they don't feel that it is transphobic, they will not delete posts.

If you use language that falls outside the Mumsnet talk guidelines while making your accusations, then yes, you will have your post deleted.

Just reading this article linked by a poster over in the naughty corner:

‘A female could get killed’: Olympic gender row erupts (archive.is)

ETA: Although it's giving me rage that male athletes are still having "she" plopped down about them. They are men!

They keep banging on about PCOS, which apparently makes you 'intersex' now. Yet more misogyny.

I accidentally voted YABU when I meant YANBU and now I can't change it.

So the number of people who think YABU is less than 3%.

Edited

You can change it. Click on YANBU and it changes.

A male born person beats a female at a dangerous sport and we’re all meant to just accept it. I don’t think they’ve realised the strength of feeling amongst women. We’re so used to being quiet and putting up with all sorts of crap. Not anymore.

Calling · 01/08/2024 17:32

The newspapers are referring to the man as 'she'. Also, gender, not sex.
Its all part of the problem.

WarriorN · 01/08/2024 17:32

Neither of these athletes are trans.

They're men making use of loopholes to cheat.

To be fair, (why should I mind you) it's entirely possible that the officials and trainers around them are the ones who are culpable rather than the individuals, who may well have spent a lot of time and effort making sure these males were included using the available loopholes.

Though they could quite easily stand down.

Boltonb · 01/08/2024 17:33

She is a hero in many eyes. Disgusting that she’s been so let down by the IOC.

What kind of man competes in a boxing competition against women, and enjoys his victories? How the hell can he put any value in his ridiculous rewards from fighting against women? Dickhead.

So proud of Angela Carini, but it should never have had to come to this.

Yes! Every time I read things like this where they use gender I mutter to myself "Sex! Not gender! Sex! They mean sex!" 😡

Edit: random copy paste accident there!😊

pigsDOfly · 01/08/2024 17:35

I don't watch the Olympics but have been reading about this travesty of a 'sporting event'.

In any other circumstances most people would, at the very least, be concerned at the prospect of a man assaulting a woman by punching her in the face, yet the IOC and all the people watching stood by and waited and watched as this young woman was assaulted by a man wanting to cheat his way into winning a medal.

With violence against women and girls at epidemic levels, is this what people really want from the Olympics, just more of the same?

So sick of them doing this.

More from Italian fighter Angela Carini. Did not want to talk about rules but added: "After the second one (blow to the nose) I couldn't breathe anymore. I went to my coach and said 'enough' because it takes maturity and courage to stop. I didn't feel like fighting anymore."

From Sean Ingle, sports journalist at the Guardian.

Sean has just talked with Angela in an interview.

What the fuck are you on about? Neither of the boxers in question are, or have ever claimed to be, trans. Utter twit.

LarkLane · 01/08/2024 17:39

Men punching women in the face is now officially an Olympic Sport.

That is utterly heartbreaking. She had to protect herself because the moronic cowards of the IOC were certainly not going to.
Courage indeed, Angela Carini.

TerfTalking · 01/08/2024 17:41

I can’t even express how fucking angry I am at this whole shit show. I’ve barely been able to go on Twitter this week due to knowing this match was going to happen. It’s an absolute disgrace and heads should roll. Angela is an absolute hero, she literally took one for the girls and she was brave enough to do it to raise awareness.

When that man walked into the ring, I didn’t even need to know who was wearing what colour. His gait told me which one was a man.

I am saddened and sickened to the core.

EsmaCannonball · 01/08/2024 17:42

Institutional naivety or institutional corruption? The IOC must know that if there is a way to cheat athletes, coaches and countries will exploit it.

Anyway, the sheer level of confusion and obfuscation in the public discourse on this just shows where pronoun politeness gets you.

WickedSerious · 01/08/2024 17:42

OlympicWomen · 01/08/2024 16:59

"enough posts" why should we be silent over a woman being treated like this?!

Because some men might get upset.

StellaOlivetti · 01/08/2024 17:43

Future generations will look back at this in utter incomprehension. Angela is a very brave woman. Absolutely total respect. I am furious on her behalf.

SloaneStreetVandal · 01/08/2024 17:44

The way this is being reported by all outlets is pissing me right off. Reporters and anchors tying themselves in knots to avoid reporting the facts.

This absolute bullshit, that one may choose gender, has resulted in a biological man punching a biological female square on the face on live TV today. Then being applauded as a winner. Fucking report that.

@VictorianBigot I have PCOS and was informed by a TRA on Twitter that it meant I was “intersex” 🙄

ScienceofSport had some great stats earlier that showed how massively over represented men with DSDs are in the sporting population in comparison to their general make up in the population. I’ll see if I can find them.
