To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

I'm size 18/20 and 5ft 8" tall. I waft about in dresses all summer, and walk for at least 3 hours a day every day - no chub rub whatsoever.

The walking is two nice length dog walks (morning and late afternoon/evening), then a long walk to the bus stop to get the bus to visit my DH in his nursing home. After the visit there's a walk to the bus station to get part way home, and a final half hour push uphill to get home.

Does lots of walking lessen chub rub?

Seaglassandchampagne · 31/07/2024 13:01

What's the issue with Snag, out of interest?

Lampshadeblue · 31/07/2024 13:01

I agree it’s shape. It’s worse for people with narrower hips as their thighs are more likely to meet.

Priggishsausagebore · 31/07/2024 13:01

I take smaller steps so my thighs don't rub past each other but are just moving together if that makes sense?

Spinet · 31/07/2024 13:02

I spray loads and loads of antiperspirant on my thighs and don't walk about much. And stand with my legs apart as much as possible.

I do wonder if I'm storing up trouble with the AP so near me fanny though.

Crunchymum · 31/07/2024 13:02

Liquid talc for the win.

One application and I'm fine all day (and I'm big and def suffer from chub rub without it)

Just shape I think
I've had chub rub from being 12 or so

Fridgetapas · 31/07/2024 13:03

Maybe more about body shape and where you distribute weight? I am a 10/12 so similar to you but haven’t had this problem - but I put all weight around my tummy rather than thighs.

OperationalSupport · 31/07/2024 13:04

@Twitchyeyebrow @CrumbleTots I have some shorts from Better Tights which I’m happy with. I’m a 12/14 (waist 31”, hip 41”), I’m 5ft8 and I got size ‘Quattro’.

When I was really over weight, I had this problem. Now I'm smaller as don't have this problem anymore. If you lost a stone would it improve?

Anyotherdude · 31/07/2024 13:05

Search Amazon for Wirarpa ladies safety boxer shorts -they are 95% cotton. £12.74 for three pairs (link wouldn’t copy - sorry!)

Merryoldgoat · 31/07/2024 13:05

It’s really odd you posted this as I’ve been wondering about chafing. I’m a size 22/24 and have never had this.

It must be to do with a few factors.

Maybe my legs are so fat they just meld together rather than rub 🤔🤣

ElleintheWoods · 31/07/2024 13:05

Really thin comfy nude tights or hold-ups.

I’m one of those weird people that wonders how anyone can wear a dress on bare legs. Unless wearing flip-flops, don’t the shoes not chafe, in addition to thighs? Work in a formal-ish environment and everyone here wears dresses with tights/ stockings right now.

I live in dresses in this weather though and generally all year round, they’re the best.

I find dresses the best thing to wear in this weather .... I get sweat lines round the waistband with shorts or trousers. Dresses are lovely and cool.

This. Lightweight thin cotton dresses are the best thing for me to wear in the hot weather, get a nice breeze where you need it most 😄! I find I get much hotter in tshirts and shorts, unless I wear my really lightweight linen ones and either a baggy tshirt or floaty top. Can't stand anything tight or clinging in the heat. My thighs don't meet though so don't have the rubbing issue. Would talcum powder help?, I couldn't imagine anything worse than wearing shorts underneath dresses in this heat

Not very practical advice on how to beat the heat this week.

Winterjoy · 31/07/2024 13:07

Conversely I'm always wafting about in dresses/skirts as don't know how anyone wears trousers in the heat and doesn't get sweat marks under bum/at top of legs (where bum meets thigh). But maybe apple shapes with smaller bums don't have that worry!

mitogoshi · 31/07/2024 13:08

I've got knickers that are basically shorts to mid thigh and wicking

TinkerTiger · 31/07/2024 13:09

Unfortunately thigh-rubbing is mostly down to body-type as opposed to size. Some bigger women don't rub and some smaller women do.

I find the snag chub rubs quite breathable. I also wear leggings, it may sound counter-productive but they actually absorb any sweat! It's behind the knees that kill me mostly

Cactiverde · 31/07/2024 13:09

OptimismvsRealism · 31/07/2024 12:53

I can't wear trousers comfortably at the best of times

I think some people have wider hips and so thighs don't meet in the middle

I think this is true, Pre children (when I had much narrower hips) despite being very thin, I occasionally would get chafing on my legs, and I never really understood how as I was like a bean pole and looking in the mirror my legs didn't even touch. Post kids, my hips are much much wider, I'm still pretty slim, but not like I was, and they never rub at all anymore.

Exactly. Plus, I've had this problem from being a slim size 10 - I only didn't have it when 6/8, so I'd have to lose a lot of stones and be thinner than I'd like to avoid it!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2024 13:11

I wear skirts a lot in warm weather. I've not experience much 'chub rub' despite having quite chunky thighs, except if wearing shorts if they've done that annoying thing riding up between the legs. But that's pretty much gone since we started walking a lot - not much weight loss but changed the shape of my legs a bit I suppose.

100% this. Also a size 10/12 (and a runner), and have had chub rub as long as I can remember... I'm as toned as I've ever been and I still can't wear short shorts! I just carry most of my weight on my bum and thighs... Going to try liquid talc after seeing a few people mention it here.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/07/2024 13:12

It's odd but I don't really have a problem with this - and I am someone who is overweight with quite big thighs. I do tend to put talc on in summer when I dress so maybe that's it. I also walk very slowly!

Funny enough I actually bought some cotton cycling shorts to try underneath (for when it was a bit cooler but not so cold I wanted leggings) and I didn't like the feeling as they held my thighs in - causing my knees to knock together.

I tend to alternate days in a dress with a day in shorts .

Movinghouseatlast · 31/07/2024 13:12

Try the Big Bloomers chub rub shorts. I've worn them in very high heat under beach dresses and you don't know you're wearing them.

The Snag ones are just awful, they are cut off tights!
