To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

I'm sorry, but why am I getting abuse?

Sometimes there are explanations that you can't avoid. It's not trying to be nasty. I don't see how it helps anyone by not stating the obvious.

Women have traditionally worn dresses for centuries. How have they coped throughout history?

Women have had centuries of being crushed in corsets, having their feet shoved into tiny shoes and giving birth in all sorts of situations.

You are probably of the “couldn’t stop a pig in an alley” shape referenced above that makes you walk like Mrs Doubtfire. Sorry, but some explanations can’t be avoided.

Snag shorts. So light. Have worn dresses in hot weather all over the place with those. And find even with them dresses much cooler than anything else.

tribalmango · 31/07/2024 13:44

I love my dresses. It's so nice not to have anything around my waist.
The only times I have chafed is when I'm running and only then if it's really hot i.e. sweating and/or a very long race where I get tired and I'm flopping about trying to get to the finish my gait changes.

I have Body Glide which works a treat, or I wear longer shorts!

I’ve never experienced thigh rub, it must be a shape thing and we’re all so different. Personally I find dresses to be the coolest, most comfortable thing to wear in the heat.

Same for me, despite being a size 18

benorjerry · 31/07/2024 13:46

For gardening I have my commando frock, it's brilliant and so quick to get dressed!

I'm a size 12 and have never had thigh rub - OP do you think you might just have particularly sensitive skin? I love dresses in this sort of weather, and when abroad.

This is marketed as body shaper but it’s too thin for shaping however makes a great anti chaf short. 2 summers wearing them with no problems at all and not having to pull them up every 5 minutes

BouleDeSuif · 31/07/2024 13:49

I'm pretty fat but still had chafed thighs at 5 stone lighter. Cycling shorts, or the Primark or M and S ones, without knickers under.

Beezknees · 31/07/2024 13:49

I'm fat and I wear cycle shorts under dresses, they do the trick, I don't get chub rub.

GetOuttaMyPubAgain · 31/07/2024 13:49

Snag or Next shorts underneath. I think they keep me cooler and less sweaty.

Christine1998 · 31/07/2024 13:50

Little angels liquid talc from Adsa (baby products section)

Love this.

Helpel · 31/07/2024 13:54

Size 14 with disproportionately large thighs that most definitely touch and I dont get the chafing. They stick together a bit in the heat but dont rub when i walk. It must be the shape of thigh or some other factor rather than just carrying extra weight. As a result, i love wearing dresses as they are far more flattering for my chunky legs!

Izzymoon · 31/07/2024 13:56

I never knew this was a thing. I see so many women wearing dresses all the time, I assumed it was the most comfortable thing for them.

oldmanandtheangel · 31/07/2024 13:56

At a size 18 I've never had thigh rub and didn't when a lot bigger...maybe I would if shorter but at 5ft 10 my thighs arent the problem, I"m more top heavy...
I can only wear dresses on hotter days, , much cooler. Polyester trousers for work are awful though... no option there

Sdpbody · 31/07/2024 13:56

This happens to me.

It is my shape generally. I weight 10.5 stone and my thighs rub together. I am a size 8 on top but still a size 14 on bottom as I have large hips and all my far goes on my thighs and arse.

The only time they don't is when I am under 9.5 stone.

Izzynohopanda · 31/07/2024 13:57

I don’t get chub rub either. Size 18 pear shaped. Dresses are much cooler in this weather , and maxi dresses cover my horrible legs.

TakeMe2Insanity · 31/07/2024 13:57

My thighs rub regardless of size (size 8 or now at size 16). I wear thin cotton cycling shorts. Honestly with a thin maxi on top I feel like I am wearing shorts but look and feel lovely.

coxesorangepippin · 31/07/2024 13:57

Weighloss isn't always the key

It depends on how wide your hips are

Fedupandstressed · 31/07/2024 13:57

Better tights have a sale on now. And mystery bags

Comedycook · 31/07/2024 13:58

I think it's more to do with shape rather than actual size.. I'm a size 16 and don't have this problem...my thighs touch by the way, no thigh gap. I live in dresses in the summer and never wear those shorts underneath

inthekiddle · 31/07/2024 13:59

Thanks so much for all the replies I was not expecting that!!

I would like to lose a bit of weight but that's not going to happen before the end of summer and as I said, my thighs always do this. Reassuring to hear it's probably down to shape. Not much I can do about that!

I have the M&S shorts and they're great but still sweaty. I might try the Sloggi as I have some of their other pants, and maybe the snag ones although seems varying reviews of that!

I had the lanacane (?) gel before but I'll try the others mentioned. And will try roll on deodorant! Never heard of liquid talc but will try to track some down!

It is to do with weight.

Everyone's thighs 'meet' at the top but if they are rubbing when you walk and causing discomfort, it's because of weight.

No, it really ISN'T to do with 'weight'. It's thigh shape and also, to a degree, how much you sweat and how sensitive your skin is. The chafing is just from friction made worse by sweat. Two thin thighs rubbing together will chafe just as much as two fat thighs, if you're someone whose skin reacts that way.

And not everyone's thighs touch at the top at all. Plenty of women have a 'thigh gap'. You're making some genuinely bizarre statements here.

I used to get this when I was a slim 11-year-old walking home from school in summer. I wasn't remotely overweight. My thighs touched at the very top. Never got any sort of chafing in cooler weather, but frequently got it on hot summer days.

As an adult, I've been a size 20, a size 8, and every size in between, and weight loss has never made the slightest jot of difference to thigh-rub.

I've also had a chafing rash on my shoulder from carrying a shoulder bag while wearing a slip dress in hot weather. Again, not a weight thing, just friction on skin that's damp from sweat.
