To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

Sloggi chub rub shorts. They are really light and not sweaty. Get them in nude or white or black depending on what you are wearing.

Sometimes try talcum powder but can wear off!

Are these the cotton ones or non cotton?

I wear a dress every single day of my life, in all seasons and all weathers. I don't own any trousers, jeans or skirts, just dresses and tights or leggings to go under my dresses and a few cardigans for the winter.

inthekiddle · 01/08/2024 19:52

@HotCrossBunplease no need to be pedantic! Obviously some companies (such as snag) don't ship to mainland Europe, hence the distinction

Talcum powder.

Never use talc.
It is basically a ground up rock and has been linked to cancer.

If you think powder would help, buy cornstarch powder.

ProudMamaBear92 · 01/08/2024 19:56

I’m very athletic, not fat in the slightest, uk 8, but have larger thighs at the top. I get chub rub, not badly but if I’m walking or running a long time. Talc is the way to go

mathanxiety · 01/08/2024 19:56

You can also buy chub rub pads and bands to apply directly to the points of contact.

Tiredmum12389 · 01/08/2024 19:59

I wear short leggings they don't make me tops weary and equally far better than the thighs sticking together and rubbing. Xx

Pickingmyselfup · 01/08/2024 20:01

I can definitely confirm body glide works, I did a hot 14km run in the smallest of shorts and had no rub plus it didn't need applying. I do think shorts work best under dresses because I get sweaty legs so it helps just keep them a bit drier. I do not get along with bare legs and metal or leather seats, I'm not a sweaty person at all but that combination leaves me sitting in a puddle 🤢

I think it's just as hot here as abroad for some parts of summer amd I like to wear a dress. I use the snag chubrub tights (does anyone have any recommendations of other brands as I don't want to give them any future purchases?) under dresses. Yes they're slightly sweaty but I'm sweating anyway. 🤷

If I'm doing lots of walking though I tend to opt for shorts and t-shirt.

I couldn't not wear dresses all summer! I love a nice dress. Feel much more frumpy in shorts.

Better Tights have the same sort of products as Snag Tights and they’re a good company.

What's the issue with Snag, out of interest?

Lots of women are pissed of with some of their advertising using men in women’s underwear and tights. They have toned it down, presumably due to the outcry, but it gave a lot of us the long term ick

StMarieforme · 01/08/2024 20:19

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2024 12:54

No easy way to say this without being blunt, but it has to be your weight or shape.

This isn't an issue I've ever come across.

Anyone who doesn't have a thigh gap can be affected by chafing. It's very common. Men who wear baggy cargo shorts can get it too. Dancers with very straight legs can get it.

The term 'chub rub' is ridiculous.

StMarieforme · 01/08/2024 20:20

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 31/07/2024 12:57

Don’t wear pants under the modesty shorts. That way it’s not an extra layer.

It is build. I had it worse at a size 14 than my current 16 strangely.

Build yes

Size no.

That's why.

I'm size 18/20 and 5ft 8" tall. I waft about in dresses all summer, and walk for at least 3 hours a day every day - no chub rub whatsoever.

The walking is two nice length dog walks (morning and late afternoon/evening), then a long walk to the bus stop to get the bus to visit my DH in his nursing home. After the visit there's a walk to the bus station to get part way home, and a final half hour push uphill to get home.

Does lots of walking lessen chub rub?

No. It's your shape.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 01/08/2024 20:47

Yes, I shred those at the thigh. Mine, albeit a different brand, lasted one wear.

sgtmajormum · 01/08/2024 20:47

No matter what size I've been througout my life (10-18) I've always had a problem with thighs chaffing. I'm an apple shape so narrow hips, which I guess is the issue. I have several pairs of long cotton sloggi pants/shorts which I wear under dresses.
Have tried the snag ones but find I overheat in them.

I love the M@S chub rub shorts, not too hot and stay in place, the legs don’t roll up or anything, plus I love them because they are NOT supportive so don’t make you uncomfortable.

Yes but you didn’t say “Mainland” Europe. It makes me sad that post Brexit someone saying Europe will be understood not to include the UK. Especially a British person, if you are one!

I find a nice very short shorts, which are long enough to cover thighs, but short enough to be hidden. They are fluffy one and from a light material, so they are not making me sweating at all.

MagicFarawayTea · 01/08/2024 21:08

Liquid talc! £1 in the baby section of B&M .

laraitopbanana · 01/08/2024 21:09

You need to find the correct material from the good brand for you.

try them all until you find something working.

also do mind the material of the dress.

Good luck!

Talcum powder.

This reminds me of Ross from 'Friends' putting Talcum Powder on his legs to help get his leather trousers back on 😂

Sakuem · 01/08/2024 21:23

I'd like to wear dresses, but don't feel comfortable in them, plus I like having trouser pockets 😂
I like loose flowy cotton trousers that protect from UV but also let the air flow.

Wonderfulstuff · 01/08/2024 21:30

Lol you can almost hear the people tripping over themselves with excited glee to come and fat shame the poor OP. I may have missed it but I don't think that was what she was asking for in her original post?

OP - try megababe or cotton cycling shorts.

Or just do the occasional lunge each time you feel a breeze approaching. The lady's summer lunge is oft spotted on the Tube platform as a train is approaching. IYKYK.

Filamumof9 · 01/08/2024 21:45

I live in a tropical climate and 90 percent of my time I wear dresses. i wear cotton cycling shorts underneath and never find it too hot. i only own one pair of shorts and they are jeans. I find that those tend to be warmer than dresses, whereby the air can circulatie better.
