To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

What part don't you understand?
What people might be saying on an online forum bears no resemblance to what I've experienced/heard in real life, which is slim women referring to themselves having 'chub rub'. Hope that helps.

Ok, you said you’d never heard of it. Then changed that to say you’d read the thread and HAD read people saying they have chub rub whilst slim.
It’s obvious you’re being obtuse. Hope that helps.

If your thighs rub and chafe, that's telling you something.

Kindly, as you did ask, if you can't wear something like a dress, you need to lose weight.

But if you read the other responses here @MummyLongLegsss you will see that you are quite wrong about actual weight, dress size or BMI being the issue .

I'm really interested in responses saying that people with wider hips may suffer less as their thighs naturally may be further apart - and I guess that's why I find it less of a problem than some other people do .

How do threads always get so argumentative? Honestly: it’s just chub rub.

Exactly. The OPs AIBU was: 'AIBU to wonder how women [general] wear dresses in the heat'.

I answered that it's not something I - as a woman - have experienced and I don't know any other slender women personally that have. My response was to the OP, no one else.

I've just explained what I meant. Not doing it again.

Dresses are much better than tight denim shorts with thighs bulging out and some top tucked in and a belt added! That's not hot weather wear!

Rubyupbeat · 01/08/2024 15:45

Fem fresh powder, it's not talc, but cornflour. I use it under my boobs and it keeps dry all day.
Give it a try, it was a game changer for me

I have literally never heard a slim woman complain about 'chub rub' because they have no 'chub' to 'rub'. Clue is in the name...

I don't think it's that simple though and my posted photo shows why.

I am very clearly pear shaped, narrow shoulders, rib cage, no boobs but my bottom half is bigger than my top. My thighs do have "chub" but I currently weigh 8 stone and my overall body fat is around about 27%, BMI is about 21.

I work hard in the gym lifting heavy weights, I'm training for a half marathon, I took that photo just before a 12K run and am about to go do 14K.

So by all accounts I'm healthy, I'm strong but I carry fat on my legs. As a personal preference I'm trying to build muscle and get to a much lower body fat but I don't need to to.

We all have fat and we need fat but some more than others and some of us carry it differently. Telling people they only have thigh rub because they are too fat really isn't helpful when many of us have said it's not because we are overweight.

Yes but I wear linen shorts, to above mid thigh and wide legged, then a loose linen tunic or sleeveless/ shirt sleeve blouse.

It’s super cool and breezy. No thigh rub, no thigh sweat, lots of ventilation to the area .

tuttuttutt · 01/08/2024 16:09

Linen is so wrinkly and scruffy! Even when ironed.

No it’s not. It creases and then drops out again and looks completely appropriate.

Yes, that is a clear illustration of your points.

Tbh - and looking at your photo - I think it’s a pear shaped complaint. I’ve got narrow hips but I don’t carry weight in that area so much. I was wondering why I didn’t have the chub rub if it’s hips as I’m straight sided as a twelve year old boy. But that’s not where I carry fat ( post pregnancy my belly is ☹️).

Mine does wrinkle a bit but I think it looks quite a summery wrinkle. For blouses muslin is a great alternative. That doesn’t wrinkle .

Are you being sarcastic? There's a massive crease down the middle (in fact it's not quite central) as well as it being generally pretty creased. It's not a problem, I'm working from my garden office.

The crease down the middle is from your ironing or folding. The others are minor. None look bad at all. Pretty much any fabric you wear will look worse than that if you wear it out in a car because of seat belts 🤷‍♀️ A few creases don’t bother me, and certainly aren’t more important than being cool in natural fabrics.

Well yes, clearly I'm not bothered about them today otherwise I wouldn't be wearing it. Today is about keeping cool.
You had said that linen will look appropriate because the creases drop out.

I was showing you that 1) the creases (from being crushed in the cupboard - not ironed!) have not dropped out and 2) I don't think it would look appropriate for say presenting a talk at work or for a customer facing role (subjective though).

The seat belt doesn't leave lines in any of my other dresses.

I hang mine so they don’t get those ingrained creases. Wearing creases drop out. I never care. I’d go anywhere in Linen.

It’s better than sweaty thighs and feeling dreadful. And it only comes around a few days ( weeks at most) each year .

bumblebee1987 · 01/08/2024 17:41

I recently lost 4.5 stone because I love dresses and was sick of chub rub in the heat and I just wanted to be comfortable on holiday for the first time ever. I can confirm, it is NOTHING to do with weight, my chub rub is just as bad at a size 10 as it was at a size 18. So for this holiday which I am currently on, I gave up on the idea of dresses and just got a load of shorts and tops. Don't feel like me really, but evidently I'm not built for dresses!

JohnTheRevelator · 01/08/2024 17:43

I'm normally a jeggings and T-shirt/jumper (depending on the season) person, but in this heat (31 degrees here today) I can't tolerate anything snug around my legs and I only wear dresses. I must admit I don't really like wearing them as they're not my usual attire, but I've tried wearing jeggings and nearly melted. And yes,I am also quite chubby (size 16/18). I put a good dose of Johnson's baby talc between my thighs before venturing out and thankfully it seems to do the trick.

vickylou78 · 01/08/2024 17:46

Sloggi chub rub shorts. They are really light and not sweaty. Get them in nude or white or black depending on what you are wearing.

Sometimes try talcum powder but can wear off!

Are the chub rub things supposed to be worn over knickers or instead of?

Also interested in recommendations other than snag.

Over knickers. I find Better Tights are more comfortable and cooler than Snag tights. Currently they are on offer for £6 per pair.
