How and where will the government get the money from I wonder?

About time too. The UK needs to realise that if we want qualified staff to stay in post and contribute to society (doctors and teachers) they needs to be paid appropriately. After years of cuts this pay ride is long over due.

Guavafish1 · 29/07/2024 13:53

GOOD - about bloody time!

Now for the teachers.

Thank goodness the Tory party have been booted out… I hope the reform party doesn’t come in next.

Can MN please run some sort of course on economics and funding? All these 'where does money come from' post are getting very tedious

I’m actually quite intrigued by the ‘doctors don’t need a pay rise’ brigade.

Why shouldn’t doctors have higher salaries?

libertybonds · 29/07/2024 13:54

Good. Too bad the Tories created this horrible problem; hopefully it's not too late for Labour efforts to help.

Teachers are being offered 5.5% aren’t they?

DBD1975 · 29/07/2024 13:55

Rachel Reeves will be telling us later today but I totally support the decision. This is good news if the doctors agree to it.

avocadotofu · 29/07/2024 13:55

That's wonderful news! They were terribly underpaid.

Bignanna · 29/07/2024 13:56

Findingmypurposeinlife · 29/07/2024 13:50

Hopefully MP's will freeze their own pay and subsidise it from the savings they make.

Edited

Ha Ha!

It’s coming from the magic money tree

In the magical money orchard that the tories planted 14 years ago . I think there’s a password you have to whisper to get in, used to be PPI then Rwanda not sure what labours password is for it currently 😂

WhatTheFuk · 29/07/2024 13:57

@Bignanna I see no option to edit. I'd love to know how!

LoopyGremlin · 29/07/2024 13:58

Good. The pay for such highly qualified professionals is ridiculous.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 29/07/2024 13:59

The money will come from higher taxes. Given they have already said they likely can't give other public sector workers even a 1% pay rise this year (because they can't afford it), they're going to have to raise taxes for this.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/07/2024 14:03

That’s brilliant! They’re massively underpaid for what they do.

crumblingschools · 29/07/2024 14:03

Is doctor’s pay completely funded via NHS budgets? If teachers’ pay goes up 5.5% that needs to be fully funded together with the on cost hit otherwise many schools won’t be able to fund it

anyolddinosaur · 29/07/2024 14:03

Unless you want junior doctors emigrating or working as locums to make a decent living it was necessary. It's still a lot less than they have lost over the years so no guarantee they'll accept it.

As for the funding - 20-40% of it goes back to the government in tax, a further 9% goes on paying back student loans. Then you save on some of the locum bills because you've kept some junior doctors and those savings are considerable. Then you get people back to work who havent been able to work because of the delays in treatment. And after all that they spend their money and you get some extra back in tax.

The net cost is very considerably less than you think.

Combattingthemoaners · 29/07/2024 14:04

Good. Maybe they have a secret pot for public services like the Tories used to have for their cronies?

Qanat53 · 29/07/2024 14:05

I do laugh though at the many NHS Surgeons I meet in my area. Always saying how they don’t get “paid enough” to do various things, including sending kids to private school.
In total BS, they live nicely, holidays and kids in private school.
What they were really saying is they can’t afford to send their kids “boarding” at private school. sad

ElleneAsanto · 29/07/2024 14:06

Public sector pay rises don’t affect inflation. The “consumers” of the service aren’t paying for it directly.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2024 14:06

Well I hope the rest of the NHS gets the same amount.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/07/2024 14:07

Paying the doctors that do the vast majority of doctoring in our hospitals just has to be a priority for any decent society. And i For one am delighted that Labour have made this a priority.

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 29/07/2024 14:07

That’s good news!

anyolddinosaur · 29/07/2024 14:08

Oops - I forgot the National insurance. It costs even less than I thought.

SundayBloodySunday · 29/07/2024 14:08

25 days in power and a junior Dr resolution. How refreshing to have a government that actually governs!

WhatTheFuk · 29/07/2024 14:08

Toddlerteaplease · 29/07/2024 14:06

Well I hope the rest of the NHS gets the same amount.

The rest of the NHS have their own unions to negotiate pay.

Priggishsausagebore · 29/07/2024 14:08

Inthemosquitogarden · 29/07/2024 13:22

Oh and various new/rebuild hospital projects are also slated to be cancelled

That will be bad for care, so I hope they don't do that. So many hospital buildings are not fit for purpose any more.
