To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

Yes YABU.

she hasn’t been the victim of racism or misogyny so far, so there’s no reason to suppose that will change.

her record as a DA and politician has been criticized, including by women and that is legitimate and not prejudice.

Supersimkin7 · 22/07/2024 12:07

I don’t think she’s got the glitz to win. Which is also a worry.

OneTC · 22/07/2024 12:11

Heard Nigel Farage on LBC this morning saying he didn't think people would vote for a "black African woman"

He's such a fucking revolting specimen, worse than his NF name sakes

DarkandStormyNightie · 22/07/2024 12:15

If Trump's supporters throw anti semetism at her then they'd do well to remember Trump's daughter Ivanka and SIL are practising Jews. She could easily rally that one back!

I think she should stand proud, no hand wringing about being a black woman. Go all in and lean into her strengths. She's got a good strategic position to leverage against an adjudicated sexual abuser who is a convicted felon looking to take away women's reproductive rights.

Maybe now is the time!

And yet when Obama ran for office the African-American population of America came out in their millions to vote for him.

Sausagenbacon · 22/07/2024 12:19

Honestly. Aside from her sex and racial background, perhaps you'd like to see if she's a decent candidate. You know, qualities outside of identity crap.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 22/07/2024 12:20

I doubt she would have got where she is already without having a pretty thick skin with regards to personal attacks...
I hope that she doesn't lean too heavily on the 'the first female president' angle, its not a selling point.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2024 12:21

She is no wallflower! She’s a highly effective prosecutor.

Trump will refuse to debate against her because he knows she’d wipe the floor with him.

She’ll be well able to cope with the misogyny and racism that comes with being a very effective operator in the public eye.

henlake7 · 22/07/2024 12:23

Given that she is a woman in politics who has already gotten to a high level I doubt that there is anything anybody could say she hasnt heard before!

Sadly though I really cant see middle America voting for her....too many 'scary' factors involved for the -ists (then again I dont see how Trump still has any popularity so no clue what they are doing over there!).

Reproductive rights are a key ballot issue this time. Roe vs Wade has divided the country. Trump has a string of sexual abuse allegations and now a adjudication against him, showing he doesn't respect women. Plus there's more lurking in the Epstein files to come out. It would be politically savvy of her to focus on reaching the female vote by making the connection.

The OP, and other posters who can only view a candidate through the lens of Identity

SonicTheHodgeheg · 22/07/2024 12:27

Yabu

Do all election campaigns make you anxious ?

Maybe you should look into her public profile before assuming that people will be “mean” because she’s a woman of colour. Criticising policy and decisions is fair play and she’s rightly not going to hide behind her identity. Her work should be judged against her predecessors and opponents and I doubt that she wants to be treated with kids gloves because she is a WOC. She will know first hand what campaigning is like and ai doubt that there’s any new criticisms of her that can be used against her because she’s done it before and has probably seen social media

I think that there’s no chance that she will win and that Trump is right to say that Harris will be easier to defeat than Biden.

yully · 22/07/2024 12:31

OP, do you have the same concerns for Kemi Badenoch, who is expected to become leader of the opposition here?

I don't think Kamala Harris comes across well. I don't think she can beat Trump. Michelle Obama probably could, though.

god I hope you're wrong

I've never understood the obsession with having the first of the various different 'identity groups' in political office. If it happens because the politician is the best one trying for the job, that's wonderful, but too often they're pushed on us simply because of their race, sex, or other similar trait that shouldn't come into the question at all.

Harris isn't popular among most Americans I know, but the reasons people object to her have nothing to do with her sex, race, or the fact that her husband is Jewish (something I wasn't even aware of before reading it here, tbh). She leaves much to be desired in the matters that count.

I would put money on the both of these being completely incorrect
She most likely has been the victim of racism or misogyny as she is not white or male
and no reason to suppose that will change I think you are very naive if you dont think she will get more abuse and hate by standing

I would love for her to win!

Bucees · 22/07/2024 12:37

and it says so much about the country when they would rather have a convicted criminal in charge than a woman

This election…either you vote for the democrats or against Trump.

VP Harris has not had a strong term and her background is problematic. Namely, she had an affair with the mayor of San Fran which is apparently why she got the prosecutor job. Her run for nomination included a manifesto which was Marxist in nature.

She isn’t my preferred candidate and it would be a vote against Trump rather than a vote for the democrats. I’d prefer to vote for the democrats. Let’s see what happens in the next week. Mike Bloomberg…please stand up.

I thought she was an American of half black, half Indian parentage? …Goes of to check…just checked. She’s definitely half black, half Indian and an American. Not African.

Maybe someone needs to show Farage how to use an Atlas?

Throughout her career, the vice president has been repeatedly forced to deny that her relationship with former San Francisco Willie Brown - 31 years her senior - was the main defining step in her political career. They are seen in 1995

While their relationship has often been described as an affair, Brown was separated from his wife Blanche Vitero for more than a decade when he and Harris, 59, dated in the mid-1990s.
Their steamy past resurfaced in January 2019, when Brown published an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle with the headline, 'Sure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?'

Is this like her drinking problem, that I have not found anything on (I havent delved deep though)?

And still, even if she had an affair, thats still better than the racist sexist convicted on 34 counts criminal who is the other option

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 22/07/2024 12:59

Before Biden picked Harris he announced that he would only consider a "woman of colour" for VP. He basically made it clear that he would be making a diversity hire so that he could show how progressive he was. Even if she were a great potential president (she isn't) he totally undermined her by making that statement. Now they are stuck with this completely unsuitable candidate.
