I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

A "wallflower" is a very sexist term with no male equivalent. I'm sure she has the resilience to cope, she has had to all her life. America is obviously a much more racially charged country than the UK unfortunately.

Just my personal opinion, but getting back to whether Josh Shapiro could be picked as VP. Sadly, I think the Israel-Hamas war is a big factor, as pro-Palestinian support is strong among the younger voters whom KH really needs to keep onside. Think of the recent demos on university campuses, for example.

Given the current charged atmosphere, can she risk picking a VP who could be perceived as being strongly pro-Israel? Even if they have many positive qualities? It’s totally unfair, but the situation in Gaza is a flashpoint right now.

CJsGoldfish · 28/07/2024 00:14

The VP pick should probably be someone from a swing state. Which would make Mark Kelly and Josh Shapiro good candidates.
Andy Beshear has been mentioned and I think he'd be a great pick

She’s very mediocre, her sex and race have advantaged her in her career above her capabilities. If she were white and male she just wouldn’t be where she is. She isn’t a good speaker and seems to regularly get her arse handed to her. She can’t keep staff and is rumoured to be a bully. Just saying.

Wow,that's amazing. The first person in history who gets ahead because they're black and/ or female. And to the highest job in the land?!

Actually ilovemoney is correct. She was a clear diversity hire by Biden. If you look at her time in office she has achieved absolutely nothing. Her record as a prosecutor is poor. She is not a good public speaker, often coming across as clueless, ill-prepared and unintelligent. Which is quite an achievement when you access to numerous advisors and script writers. For people to now vote for her on the sole basis of race/gender would be really sad.

Papyrophile · 28/07/2024 13:05

Looking at the US press, quite a bit of smart money is riding on Andy Beshear. Between him and Kelly is my guess today.

Yes YABU.

she hasn’t been the victim of racism or misogyny so far, so there’s no reason to suppose that will change.

her record as a DA and politician has been criticized, including by women and that is legitimate and not prejudice.

Yeah, all those 'miserable old cat lady' comments are just fine 🙄

Heard Nigel Farage on LBC this morning saying he didn't think people would vote for a "black African woman"

He's such a fucking revolting specimen, worse than his NF name sakes

Edited

And of course he doesn't even bother to correct his assumption that she originates from Africa.

Despicable old prick.

Yabu

Do all election campaigns make you anxious ?

Maybe you should look into her public profile before assuming that people will be “mean” because she’s a woman of colour. Criticising policy and decisions is fair play and she’s rightly not going to hide behind her identity. Her work should be judged against her predecessors and opponents and I doubt that she wants to be treated with kids gloves because she is a WOC. She will know first hand what campaigning is like and ai doubt that there’s any new criticisms of her that can be used against her because she’s done it before and has probably seen social media

I think that there’s no chance that she will win and that Trump is right to say that Harris will be easier to defeat than Biden.

I think you are wrong. My family still live in America and according to my mom, who is pretty keyed in when it comes to US politics, there has been a resurgence in the Democratic party, people are hopeful again and she's starting to sway the minds of the more level headed Republicans who don't want a convicted felon who is destroying women's rights in office. Also, just imagine if she and trump actually debated? She's a successful prosecutor and he's a bumbling moron who can barely string a coherent sentence together. She would destroy him. Sure, maybe the idiotic trump supporters in the Midwest won't vote for her, but they don't represent the majority in any way. As long as people actually make the effort to vote and there is a good turnout, Harris will win.

Kelly is so much more interesting! But it’ll all come down to who polls best in the key states.

Papyrophile · 28/07/2024 18:12

Kelly is fairly legitimately a hero, married to a victim senator, and a really strong voice for gun control. In hard poitical terms, he does not deliver a big state. He might deliver an even bigger chunk of votes nationally because so many sympathize with his POV. I like what I know of him but I doubt that Democrat strategists are reading the musings of randoms on a UK parenting site.
