To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

Now she's been called a crazy cat lady who isn't qualified to be president because she never had kids by trumps running mate on that preppy nazi tuckers show.

So she's definitely been the victim misogynistic abuse today

And yet when Obama ran for office the African-American population of America came out in their millions to vote for him.

The trouble is the people who voted for Obama probably reconciled themselves that "oh well, at least he's a man". That's not to take away from Obama as a person because I admire him greatly, to break through the embedded prejudice he has had all his life.

KH has being a woman and being black as two sticks to beat her with and hold her back.

Repulsive and unthinkable in 21st century, but it's the way things are in US.

It's a tragedy that an educated, capable woman is held back because of who she is, not based on her capabilities.

i think she's been in the background because she wasn't clear on her role and where she could add value. As normal the limelight, the attention and the power is with the white males. I hope now she has the opportunity to blossom, to grow in stature and build her brand.

I wish her well and am watching intently over the coming months to see how things go for her.

She’s a terrible candidate. People like her in public life undermine the achievements of truly talented people from non white backgrounds, through being diversity hires.

An odd comment given that she was elected (and not hired) to many of the prominent offices she had held in her career (District Attorney of California, Attorney General of California, US Senator).

Her being appointed VP is an outlier in an impressive career.

This isn’t being racist. It is saying that alot of Americans are racist misogynists. What do you think? Will half of Americans vote for this woman?

Nigel Farage not racist?

Give me strength....

Livelovebehappy · 22/07/2024 18:43

OneTC · 22/07/2024 12:11

Heard Nigel Farage on LBC this morning saying he didn't think people would vote for a "black African woman"

He's such a fucking revolting specimen, worse than his NF name sakes

Edited

Tbh it's a fact that the majority of people who wont vote for her is due to her being a woman and being black. He's just confirming the reality of the situation. Unpleasant, yes. But it's factually true. Not necessarily saying he wouldn't vote for her because of that, but knows some Americans won't.

I’m not even a fan of her but yes she is well qualified.

There’s always an excuse for racists to claim a certain minority isn’t competent, unless that minority happens to be someone like Candace owens or Suella Braverman who dance for racists basically.

A significant part of racism is making the bar so much higher for people of colour and coming down on them so much harder if they make any mistake.

Obama had to be damn near flawless and then we got sloppy Trump 😑

daisychain01 · 22/07/2024 18:45

Nancy Pelosi has just endorsed Kamala Harris - a pivotal moment, she is very influential.

Parker231 · 22/07/2024 18:45

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2024 12:21

She is no wallflower! She’s a highly effective prosecutor.

Trump will refuse to debate against her because he knows she’d wipe the floor with him.

She’ll be well able to cope with the misogyny and racism that comes with being a very effective operator in the public eye.

Agree but watching Trump try and debate against her would be hilarious. He wouldn’t stand a chance!

Shaketherombooga · 22/07/2024 18:46

She’s been a DA and Vice -President son reckon is pretty robust!

DarkandStormyNightie · 22/07/2024 12:24

Reproductive rights are a key ballot issue this time. Roe vs Wade has divided the country. Trump has a string of sexual abuse allegations and now a adjudication against him, showing he doesn't respect women. Plus there's more lurking in the Epstein files to come out. It would be politically savvy of her to focus on reaching the female vote by making the connection.

This. A lot of women, particularly younger women, will vote for her.

I can't wait - Trump is now the old slow guy who can't string a sentence together.

I hope he's poohing himself, now that he doesn't have Biden to make him feel better about himself.

Women come into their own when they are freed from the shackles of men getting in their way. I hope Kamala is that woman.

Ive just heard the name Gavin Newsom as a good match as her running mate. Only trouble is he is also in California and they tend to want a greater geographic spread between the candidate and running mate. Interesting times though...

@yully

god I hope you're wrong

You won't be happy for a black woman to become leader of the opposition? Why is that?

Geez, I've just seen that Vance doesn't think childless people should be allowed to vote.

How Trump is even competitive, let alone the favorite, is so bewildering.

They won’t vote for a woman. Even Condeleeza Ride has said this. It’s a sexist society first, then racist.

Countrylife2002 · 22/07/2024 19:22

I personally hope she comes out full on about women. What’s about to hit the US if she doesn’t win brings Gilead to mind. JD Vance is even more terrifying than Trump. No abortions, full stop. And women should stay with abusive husbands. Harris needs to tell women to wake up.

WildLemur · 22/07/2024 19:30

Countrylife2002 · 22/07/2024 19:19

I think that's overblown.

Clinton was about 80,000 votes (accross 3 swing states) away from a win and handily won the popular vote.

She was an unpopular candidate with a lot of baggage (some of it unfair, some self-inflicted).

And against the background of the gutting of abortion rights, being a woman probably carries more political advantage now than it has in other recent cycles.

I don't think she's the favorite (largely because of the boost the assassination attempt has been to the Trump campaign) but I do think Kamala has a path to victory.

Sausagenbacon · 22/07/2024 19:31

How many of you have actually heard her debate? From what I've heard of her, she's not impressive.
Plus, for those thinking woman=pro-women, she's very much TWAW.

Countrylife2002 · 22/07/2024 19:32

@WildLemur yes I think she can feasibly do it too, especially if she can pick a running mate for prime electoral advantage. Nothing can go wrong though, and she needs to take no prisoners now and go for it - no soft soaping. Forget Biden.

Countrylife2002 · 22/07/2024 19:33

She is TWAW but that’s nothing compared to what is going to hit the world (and particularly US women) if Trump wins.

And I have heard she is massively impressive. Just held back by Biden.

GingerPirate · 22/07/2024 19:54

Oh, OP, she's not to win.
Donald Trump is.

SandandSky · 22/07/2024 19:56

I know what you mean - my first thought was “they’ll eat her alive”

so many people are going to hate on her in can see it… for really stupid reasons too

I think she's a good debater. She beat Pence (himself no slouch) quite handily in the VP debates. She did struggle to gain traction in the 2019 Dem leadership debates but that was a crowded field in which she wasn't the obvious first choice for either wing of the party.

popthepopcorns · 22/07/2024 20:20

She isn't confirmed as the candidate yet, is she? Obama was very pointed about not mentioning her in his tweets about Biden.

WildLemur · 22/07/2024 20:21

To add re Kamala as a debater- I would be unsurprised if Trump pulls out of any future debates. I think he'd be scared to go up against her, one on one.
