To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

What terrifies me is that people will not vote for Harris because she's not their perfect candidate- so Trump will win. "She's not Presidential material" or "I don't like her position on Gaza". So what? SHE'S NOT TRUMP!!!!! Vote- and ask questions later.

Countrylife2002 · 25/07/2024 07:58

@CurlewKate absolutely! I felt the same about the UK election but the stakes are much higher with the threat of Trump.

BruFord · 24/07/2024 23:57

@CJsGoldfish I wouldn’t vote for him, but you can’t deny that Vance has grit and intellect. Are you aware of his background?

You could say the same about Hitler

Moonmelodies · 25/07/2024 08:18

Hopefully she will be robust enough to handle the teasing and name-calling - although better to have that than bullets pinging off the side of her noggin like that orange fella.

WildLemur · 25/07/2024 08:47

knitnerd90 · 25/07/2024 06:46

I was in the US for that election. I am not convinced it on its own was enough to tip it. If calling people "deplorable" were enough to tip an election, everything Trump says and said should have made him lose.

I always found it odd that people so openly took offense to the deplorables comment, given the context.

I'm making the opposite argument: colour, creed, gender, ability to spell etc. shouldn't factor in selection, but that's been the Democrat's policy - meritocracy has been abandoned in favour of prioritising 'oppressed' groups. It's DEI & Critical Theory 101.

And FWIW I think KemiB should be the next Tory leader because she's the best person for the job, not because she ticks some social justice warrior's boxes.

Yes, implying she is only where she is because if DEI. That’s what I said.
But anyone who thinks Badenoch is the best for anything is questionable anyway.

BIossomtoes · 25/07/2024 09:59

I really hope Badenoch’s the next Tory leader. I want a Labour government for at least the next decade.

Hear, hear. Though Tbf, at least 5 of them ought to guarantee that.

CJsGoldfish · 25/07/2024 05:58

I am indeed. I even saw the movie 🤷‍♀️

His background doesn't make his comments any less vile. Or the idea that he's been picked to appeal to fellow hillbillies any less true 🙄

Aside from his latest "childless cat lady" insults or the criticism of people who left unhappy, or "even violent" marriages as a trick of the sexual revolution, you know he was a self confessed 'Never Trump' guy not too long ago? That he called Donald an idiot and 'Americas Hitler'? That he such a sell out as well as having the ugly character traits he has shown, isn't excused by his background

@CJsGoldfish Of course he’s been picked to appeal to fellow hillbillies, it’s standard politics to pick candidates to appeal to a certain group of voters.

I think he’s an odd blend of contradictions, tbh, and certainly a political opportunist, as most politicians are!

On the one hand, married to a WOC born to immigrant parents with her own successful career. Plus he’s from an impoverished background. In theory, the Dems would like him as a candidate!

Yet he’s fiercely anti-abortion and has made some horrible comments about both his running mate and other politicians. I can’t understand the anti-abortion stance, you’d think he’d understand how hard it is bringing up an unplanned child.

Anyway, he’s an odd one and I’m so relieved that KH is now the presidential candidate and can raise a credible challenge to the Trump/Vance ticket. 🤞

@Countrylife2002 Yes, and most other politicians as well. Angela Rayner springs to mind, also Keir Starmer. They’ve both got grit and intellect.

Papyrophile · 26/07/2024 20:09

The Obamas have endorsed her as the Democrat nominee today, and committed to her campaign. She's the official candidate. I think they did it wrong and they should have had a fierce short sharp contest at the convention, but now it's all about picking the right VP.

Not the official candidate quite yet.

And, I do think she can beat Trump. It will be very tight though.

Papyrophile · 26/07/2024 20:16

You're quite right @YankSplaining . The technicalities of election procedures are convoluted. But I wouldn't be the person who bets against her as the Dem candidate from on. Who do you suggest as VP?

I’m not exactly sure who, but I think it should be a centrist Democrat who’s been recently (last 10 years) elected in a swing state. Josh Shapiro might be good, but there’s the problem with the recent rise in antisemitism.

Papyrophile · 26/07/2024 20:36

Josh Shapiro has been on my shortlist of VP candidates, but given Kamala is married to Doug Emhoff, it might look too Jewish, and an all female ticket looks too radical. I like Pete Buttigieg (but female+ gay... I hear the cat calling now). My money is on Kelly.

Papyrophile · 26/07/2024 20:45

All American hero, in favour of proper gun control. From a European perspective, he looks the business. But Europeans don't have input.

Papyrophile · 26/07/2024 20:49

I would like Gretchen Whitmer best, but I am not deluded enough to think that's a possibility. And nor is any senior Democrat. She's saving her energy for 2028, I think.

WildLemur · 26/07/2024 23:01

I agree Kelly is the most likely. It's sobering that Shapiro's ethnicity is likely counting against him, though.

Yes, exactly those words. Look. https://x.com/LBC/status/1815291942214791659

Not those exact words. He said the democrats won’t get rid of her. (I guess he is saying she is a DEI hire which is a familiar rant). He doesn’t seem to have said anything about whether people would vote for her. Why wouldn’t they they voted for Obama.

calling her African is ridiculous. She is half Tamil Indian from her mother. Her father was from the Caribbean.

She’s dealt with racism all her life. I’m sure her mothers family/community would have been tricky about her father. and I have read when she was growing up the (presumably white) neighbours children weren’t allowed to play with her and younger sister.

Exactly the words ‘African woman’. That’s the bit that’s a problem.

If Trump's supporters throw anti semetism at her then they'd do well to remember Trump's daughter Ivanka and SIL are practising Jews. She could easily rally that one back!

I think she should stand proud, no hand wringing about being a black woman. Go all in and lean into her strengths. She's got a good strategic position to leverage against an adjudicated sexual abuser who is a convicted felon looking to take away women's reproductive rights.

Maybe now is the time!

This is a ridiculous thing to say. can you find a single example where Trump's supporters have been anti semitic? I think everyone knows that his daughter and son in law are Jewish.

knitnerd90 · 27/07/2024 20:05

Good Lord, do you not even remember Charlottesville? There are some truly vile antisemites backing Trump. And as a Jewish woman I am here to tell you, the fact that Ivanka converted doesn't mean Trump himself can't be an antisemite. Quite frankly all the Christian nationalists Trump hangs with are antisemites.

80% of American Jews vote for the Democrats.

So do you consider the chant "Jews will not replace us" to be not antisemitic?

WildLemur · 27/07/2024 21:15

Donald Trump himself has a long history of making anti semetic statements, including calling American Jews ungrateful and disloyal.

And, of course, he is supported by various white supremacist groups.

I can only assume Valeriekat has been living under a rock for the past 10 years or so.
