To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

She isn't confirmed as the candidate yet, is she? Obama was very pointed about not mentioning her in his tweets about Biden.

I think she's all but confirmed. All the other big names you'd have thought may be in the running have endorsed her, as have most senior party figures.

I've never understood the obsession with having the first of the various different 'identity groups' in political office. If it happens because the politician is the best one trying for the job, that's wonderful, but too often they're pushed on us simply because of their race, sex, or other similar trait that shouldn't come into the question at all.

Harris isn't popular among most Americans I know, but the reasons people object to her have nothing to do with her sex, race, or the fact that her husband is Jewish (something I wasn't even aware of before reading it here, tbh). She leaves much to be desired in the matters that count.

I’m British so maybe I don’t get the Finer detail but what exactly has Trump got to offer in terms of actual policies. What are the ‘matters that count’ that he is so great at?

Polls are saying Michelle Obama could beat Trump.

I think Americans would vote for a black woman. But not Harris! And not Clinton either.

Like it or not, American presidential politics is extremely personality-driven. Harris is perceived as being odd, unintelligent and unserious. Clinton was perceived as arrogant. I would not be surprised to learn that Michelle Obama is perceived as kind yet stateswoman-like.

Clinton won the vote by three million.

Not small.

She lost the electoral college.

That is why Trump became president.

But - Amerca voted by a majority for a female president.

Why do you think that ? Trump is appalling

I think being appalling won't stop him from becoming the next President...

Pouche · 22/07/2024 20:29

Hmm I’m half Indian also. I find this stance really patronising personally. I know this offends some people. But that is how I feel. My brown (ish) skin makes you feel sorry for me? Please. I worry about the ignorant!

I’m part Indian too. Never would I ever stand for president in the US though with a Jewish husband as the US is full of racist loons.

VividQuoter · 22/07/2024 20:35

I think the same. Americans vote for the glitz, so British did, when they voted for Boris

Laura Loomer is such a disgusting excuse for a human being. YABU for reminding me that she exists.

BruFord · 22/07/2024 20:39

Trump will refuse to debate against her because he knows she’d wipe the floor with him.

@MrsSkylerWhite I said that to DH and DD earlier today, I’d really love to see them debate. She doesn’t even need to be the most skilled debater, she just needs to be a voice of sanity compared with his rants, 😂

I genuinely wish that the American system included something similar to Prime Mister’s Question Time, it’s important for leaders to be able to defend and explain their actions.

AzureAnt · 22/07/2024 20:51

She is a strong high powered professional woman. I don't think you need worry to much about her

DarkandStormyNightie · 22/07/2024 20:59

All those saying Trump will win have forgotten two things.

1- She hasn't come out swinging yet as a presidential candidate. Being a VP and being POTUS candidate are very different prospects. If she can better Biden's state of the union address and hit all the political hotspots (women's reproductive rights, global security, economy and call out her opponent as a lying convicted felon who sexually abuses women) she is going to roar into life. I think she can do it.

2-Trump has not yet been sentenced. He could very well do some jail time. When you see a 78 year old convicted felon who is currently serving time compared against a vibrant, much younger, articulate opponent, who isn't a convicted felon, the contrast is going to be very stark indeed. We haven't even got to this point yet.

We could be witnessing a turning point in history and I for one would love for Trump to sit in a jail cell thinking because of me there is now a black woman serving as President of the United States. That would be something to see.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 22/07/2024 21:20

She's raised 81 million dollars in 24 hours, I think she will be just fine.

You’re not standing for president of a racist country, are you?

Couldn’t agree more @DarkandStormyNightie. 👏🏻

YankSplaining · 22/07/2024 21:27

I’d be more worried for Americans, who might end up with Kamala Harris as president.

“She’d be better than Trump!” Okay, but that doesn’t mean she’d be a truly good president. I think this piece is a good rundown of all the issues with her as a politician.

Has she advised US citizens to inject disinfectant to ward off covid? has she taken Top Secret nuclear documents and stored them in her toilet after she left office? has she directed a baying mob to storm the Capitol Building and hang her own VP?

No, thought not. She's got some catching up to do to get into the same league of utter lunacy and chaos that is Trump.

Countrylife2002 · 22/07/2024 21:37

I honestly think this could be the last US election if Trump wins.

Harris isn’t perfect but she’s not an autocrat.

EasternStandard · 22/07/2024 21:39

No idea if she’ll win but she’s fine to run and will deal with what comes with it:

Heard Nigel Farage on LBC this morning saying he didn't think people would vote for a "black African woman"

He's such a fucking revolting specimen, worse than his NF name sakes

Edited

Er, is he not just calling out the prejudice that this very thread references, without mincing his words? It’s true, large swathes of America probably wouldn’t want to vote for her, because of sexism and racism.

Are you even reading my post? I said that being better than Trump wouldn’t make her an actually good president, and you’re replying as if I said she’d be worse than Trump, or equally bad.

Food poisoning is better than cyanide poisoning, but it would be stupid to pretend that food poisoning is good just because cyanide poisoning is worse. I hope the Democrats pick a different nominee.

That is the US system. You voting for a party or against the other party as there are only two parties.

Let’s be clear, for the swing voters, they are less likely to vote against Trump compared to those who would willingly vote for the Democrat nominee.

It’s a very real issue to get people to vote. She has her work cut out. If not enough people vote, she will lose. She needs to hit on abortion, education, childcare and women’s rights.

I think Biden sticking around for as long as he did means that it pretty much has to be Harris.

It's not ideal but we're in "making the nest of a bad situation" territory.

Anyone is better than Trump. You’d think with the size of the US population that there were more options as candidates. The rest of the world will be pleased today that one candidate is a well educated competent woman whilst the other, a criminal who behaves like a spoilt child.

Are you okay? (head tilt)

I think you need a little lie down.
