Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

Don't landfill it, but do keep it in the closet for when the grid goes down, there's no heat in the house in January, and you're freezing to death. The Apocalypse -- it's a comin' Grin

TheSandgroper · 21/07/2024 11:47

@Thehillsarealivewithbutterflies I’m in Australia and cloudless nights in winter can be icy enough if you are sitting around waiting.

Astronomy nights means twiddling your thumbs for ages while two blokes (teachers) peer at an ipad and swear at it, a peer through the lens in turn then you wait again. In the dark. In the cold.

I looked up fur coats for huddling.

I would judge you. You’re perpetuating the ‘fur is luxury and fashionable’ stance - even if it is ‘vintage’.
I wouldn’t have ivory objects for the same reason - not that I could because they are banned now old and new, in recognition of the fact that even ‘old’ ivory is wrong.

wearing it in summer? Have a day off, OP. No-one is jealous.

Thinking about the ivory thing… what about old pianos? They have ivory keys

oakleaffy · 21/07/2024 11:48

People have been ''hating'' on fur for decades.

It's nothing new.

What really put me off it was seeing a programme on mainstream UK television where animals were skinned alive- a silver fox was denuded of her pelt while still living, and her raw body was thrown to the ground.

It was one of the most revolting things I'd ever seen.

Fur farms are desperately cruel places.

Lopine · 21/07/2024 11:49

The OP wrote a goady and disingenuous post and hasn’t returned. Ignore…..

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 21/07/2024 11:50

To state the bleeding obvious. Because some poor bastard mink lived and died horrendously so you can look good, so yes people with half a conscience hate you on your fur.

tara66 · 21/07/2024 11:50

Beware the dreaded moth invasion if anyone has old fur coat stored away!

Pictureperfect9 · 21/07/2024 11:50

I wouldn't wear one because I hate the idea of wearing actual animal fur. If I had no coat & ended up in a dangerously freezing cold place with no alternative but to borrow a fur coat, I wouldn't refuse the offer. I wear leather & eat meat so it would be hypocritical of me not to accept .

TheFrendo · 21/07/2024 11:51

A photo of you wearing it out and about - or I call bull on this post.

Poolstream · 21/07/2024 11:51

If it’s vintage I don’t see a problem.
You don’t see people protesting about old pianos with real ivory keys.
It’s only 2 years since Canada Goose stopped using real fur on the hoods.

People are hypocrites and often misinformed.

Beth216 · 21/07/2024 11:52

Babadook76 · 21/07/2024 11:04

People are weirdos over fur. Loads of people wear parajumpers and Canada goose coats. All have fur trims.

Canada Goose said they were going fur free by the end of 2022 and parajumpers are made with rabbit skins that they say are a by product of the food trade.

PETA will actually take fur coats and send them to people abroad who can't afford a coat which is a much better option than chucking them away.

They’re still legal but can be hard to move across borders.
Have to be checked out.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 21/07/2024 11:52

I’ve got no problem with fur, especially given that yours is from so long ago.

RLouiseH · 21/07/2024 11:53

For me, wear what you want, whatever, don’t have an issue.
But I really don’t think people are jealous. How often do you see someone wear an item of clothing and feel jealous of it? Jealous enough to make a hurtful comment towards them? I feel that’s very unlikely. They are just against it and think it’s cruel. A lot of people have issues with others wearing real fur. But they aren’t jealous.

Yalta · 21/07/2024 11:54

I always think wearing fur makes you look so much older than you are. It’s got that great granny vibes going on. I think it always adds 15 years to someone’s age

Do you have difficulties in reading social queues if you really believe people are jealous of you owning such a coat.

One is allowed to keep an old piano with ivory keys {google} but one cannot legally sell or give or sell any ivory item, including items with ivory ''embellishments''.

Poolstream · 21/07/2024 11:54

When db worked in Kazakhstan he wore fur, it was that or die in winter.

ebadame · 21/07/2024 11:54

It's summer! You're unreasonable for wearing it in summer for a start

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/07/2024 11:54

Saltedbutter · 21/07/2024 10:59

Offended? By somebody wearing fur from a by-gone era?
Burning it doesn’t ‘undo’ anything.

It stll validates wearing fur. It''s vile.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/07/2024 11:56

It's just not aged well. What was done years ago isn't the done thing now. It's vilified.

Not cool but I guess my take would be that the animals died for it so you may as well use it

Longma · 21/07/2024 11:56

I think it’s just jealousy.

Very unlikely for most people tbh.

There is nothing that would induce me to buy or wear a fur coat.

Though tbh, in this day and age, I'd assume anyone wearing a fur coat was wearing faux fur. There are a lot of very good quality imitation ones since the popularity of fur dropped several years ago.

Oh fgs, of all the gazillion valid reasons not to wear real fur "it makes you look older" doesn't deserve head space.

But idiots like the OP validate it by wearing old fur

ruethewhirl · 21/07/2024 11:59

Yeah, that's right hun, they're all just jel. 🙄🙄🙄

Pouche · 21/07/2024 11:59

I had the opportunity to have my grandmother’s fur coat. Touching it turned my stomach. Trying to be a vegetarian (failing).
