Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

According to a 2022 article, domestic cats kill between 160 and 270 million animals and birds in the UK alone every year. As they're domesticated and virtually all of them are being regularly fed, that means that cats are killing several hundred million smaller creatures for fun every year. Pretty nasty, eh? That must be orders of magnitude higher than the number that minks kill. So you'll be advocating for people's feline pets to be made into fur coats, will you? I'm sure it'd be lovely and warm for you, and you'd have the satisfaction of knowing that nasty creatures who kill for pleasure had been slaughtered for your comfort.

FarmGirl78 · 31/01/2025 15:25

I'm not the slightest bit jealous. I think you assuming people are is more distasteful than the coat.

I agree
I could buy a fur coat if I wanted to, I don't

Naunet · 31/01/2025 15:47

I don't believe this for a second, but even if it was true, you know why, because apparently these people are telling you. What are you confused about?

Whatonearth07957 · 31/01/2025 15:50

I like cats and dogs. I wouldn't wear their fur, it's much nicer stroking it while they sit alive and well on my lap. I have no great attachment to mink, I wouldn't want one in my house scrambling around and I wouldn't buy a new fur coat made of anything, but I admit that's a bit hypocritical as I do buy new faux fur, eat meat and wear leather... Im not sure, like the OP, where the hate comes from for inherited mink coats, fake fur is so realistic these days but nowhere near as warm.

HansGrubersSuit · 31/01/2025 15:59

People do like to complain about things.

Whatonearth07957 · 31/01/2025 16:07

Mind you, I'd never entertain even owning anything from an endangered animal, lynx etc. All the posters have got me thinking, why is that? even if the clothing was old? I'd be repulsed by us destroying the animal and think the item stood for that. So I DO see where some posters are coming from. I am more likely to give up all meat (eat very little as it is) before I sympathise over my old mink coat though. I also like pigs, cows etc more than mink (opinion again!)

Thatissimplyuntrue · 31/01/2025 16:36

I inherited one. I donated it to an animal sanctuary who use them for orphaned mammals for comfort.

Boomer55 · 31/01/2025 16:59

I’m not jealous, I’ve got a vintage blue fox coat, and I couldn’t give a toss what other people think. 🤷‍♀️

But, I wouldn’t wear it in summer lol 🙄🙄🙄

Ha. I see we’re dealing with someone not in the realm of reality. Fair enough. Please don’t let anyone in real life hear you comparing the tackiness of fur to racism – it’ll be rather mortifying for you.

Not half as mortifying as the apologists for fur on here.

YABU for using the phrase 'hating on'.

Yes, agreed.

If you eat meat, you haven’t got a leg to stand on regarding fur. Especially second-hand fur.

There is no comparison but carry on wearing your hideous furs.

Both animal products, both result in death of animal, both consumed beyond necessity. What’s more to compare?

Scorchio84 · 31/01/2025 18:57

Don't wear fur... my mammy & aunties had various fur coats so I could easily say "They're inherited" but what sort of message is it saying?

Fur feels amazing slinky but have a conscience, faux fur is readily available
Do you own a pet? It's animal cruelty, like battery Hens, the terrifying (albeit short) life these animals have, how could anyone think it's work it?

AuxArmesCitoyens · 31/01/2025 18:58

Real far is more environmentally friendly than faux. I would bet more animals die from fast fashion and faux fur petrochemical and shipping pollution and climate change than do from the fur trade.

BringOnFebBankHoliday · 31/01/2025 18:58

I wonder if OP is still wearing her fur coat, after all it's a lot colder now than last July!

If we're going to go to the trouble of killing animals to eat them shouldn't we show them respect by using all of them, not by throwing away the parts we don't like?
(I don't wear fur, just think it's an interesting discussion point).

And finally, how can anyone tell if a coat is real for or not?

I didn't know this was a thing... what a beautiful way to turn something hideous into a thing of joy

We don't eat animals killed for their fur.

Fur is a result of animal cruelty. So is meat/dairy/eggs. Meat eaters getting offended by fur is really hypocritical.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/02/2025 20:35

If fur could be farmed ethically, with the animals having their needs met, then thats one thing... I still wouldn't wear fur ... but.

However fur animals generally cannot be farmed ethically, in order to keep their fur nice they have to be housed individually, in small spaces, kept very clean which usually means on a wire base so their feet suffer horrible pain - their basic needs are not met, beyond food/shelter/water, their fur is more important than their welfare.

We should be seeking the highest possible standards of welfare for all the animals we exploit for their bodies - and accept that in some cases we cannot do that, and should not.

So if you want to wear fur, go ahead - but you will have people assuming you're happy about fur farming and don't give a shit - no matter how vintage your coat is, you're not wearing a label that says 'this is vintage, I saved it from landfill', no one can know that. Deal with it, or don't wear it.

cherish123 · 01/02/2025 21:08

Hate on? Do you mean "hate" or "say hateful things"?

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/02/2025 21:11

i think they actually mean 'say things that make me feel uncomfortable, poking me in my cognitive dissonance'...

But thats pretty long and wordy, 'haters gonna hate' is far easier and makes me feel happy because I can make it their problem again.

Confrontayshunme · 01/02/2025 21:15

I'm vegan, for both animal welfare reasons and climate/eco reasons, and I've done a bit of research and wouldn't mind this. Wearing an old fur coat means the animals are long dead, probably before animal welfare became a popular topic. And polyester "cruelty-free" alternatives are so bad for the environment. Unless you could somehow find a vegan, cruelty-free, totally recycled fur coat, a vintage fur is better. My lifelong vegan friends also agree with this, but I know PETA and other groups probably don't.

i'll take it 👋

So what was it that prompted you to resurrect a thread started in July last year?

CouldItBeCake · 01/02/2025 21:48

I know right?! People are awful bores about the skinned fox I wear draped around my neck. Even though it’s vintage!! And the glass eyes are super tasteful. As you say, it’s been pretty parky the last few weeks so Freddie’s been on pretty regular duty. The barista in Skinnd nearly choked out his tongue stud this morning when he came eyeball-to-eyeball with old Fred.
